It will make you want to hug the woods!

John Muir, the most passionate naturalist in print. Without his
writing and political activism back in the l800's we'd not have
the Sierra Club, Yosemite National Park, etc. etc.
Our nation owes this wonderful man a great deal of gratitude.
He writes like an angel. I am reading several of his books. Check also
into one of the greatest dog stories I've ever read: Stickeen.
Also read: The Mountains of California. Read everything he wrote.
He is poetic, he is a brilliant botantist, he is profoundly spiritual.
Read his boyhood biography. He memorized the whole New Testament by the
time he was 13...word for word!
His Dad was always beating him so he retreated to the wilderness
and watched the birds, learned the latin names of the flowers, and
hiked the mountains with a hard roll, no jacket, and no sleeping bag....
Someone should make a movie about him.
Read any of his books and become a John Muir fan.
I camped in Yosemite many times in my 20's and discovered his writings
then. Its a joy to read them again and be as thrilled 40 years later!

Don't buy the Kindle

Muir wrote in a time when long flowing narrative was the style and he is great at it. His language is very discreptive. Unfortunately, unless you are famaliar with the places or plants or animals he is describing, it still hard to visualize what he is talking about--pictures or drawings would help. The hardback version has the pictures, but the Kindle version has nothing--nada. So if you want to read Muir, get the hard back or better yet, go see the places he saw, take pictures and update the book, which I am considering doing myself.

Steep Trails by John Muir

This book by John Muir details many of his adventures as a back country hiker and explorer. Each is well written of course. John lived an amazing life in the backwoods of the West. Yosemite is a favorite haunt for him as we know. But the other stories covering parts of Oregon, Washington, and glacier country brought out insights not known to me before.
I found the book fascinating and reflective of some of my way long ago, and not anything as involved, backpacking expeditions. Nothing quite like a high mountain meadow in spring with a riot of color in bloom, a sky so crystal it almost seems it could crack, and air so pure your lungs pulse with joy with each breath.
Get the book. Now.
