A little known anthology of Melville short stories

While known primarily for his novels "Moby Dick" and"Typee", Melville is able to demonstrate his deep philosophical insights and immense vocabulary through the medium of these wonderful short stories, including his 10 "sketches" of the Encantadas, better known today as the Galapagos Islands. Another in the collection, "Benito Cereno", is likewise highly recommended.

A collection of tales by the American master

If you had to pick a short list of the greatest American writers, Meliville would be on it. His ability to capture our attention with tales
both intriguing and of substance has rarely been equaled - perhaps only William Faulkner could challenge Melville's talent and intelligence.

Disappointing

Many readers will know Bartleby the Scriviner but fewer will be familiar with the other tales. I took up this collection to read Benito Cereno, as I was familiar with the basic facts of the real 1799 encounter between an American merchantman and a Spanish slaver off the coast of Chile on which it is based. The slaves had taken over the Spanish ship but put on an elaborate and almost successful ruse for the American captain in an attempt to convince him that nothing was amiss. A fight ensues and the Americans retake the ship. How could any writer fail to make a fascinating story out of this material? Read Melville's treatment in Benito Cereno to get an answer to this question and you may even find yourself agreeing with my assessment. Another way to indicate how this story lacks vitality is to note that the most satisfying material is the addendum which purports to be and may actually be legal documents including the statement of the Spanish captain given to the inquest before Spanish colonial authorities in Peru about the incident. Yes, I found a deposition to be more engrossing than Melville's long, enervating narrative about the American captain and his interaction with the Spanish captain. In the deposition the unbelievable details of what happened on the Spanish ship finally get some exposition. And yes, I have read Moby Dick, Typee, Omoo and Billy Budd. I am comfortable with the pace of Melville's narratives and find the subject matter in his longer works fascinating. Benito Cereno is not likely to appeal even to Melville fans and sadly it is not the only story in The Piazza Tales that is a chore to read. There are bright spots in the Encatadas, an early account of the Galapagos Islands. This just rings truer and comes off as more engaging than a story about an expat adding a patio to his house in Tuscany (The Piazza) which struck me as thin, artificial and inconsequential -- not adjectives anyone would use with any of Melville's major works. The Encantadas was the most popular of these stories when they were published and is still the most intrinsically interesting of the tales collected in this title.
