Historical insight, but better condensed

The book is written in the flowery and descriptive style of its generation with a strong British imperialistic perspective. It is also too long for modern ears and needs to be condensed. As a picture of the Spain of that time, however, it is valuable and is certainly worth reading, at least in part.

It's a fun red.

Don't let the title fool you! The book is a picaresque travel account of low life in 1840s Spain that says little about religion and a lot about human nature. It's a fun red.

Borrow roving and looking and passing out Bibles

Spain, the most backward and the most colorful part of Atlantic/Mediterranean Europe, brings out special emanations from an author. In the early Seventies we got Michener's "Iberia". In the mid 1800's we got George Borrow's "The Bible in Spain".
Borrow was an Englishman who'd become a religious fanatic, of the raving Protestant stamp. He was hell-bent on distributing the Castilian Bible in Spain; at that time it was still a radical action and perceived as such by various authorities.
But Spain, at least since the Carlist times, has a certain tolerance for hard-core fanatics, as those for whom Quixote is a fond memory would like to believe. Borrow got away with his Bible-thumping, again and again, as he travelled through Iberia (he actually started in Portugal, that perennial gateway for Englishmen); the Spaniards were not as ferocious as black-cloth Calvinisticoids might enjoy believing, and, what is more, Borrow himself was much inclined to love the Spaniards; his lust for religious heat was tempered with an innate good fellowship, and readers meet many lovable Spaniards. The book will make you believe in Liberty, Fraternity & Equality, though the world makes you know better.
I doubt I would have picked this book up if I hadn't heard that Borrow was folklorist Vance Randolph's favorite author. They're not much alike, outwardly. Their styles are different, though both of course write well. But deep down, there's a kind of instinctive interest in their fellow human beings, somehow a rare thing.
Borrow wrote at length about the Gypsies, not an odd thing for someone who loved Spain, and could manage to continue to love it. Also novels, though I haven't read those.
