Learning more about the Norman kings

As an avid reader of ancient history of Great Britian, this book does not disappoint. The author weaves a well written and detailed narrative of two middle age centuries while interpreting documented sources - surviving historical documents, monks' accounts,and other 'historians' of that time, etc. I highly recommend it for history buffs wanting to understand further the feudalism of that time and how it benefitted the powerful royal families ruling England.

It is not easy to fathom how England went from an isolated Saxon ...

This is an outstanding scholarly work, but also very readable. It is not easy to fathom how England went from an isolated Saxon kingdom to become the dominant European nation under Henry II, only to see it slip away again. Adams shows us patiently how Henry's opposition--the Church, Rome, his wife Eleanor, then his sons brought him down again, and with him, Norman England. This work is naturally complex, for it entails legal, ecclesiastical, military, feudal, and even some social and economic history. What a rich trove to explore! Magna Carta's impact is that henceforth the king will be subject to the rule of law. With John's death, England becomes its own entity, cut off from Normandy and the continent and begins a new history altogether. You cannot understand modern England without this introduction.

Conquest and More

This Book was really good for me being a Genealogist; there was heaps directly relating to my ancestors but in addition to what appealed to me was the vast resources it drew on covering the habits and movements of William Duke of Normandy and not just his family but his many barons he set up after the conquest. There were anecdotes of great interest such as 'Curthose' (shorty-pants); thought to be where the term originated. The author made good use of debating the adverse views and intentions of the King and his barons and he made a point of defining just how different the Continental Clergy was from the Clergy of England. Well done.., because I don't think it is too well understood, even in the church today, what caught Duke William's attention and made him reform the church in England
