About the Author
François Rabelais was born at the end of the fifteenth century. A Franciscan monk turned Benedictine, he abandoned the cloister in 1530 and began to study medicine at Montpellier. Two years later he wrote his first work, Pantagruel, which revealed his genius as a storyteller, satirist, propagandist and creator of comic situations and characters. In 1534 he published Gargantua, a companion to Pantagruel, which contains some of his best work. It mocks old-fashioned theological education, and opposes the monastic ideal, contrasting it with a free society of noble Evangelicals. Following an outburst of repression in late 1534, Rabelais abandoned his post of doctor at the Hotel-Dieu at Lyons and despite Royal support his book Tiers Livre was condemned. His last work, and his boldest, Quart Livre was published in 1551 and he died two years later. For the last years of his life Rabelais was persecuted by both religious and civil authorities for his publications. His genius however was recognized in his own day and his influence was great.
Dr. M. A. Screech is a Senior Research Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, a Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of University College London; he long served on the committee of the Warburg Institute as Fielden Professor of French Language and Literature in London, until his election to All Souls in 1984. He is a Renaissance scholar of international renown. His books include Montaigne and Melancholy, as well as Rabelais and (on Erasmus) Ecstasy and the Praise of Folly; all are acknowledged to be classic studies in their fields.

Read This Book!

I love Francois Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel. I first read this wonderful book when I was 12 years old and I laughed and stayed up threw the night just to read it. Rabelais is for real and he relishes every moment and every conceivable fart or noise that celebrates our human existence. I read Gargantua and Pantagruel in English and I am sure the French version is just as wild, perhaps even more so! This is a wonderful author to read.

One of my favorite books

Let's face it: we can call outrageous situations "Rabelaisian" because of this book. It's outrageous and hilarious. I still have the hard copy I bought when I was in high school (class of '72, thank you very much). Now I have it on my Kindle and can turn to it wherever I am, whenever I need a laugh.

Rabelais alive and well
By Peter C Parsons
All right. This is a loooong book. Actually five books. And they werer written two hundred years ago. Original is in French, but IMO, this translation is very good. Gargantua is a gentle giant . An intellect. A warrior. And a wise King. His son Pantagruel is also huge, and watching his development during his early years is a delight. Most of the books deal with Pantagruel's doings, and with his hilarious group of pals. There is some very funny stuff going on. And if anyone thinks that Chaucer is the master of the long list or catalogue, then meet Rabelais. He can give you two or more pages of words that mean crappy lawyers, or excrement, and corrupt priests, etc etc. A lot of the latter part of the work is the quest for a prediction as to whether friend Panurge will be successful in marriage. All the various attempts at this are quite fun. I am glad to have finally encountered and read this great satire.
