An Exemplary Life

I first read this book in my last year as an undergrad-- and it had a profound effect on me immediately. Sarah Bradford's account of this courageous woman is revealing not only because it was written during Harriet Tubman's time (thereby showing some of the abolitionist sentiment of this period), but also because it contains Harriet Tubman's views on Harriet Tubman. Harriet's perspective of her own life is a deeply spiritual one--and the spiritual panoramic begins from her birth to old age, the common thread being her faith in God, her unshakable vision of freedom, and her consuming desire to see the freedom of others come to pass. Her courage, her incredible faith in God, her selflessness and sacrifice, her almost brutal determination, and her demonstrated love for others will bring those who read this book into a deep self-examination. "Harriet Tubman" is a transforming book that I will read over and over. I recommend this book for all ages, and for anyone doing indepth research on Tubman's roles as an Underground Railroad conductor and abolitionist, Civil War nurse, soldier,and spy. Many thanks to the publishers for making this classic available for this generation.

God Bless Mrs. Tubman

A very informative book. Prior to reading this book, I had assumed Mrs. Tubman took her people to the North, the land of "Freedom". I was wrong, Mrs. Tubman had to take her people all the way to Canada, to be free. In the North, with the passage of the fugitive slave act, Harriett Tubman knew her people would/and could be 'captured' by Northern slave catches, ( who frequently captured free African-Americans as well) and sold them back into slavery) Traveling at night, hiding in the swamps, carring laudnum to keep the crying babies from crying and giving them away, and a pistol for safety, and risking her very life should she be captured.
I regret there was never more recorded history on Harriett Tubman. Her bravery, and heroism are awe inspiring. She risked her life 19 times, to save her people, and bring them to Canada, for Canada was the end of the Undergound Railroad.
Mrs. Tubman serves as a true American Hero, that went far beyond and above, what the vast majority of us would do.
I take my hat off to you, Mrs Tubman. God Bless you.

This book is fantastic. It's the best free book I've read so far. It's a short read.

There is a distinct correlation between Tubman's childhood problems and who she eventually came to be. Had Harriot not experience the hardships she endured when she was young, she never could become the tough warrior that she did. Mentally and physically stronger than any male slave she lead to freedom, Tubman escaped detection and capture. Nobody knew who she was or what she looked like. The slave owners only knew her as "that ghost woman" who, once sighted at a distance, would cause their slaves to disappear within a few days. Knowing that the plantation owners read all slave mail before delivering it to them, Tubman used codes and secret messages to communicate her intentions. She created a series of safe houses from the south to the north to protect the escaping slaves on their journey north. When a slave had grown tired of wandering through the night wilderness, and he threatened to return to the plantation, Tubman pulled a pistol from her dress and threatened to kill him where he stood. She admitted later in life that she would have killed him to prevent him from disclosing her identity as well as her underground railroad.

I'm keeping this book in my Kindle so I can read it again and again.

As good or better than JF Cooper

I love historical fiction, but have always steered clear of Zane Grey, wrongly assuming it was "pulp fiction" stuff. Wrong, wrong...his stories are exciting, with a great combination of character development and action. As good or better than James Fennimore Cooper. The Spirit of the Border contained twists I hadn't expected which kept me off balance, in a good way, because it is not predictable. Very good and I look forward to finishing the trilogy. This is why one should buy a kindle...great books for free.

Few, if any, write better than Zane Grey,

I've enjoyed reading Zane Grey books since library days as a young boy. His writings about the western days are superb.
He has always had a special way of describing the valleys, mountains, deserts, trails, trees, forest, and lakes.
When reading one of his stories , you feel as if you were there. He is a great story teller. Leo age 80.

Live To Read

Alien books aren’t my thing, but Midnight City is definitely an exception. Right from the first page, there was action! You feel pulled in and forget everything around you. Every page was addicting, I never felt bored or skimmed. The characters were very nice to read. All three of the main characters had something to offer, and I wanted to get to know them inside and out. I felt like Mitchell really wanted us to relate to the characters, and it worked on me. These are the type of books I like. When it comes to the romance it isn’t fast, and they aren’t attracted to each other right off the bat. I’m a romance reader; so insta-love is common to me, but when reading the characters I felt like it was a nice break. There’s no sexual tension throughout the book at all; it’s a serious relationship growing like normal. Insta-love isn’t normal… as much as that bothers me (Seriously, I just want a hot guy to fall in love with me at first sight - is that too much to ask?).

The pacing, as I said, was nice and fast. It didn’t get confusing at all; it was written very well. While looking at other Goodreads’ reviews, I have to agree with some of them. The ending felt a little rushed. I had many questions left unanswered, and it bothered me to wait till the next book. I know many authors do this, but it still irritates me. Waiting isn’t my thing. But I need to suck it up and wait for the second; and when it comes out, I’ll try to be the first person to grab that ARC.

Curious to see where this goes...

I'm a little bit divided on this one. Midnight City is the tale of the young survivors of an alien invasion that has robbed the Earth of everyone over twenty or twenty one. Holt and his dog Max have been on the run for a while. We're given some hints of some dark past but never the full details of what Holt is trying to escape. Holt actually is a bounty hunter and his on the trail of Mira when an enemy ship crashes right in front of him. Holt runs inside and finds a young girl, Zoey and rescues her. Now, all four of them are on the run through a conquered world and trying to make sense of where to go and what direction is best.

Maybe it's the dark tone of the book. Maybe it's just the writing. Or maybe it's just me. But I thought this novel really dragged in spots. I've read my fair share of destroyed-worlds novels and this one just didn't flow all that well. I think part of the reason that the novel doesn't move along that well is that the author kept introducing new concepts and ideas but never really fleshes them out. Holt has a debt or some secret which is why he's trying to capture Mira but it's not discussed. He's got a tattoo that he hides but we don't know why. Mira has a former friend/boyfriend/acquaintance that we never really find out about. It's like the majority of this book is just to get you to the next one. And I'm trying to decide if there are enough hooks in this book to get me the second. Frankly, I can't decide. I'm curious to see where it goes but with so many topics left open, I think I might be tempted to see what other reviewers say of the next book before I were to pick up this one.

Promising Beginning

A fine beginning for a new SF series.

The Assembly had descended on Earth eight years before. A telepathic pulse, called the Tone, sent out took over minds of adults, causing them to march up and into the big alien ships. What they did with those humans were unknown. Immature minds were unaffected, leaving the world in the hands of children. But as they aged, the Tone began to work on them Few lasted beyond twenty.

Holt Hawkins is a bounty hunter and he's different . He's one of the Heedless, those that the Tone has no effect on. Mira Toombs id his current prey, the bounty on her from Midnight City large enough to buy him out of his troubles.

As he captures her something strange happens. Two Assembly ships, red, were attacking one of blue and white, the faction he was used to seeing. The blue and white ship is shot down, crashing near them, Holt finds a little girl, Zoey, all of eight, in the ship. She has no idea why she is in the Assembly ship, remembers nothing but her name.

The four of them, along with Holt's dog, Max, begin to wander through alien held North America, trying to avoid the warring factions, a third, green and orange, joing the fight. What the in-fighting was about has to do with Zoey it soon becomes apparent. She has some sort of powers she doesn't even understand. Mind reading it seems is one.

This was a wonderful read and I look forward to more in the Conquered Earth series.

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) is the greatest of African American intellectuals--a sociologist, historian, novelist, and activist whose astounding career spanned the nation's history from Reconstruction to the civil rights movement. Born in Massachusetts and educated at Fisk, Harvard, and the University of Berlin, Du Bois penned his epochal masterpiece, The Souls of Black Folk, in 1903. It remains his most studied and popular work; its insights into Negro life at the turn of the 20th century still ring true.

With a dash of the Victorian and Enlightenment influences that peppered his impassioned yet formal prose, the book's largely autobiographical chapters take the reader through the momentous and moody maze of Afro-American life after the Emancipation Proclamation: from poverty, the neoslavery of the sharecropper, illiteracy, miseducation, and lynching, to the heights of humanity reached by the spiritual "sorrow songs" that birthed gospel and the blues. The most memorable passages are contained in "On Booker T. Washington and Others," where Du Bois criticizes his famous contemporary's rejection of higher education and accommodationist stance toward white racism: "Mr. Washington's programme practically accepts the alleged inferiority of the Negro races," he writes, further complaining that Washington's thinking "withdraws many of the high demands of Negroes as men and American citizens." The capstone of The Souls of Black Folk, though, is Du Bois' haunting, eloquent description of the concept of the black psyche's "double consciousness," which he described as "a peculiar sensation.... One ever feels this twoness--an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder." Du Bois, Race and "The Color Line"

The Souls of Black Folks, as other reviewers have pointed out, is a masterpiece of African-American thought. But it is even more than that when we consider the context and time in which the book was written. Most of what DuBois discusses is still relevant today, and this is a tribute to the man, not only as a scholar, but as someone who was continually adapting his views in the best image and interests of black people.
Some reviewers refer to DuBois as "the Black Emerson" and, as a university instructor, I heard similar references made: 'the Black Dewey" or "the Black Park," referring to the Chicago School scholars. Du Bois was brilliant; indeed, these white men should be being called "the white Du Bois"! Du Bois literally created the scientific method of observation and qualitative research. With the junk being put out today in the name of "dissertations," simply re-read Du Bois' work on the Suppression of the African Slave Trade and his work on the Philadelphia Negro and it is clear that he needs not be compared to any white man of his time or any other: he was a renaissance man who cared about his people and, unlike too many of the scholars of day, he didn't just talk the talk or write the trite; he walked the walk and organized the unorganizable.
White racism suffered because Du Bois raised the consciousness of the black masses. But he did more than that; by renouncing his American citizenship and moving to Ghana, he proved that Pan Africanism is not just something to preach or write about (ala Molefi Asante, Tony Martin, Jeffries and other Africanists); it is a way of life, both a means and an end. Du Bois organized the first ever Pan African Congress and, in doing so, set the stage for Afrocentricity, Black Studies and the Bandung Conference which would be held in 1954 in Bandung, Indonesia. Du Bois not only affected people in this country, he was a true internationalist.
Souls of Black Folk is an important narrative that predates critical race theory. It is an important reading, which predates formal Black Studies. The book calls for elevation of black people by empowering black communities -- today's leadership is so starved for acceptance that I believe that Karenga was correct when he says that these kind of people "often doubt their own humanity."
The book should be read by all.

Powerful and Progressive - an Important Book For All to Read

This book contains essays written by W.E.B. DuBois. Some of them are very historical and recount the African American events and progess, and some of them are very personal, in which DuBois tells about his own life. I learned a lot from reading this book. For instance, I had always thought of what an awful thing slavery was- a horrible part of America's history- and that is was such a good thing that it was finally stopped. However, I never thought about the implications of life for the ex-slave after it was ended. Here were many African Americans, free, yes, but with what? Nothing. How would they get anywhere without money, education, jobs, etc.? And after freeing them leaders imposed unfair segragation and Jim Crow laws upon African Americans, so they were not really free at all.
Another thing that interested me about this book was the evolution of the slave's religion. It is very interesting to me how DuBois discusses their original religion of magic/ancestor and earth worship,etc and their gradual progression to the Christian religion of their masters, and then back to the beginning in an almost cyclical pattern. I don't think the African-American culture would be the same at all today if it were not for this mix of religious belief, although some would argue about how good it was for a religion to be forced about them and I would tend to agree.
W.E.B. DuBois was a pioneer of African American literature and thought. This book of essays will make you rethink the progress and status of African Americans throughout America's history, and will help you understand and sympathesize much more. I do agree with a previous review's critique that this book has some disturbing anti-semitic passages in it; in fact, a friend of mine wrote her paper for our 20th Century American Literature Class on that subject, so that did point that problem out to me. I find it strange that DuBois can so effectively and reasonably argue for the equality of African-Americans while so irrationably spout such anti-semitic comments. Except for this problem (which should not be overlooked), the book is very important and powerful, and it did and continues to do a lot for the advancement of African-Americans in the US.

Must read for anyone interested in American history and lit.

I can remeber reading this book in my liberal high school for our American lit class and thinking that they just stuck it in for diversity's sake--that black history and American history are separate entities. But as I began to study more history in college I began to realize that American history could not exist without black history and experience--that Dubois' insights into double identity and how racism affects both the reciever and promulgator of racism in insidious ways are crucial to understanding of how America continues to wrestle with the implications of hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow and now, more subtle racism.
I haven't read the book in 8 years, but Dubois description of the moment when a black child realizes achieves enough self awarenesss to undersstand that he is "black" and what that means to one's sense of self (at least in the 1910's south) is absolutely heartbreaking.

Law in ancient Rome.

The book is touted as a history of ancient Rome as told by one of it's most famous orators. This it is. And, much of Greek history as well. But, Cicero was also a fine counselor who knew law even as much of it stands today. His "History of Famous Orators" is in itself a remarkable works of oration that teaches an incredible amount of oration skill. The book is a great read and enlightening in many ways.

Jane Austen is one of the great masters of the English language, and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is her great masterpiece, a sharp and witty comedy of manners played out in early 19th Century English society, a world in which men held virtually all the power and women were required to negotiate mine-fields of social status, respectability, wealth, love, and sex in order to marry both to their own liking and to the advantage of their family. And such is particularly the case of the Bennetts, a family of daughters whose father's estate is entailed to a distant relative, for upon Mr. Bennett's death they will lose home, land, income, everything. But are the Bennett daughters up to playing a winning hand in this high-stakes matrimonial game without forfeiting their own personal integrity?

This battle of the sexes is largely seen through the eyes of second daughter Elizabeth, who possesses a razor-sharp wit and rich sense of humor--and who finds herself hindered by her own addlepated mother, her sister Jane's hopeless love for the wealthy Mr. Bingley, and her sister Lydia's penchant for scandal... not to mention the high-born, formidable, and outrageously proud Mr. Darcy, who seems determined to trump her every card. But the game of love proves more surprising than either Elizabeth or Mr. Darcy can imagine, and sometimes a seemingly weak hand proves a winning one when all cards are on the table.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is simply one of the funniest novels ever written, peopled with memorable characters brought vividly to life as they both succeed and fail at the game of life according to the manners of their era. It is a novel to which I return again and again, enjoying Austen's brillant talent. I have little respect for people who describe it as dull, slow, out of date, for as long as men and women live and fall in love it will never be out of style, always be meaningful, and always be funny. A masterpiece of wit and style; a timeless novel for the ages.

Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying

Just when I thought I had more editions of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE than I should ever own up to, I will freely admit to just one more. After all, what Janeite could resist this tempting package? An unabridged first edition text; Annotations by an Austen scholar; Color illustrations; Over-sized coffee table format; Extensive introduction; And, supplemental material - all pulled together in a beautifully designed interior and stunning cover. *swoon* Where are my aromatic vinegars?

This new annotated edition appeals to modern readers on many levels beyond being a pretty package of a beloved classic. Austen is renowned for her witty dialogue and finely drawn characters, but not for her elaborate physical descriptions or historical context. When PRIDE AND PREJUDICE was originally published in 1813, this brevity was accessible to her contemporary readers who assumed the inferences, but after close to two hundred years words have changed their meaning, insinuations and subtle asides have become fuzzy, and cultural differences from Regency to twenty-first century are worlds apart. Anyone can read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and follow the narrative, but it is so much more enjoyable if you can read it on an expanded level understanding it in social, cultural and historical context. Editor Patricia Meyer Spacks has not only added extensive notes on plot, characters, events, history, culture and critical analysis from a vast array of Austen and literary scholars, but added her own personal insights and observations from years of reading Austen and her experience as a college professor. From shoe roses to Fordyces Sermons to military floggings to the 19th-century meaning of condescension, readers will be informed and enlightened on every aspect related to the novel, the author and her times. In a nut shell, she has vetted great resources, gathered nuggets of knowledge and placed them at our feet.

As with all of Austen's characters, this new annotated edition of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE has its own charms, "frailties, foibles and follies." Weighing in at over three pounds, and encompassing 464 pages of unabridged text and fine print margin notes, this book easily reigns as the most all-inclusive and well-researched edition of Jane Austen's masterpiece that I have ever encountered. Considering that the elaborate annotation classifies it as a reference work in addition to a full text, it is quite puzzling that it lacks an index. In addition, the illustrations are expertly selected but sadly lost some of their refinement in the printing process, coming across dark and murky in places. However, I was pleased to see a list of further reading and illustration credits listed in the back of the book to encourage readers to "add something more substantial, in the improvement of [their] minds by extensive reading."

Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: AN ANNOTATED EDITION is a monumental achievement that should be on the top of your holiday wish list and considered one of few editions available to be esteemed truly accomplished.

Check the Publisher carefully before you place your order because....

One of the versions listed is published by "General Books LLC." Another reader complained about the tiny and almost unreadable font - you probably bought the version published by General Books LLC - and here's the reason.

General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Publishing, (google them and take a look at the Wikipedia article on them) and they specialise in publishing books that are free of copyright without doing any editing or quality control. A few quotes from the publishers website will explain more:

"We created your book using OCR software that includes an automated spell check. Our OCR software is 99 percent accurate if the book is in good condition. However, with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos....

After we re-typeset and designed your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work. Therefore, we usually remove them. Since many of our books only sell a couple of copies, manually creating a new index and table of contents could add more than a hundred dollars to the cover price....

Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. We would really like to manually scan and add the illustrations. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies....

We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. We would really like to manually scan each page and buy multiple copies of each original. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies..... "

So what you're getting if you buy the version published by General Books LLC is a scanned in, unedited, low quality (and with an almost unreadable font from the sounds of it) unindexed / No table of contents book at a higher price than many of the good quality imprints available. Basically, VDM Publishing is flooding Amazon with these low quality prints (450,000 of them are listed now) and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with better quality imprints associated with them. The product description is insufficient for the buyer that's not aware of this publisher.

Totally unethical marketing.

A reader,Scott Hannigan has commented: "What you have given us is feedback - not a review. There is an appropriate forum for your complaints. You should delete it as it brings down the average score of a classic." In response, I have to say that Amazon does not provide a forum for complaints and has been remarkably resistant to taking on board criticism from many customers over the books published by General Books LLC. In addition, Amazon is the Printer of these POD books and makes a substantial cut from them. Sadly, given that the General Books LLC version is lumped in with other imprints from genuine publishers, there is no real way of making potential buyers aware of the problems with this particular version of the book without inflicting it on all the other versions available. C'est la vie.

Scott - apologies for replying like this but Amazon removed my ability to comment some time ago - I broke ze commenting guidelines. Re "Amazon does provide a feedback section. You will find it under 'My Account', 'Personalization', 'Leave Seller Feedback'" - yes, they do indeed but the response to myself and many others has been uniformly that it's not their problem. Look up the discussion forum on Alphascript Books for a very enlightening backgrounder on this one. That said, if you bought a book from General Books LLC and saw what it was like, you'd be highly annoyed - as most buyers have been - and even if you returned it to Amazon for a refund, you'd be out of pocket for the postage.
