A Preview of the Holocaust

This is a review of CRESCENT AND IRON CROSS by Edward Frederic Benson. Mine is the Kindle edition which is a reformatted version of the original book published in 1918.

The author was a prolific author and popular in his time. He died in 1940 and was the author of a large number of fictional works and short stories. He also wrote a dozen non-fiction works including CRESCENT AND IRON CROSS which was published at the end of World War I.

Benson writes well, but his style reflects the affectations of Victorian authors. Younger readers might find it a bit of a slog.

It's worth it, though. Benson describes some of the worst parts of the Armenian genocide carried out by the Turks. The Armenians were a Christian minority within the Ottoman Empire and millions of them were murdered by the Muslim Turks once World War I got underway.

Turkey was an ally of Imperial Germany and Benson sprinkles his graphic descriptions of mass murder with phrases blaming the "Prussian molochs" for inciting the Turks to destroy their Chrisian minority. Coming at the end of a world war which the British and their allies blamed on Germany, this is understandable. Later works do not depict this very real campaign of genocide as being a consequence of German meddling. In fact, some of the best eye-witness accounts of it come from German observers.

Throughout all the torture and mass murder, there is an eerie resemblance to the early phases of Hitler's Holocaust against the Jews, especially the operations of the SS Einsatzgruppen in Poland. "Who alive still speaks of the Armenians?" Hitler reportedly asked.

The author does and his book is one of the first to do so. I gave it four stars for its pioneering effort. I took one off because I'm descended from Prussians myself.

If you're interested in World War I, the Middle East, Turkey, Armenia or mass murder, you'll find this to be a useful reference book. Benson pulls no punches in describing what happened.

Historically interesting as I did not know much about the subject.
I am not sure when this book was first published, I assumed some time after the first world war.
It is hard to believe that human beings can be so cruel. But I guess history is full of events like this, even in todays news.

A fine collection of humorous short pieces.

"Love Conquers All," by Robert Benchley, is a collection of 63 short humor that appeared in magazines prior to 1922. We have a handful of funny reviews of books that are probably no longer available (but you don't need to know about the book to laugh at the review) such as "Measure Your Mind," or "Those Dangerously Dynamic British Girls." There are a few parodies of opera plots, always a hard thing to do since opera plots are so fundamentally absurd anyway, but Benchley manages it nicely.

There are also a few pieces on how to watch various sports; "How to Watch a Chess Match," "Watching Baseball," and "The Score in the Stands" are all a trifle dated but still amuse. Students who go home for Christmas will understand "Home for the Holidays," even though it is quite out of date too; the humor endures even though many of the references are out of date (dress-studs?).

All in all, a wonderful book even though some of the humor is a little hard to get to.

Finally. A writer who really is timeless.

Timeless is a word that is used a lot these days. It seems that everything is a "timeless" novel/ film/ car/ beauty. And in most cases- um, not so much. Even classic pulp science fiction, of which I'm a huge fan, can be distractingly dated. So I was delighted to come across this book of Robert Benchley's writing and find it just as amusing and relevant today as it was almost 100 years ago.

Benchley was a Harvard educated critic and humor writer from the first half of the twentieth century. He is best known for his columns in Vanity Fair, Life and New Yorker magazines and as a member of the Algonquin Roundtable along with Dorothy Parker, James Thurber and other famous wits of their day. He also had a career as an actor in comedies from the 1930s and if you are a fan of those old black and whites you have probably seen him even if you didn't realize who he was.

"Love Conquers All" is a collection of columns from his early career, the book originally published in 1922. I stumbled across this free kindle version when I looking for a contemporary of Ring Lardner (just to compare styles). The only negative thing I have to say about this kindle version is that there is one small problem in an otherwise extremely well formatted book- the original book page numbers weren't deleted and show up randomly throughout the text. I didn't have a problem overlooking that.

For the past few days I have been reading different selections whenever I had a spare moment. And laughing- a lot. Most people feel some trepidation when looking at books this old, flashing back to struggling through "classic" novels in school. But Benchley's writing still feels fresh and accessible. Yes, his columns and reviews reflect the times but are very relatable today. Truly an example of "some things never change."

Student struggling through those dreary southern writers in American Lit? You will really enjoy "Family Life in America". Have kids in college? Check out "Home for the Holidays". Wife driving you crazy over some magazine article she read about "togetherness"? You will REALLY appreciate "Happy The Home Where Books Are Found". Experienced the misery of being an "entertained" houseguest? Benchley's article on a weekend with H.G. Wells will resonate. And I think anyone who has struggled through some over the top romance novel, will giggle through Benchley's review of Florence L. Barclay's "Return Empty".

As I read the book, I was constantly looking for someone to read quotes to. Since Amazon disapproves of excessive quoting, I'll just include one here. From "A Weekend with Wells""

"This, of course, is silly, as any of Mr. Wells critics will tell you. It is the effect he has on irresponsible, visionary minds. But if all the irresponsible, visionary minds in the world become sufficiently belligerent through a continued reading of Mr. Wells, or even of the New Testament, who knows but what they may become just practical enough to take a hand at running things? They couldn't do much worse than the responsible, practical minds have done, could they?"

There are over sixty gems in this book. Oddly enough, one of the best isn't funny at all. In his review of W.E.B. Du Bois' book "Darkwater", Benchley comes down firmly and scathingly on the side of civil rights. In 1922. Good on you, Mr. Benchley!

When I occasionally review a book, I rate it based on how I feel about it within its sub-genre. So while I might love a "cozy" mystery, I'm not likely to recommend it to a hard core sci-fi dude. So would I recommend "Love Conquers All" to fans of early twentieth century New York writers? Absolutely. But I also recommend it to the silicon valley IT guy who makes sure to watch the Daily Show every night. Because Benchley really is "timeless".

Paul Creswick (1866-1947) is the author of numerous children's books, most notably "Robin Hood and His Adventures". His other works include "In AElfred's Days", "Under the Black Raven", "Hasting the Pirate", and "The Smugglers of Barnard's Head".

Fun, but problematic

My five-year old and I love the Wyeth illustrations and the stories which surround them. She is a big Robin Hood fan and we're always trying out 'new versions' (her words) of the classic tales. This is one of the winners, for accessible prose, short chapters and, of course, the beautiful paintings.

And yet ... this version has an incredibly surprising and annoying error of historical fact which bothers me to no end (hence the rating). In the preface, Creswick sets up the plot: it's 1190, and Prince Richard, waiting for his dad to die, goes off on crusade. The competition between John and RIchard is thus presented as 'which one will succeed to their father, King Henry II'? All well and good (and my daughter doesn't care), except that it's totally bogus history. Henry II died in 1187 and Richard had been king for several years before setting off on crusade. John's crime was (perhaps, although not proven historically) in seeking to overthrow a crowned king (not to compete with a brother for the succession). Some may consider this gripe to be small beer (and indeed, as I've said, my daughter doesn't care - although I always read 'king' for 'prince' RIchard when I read it), but it drives me crazy. Why mess around with fact? Either Creswick was too lazy to get it right, or decided that the past wasn't exciting enough and would thus improve on it. Either way it is pretty annoying. [Note: I am no fanatic for historical accuracy, and I am well aware that the Robin Hood stories as we know them are mostly fictional anyway - it's just that there is no good reason to depart from the historical record here]

NOT the complete Paul Creswick Robin Hood!

This purchase was intended for my five year-old nephew for Christmas. While this edition does contain the NC Wyeth color plates, the book itself is "based on" Creswick's and is definitely not the Robin Hood I remember checking out (over and over) from the local library when I was a kid. Admittedly, this edition, more of an over-sized children's story book, is probably more age appropriate for my nephew. I'm still going to give him the book, but I'm saving it for his birthday. Still looking for the REAL Creswick Robin Hood!

Includes the novel NANA

This is a new, 2012 Kindle public domain freebie edition of this title. Though the previous edition was pretty good, the earlier semi-active TOC is now truly active and direct, and the formatting has been improved; this ebook is just about perfect. The title, however, is misleading since at least one of these so-called short stories ("Nana") is considered a novel. In fact, it is the 9th novel in Zola's famous 20-volume "Rougon-Macquart Cycle," and in it, heredity and a squalid environment threaten to doom the title character to a life of prostitution. The complete contents of this collection are: "Nana," "The Miller's Daughter," "Captain Burle," and "The Death of Olivier Becaille." A great collection by a famous French author and totally free, this is truly wonderful.

Emile Zola had too much time on his hands when he was writing

Emile was a fantastic writer but he could not help but give detailed descriptions of every piece of clothing, furniture, home, each piece of environment surrounding the characters in the story and of course the cultural standing of each character. I prefer getting to the point of the narrative. I found the first story interminable in these matters and gave up after reading about four chapters - plus the fact that he had all the males in the story enamored by sex and lust. I enjoyed the last story about the character who was in a coma and buried alive but somehow managed to escape the coffin after it was buried. The Third story was alright but suffered from too much trivia. I suppose anyone today who wants to be a good novelist would profit from learning how Zola masterfully handles descriptions and the thoughts of his characters.

Impossible to Read

I love Emile Zola, but this edition is terrible! This book is more of a textbook: the font is tiny, extra long pages, I got a headache just trying to get through the first few pages. Unfortunately, there are not many choices out there for French classics in English. I'm returning this book. A shame.

A great example of a bad Kindle book...even for free.

Let me start by saying "My bad!" if you came here from my review of the Kindle 2: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation).

When I bought my Kindle I was excited to instantly download two free books to start playing with it and I mentioned these in my review. I never opened this one...until now.

Mea culpa.

This is a great example of a bad Kindle book! Like all the free books, it has no linked Table of Contents. But the worst part is that Marco Polo is an incredibly complex tale filled with footnotes, editor's comments, endnotes and foreign languages accumulated over the last 600 years. That makes it impossible to enjoy (and comprehend) in the Kindle format.

I wanted to see this version because I'm now reading an incredibly good new print edition The Travels of Marco Polo: Edited by Peter Harris (Everyman's Library (Cloth)) and wanted to compare.

No comparison. Buy the print edition. You'll love it!

Wow you 1-star raters are nuts

The book is fine. The little nav bar on your kindle tells you where the text starts (location 4498 of 13872, for those too stupid or lazy to figure it out) and all the various prologues and prefaces before that point are just the older books were made, people. Calm down, this ebook is fine and contains a good translation of the original books.

I'd have given this ebook 4/5 stars but upped it by one to offset the bs ratings it's been getting by some very lazy pablum fed readers.

This book is a mess

When I looked at the previous and only one star review, I thought, man, it *can't* be this bad. Well, it is.

I can handle no table of contents or internal formatting, but this book truly is a disaster. The first 10% of the book is a mess of confusing forewards and notes about Henry Yule and his family. You can't really make out when this book begins and is just a disaster. I got 20% of the way in before I gave up and deleted the book off my Kindle, so I can try to find a properly formatted version, whatever the cost.

Still, I want to read about Marco Polo's travels in my Kindle, and will have to look elsewhere. It's a shame - such a great story needs better than a bad ebook.

Burroughs' Best Martian Tale

Conventional wisdom has it that the first three books of Burroughs' Martian series, "A Princess of Mars," "The Gods of Mars," and "The Warlord of Mars" form an excellent trilogy and all the rest of the Martian tales are quite poorly done in comparison. I disagree.
I will cite two examples as to why "Chessmen" is Burroughs' best work in this series.
[1] You can hardly conceive of a more ghastly creature than a spider-being who lives as a parasite on headless human bodies, but that is a perfect description of Ghek the Kaldane, one of the central figures of the book. Burroughs takes this repulsive monstrosity and makes him such a loveable character that you cannot help but like him.
[2] Burroughs not only wrote a good yarn, he wrapped his tale around a striking boardgame that he had invented--jetan, or Martian chess.
It's no real trick to invent a chess variant. There are thousands of them, and most of them are rubbish. What is so singular about jetan is that it is a good chess variant. I read "Chessmen" as a child, and after reading it, the first thing I had to do was make a jetan set and play the game. I whiled away several enjoyable hours with the game. John Gollon, a noted authority on chess variants, had a similar experience when he was writing "Chess Variations." He thought he'd include a chapter on jetan for some comic relief, so he made a jetan set and played a few games. He found jetan "quite good--very playable and interesting." He then pronounced jetan "not a mere novelty, but ... a respectable game."
These two singular achievments (Ghek & jetan) are not the only details that make "Chessmen" so enjoyable. Gahan of Gathol (aka Turan the Panthan) makes for a satisfying hero, and Tara of Helium fills the bill quite nicely for a damsel in distress.
The heros are noble, the villians are wicked, the cause is just, and the action is nonstop. Great escapist reading.

WORTH NOT FORGETTING

Burroughs' Martian Series is worth remembering and rereading from time to time. I first read these books well over 50 years ago and they, and this book, have lost none of their charm. For the student of SiFi and S&S, these are a must read. Granted, the style is certainly different than todays books, but this is a plus. We need to read and remember it. That being said, these books are just simply fun to read. Recommend them highly.

The Original and Authentic Magical Adventure

The Chessmen of Mars is, I think, the pinnacle of Burroughs career, and certainly the best of the Barsoom series. It's also one of the great science fiction romances of the Twentieth Century. As a boy, reading the typical John Campbell-influenced SF of the 1950s, nothing prepared me for finding this book (and about 30 other moldy Burroughs hardcovers) in my grandmother's attic. There's not an alienated child in the world who could read this book and not be struck deeply by the pathos and courage of Ghek the Kaldane, whose the real hero of the tale, rather than Gahan of Gathol, the golden boy who gets the girl.

Alexander Pope (21 May 1688 – 30 May 1744) was an 18th-century English poet, best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer's Iliad (ISBN 9781480048348) and Odyssey (ISBN 9781490516424). Famous for his use of the heroic couplet, he is the third-most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, after Shakespeare and Tennyson.

Pope had been fascinated by Homer since childhood. In 1713, he announced his plans to publish a translation of the Iliad. The work would be available by subscription, with one volume appearing every year over the course of six years. Pope was 25 years old. He secured a revolutionary deal with the publisher Bernard Lintot, which brought him two hundred guineas (£210) a volume, equivalent to about £26,000 as of 2012, a vast sum at the time.

Encouraged by the success of the Iliad, Pope translated the Odyssey. The translation appeared in 1726, but this time, confronted with the arduousness of the task, he enlisted the help of William Broome and Elijah Fenton. Pope attempted to conceal the extent of the collaboration (he himself translated only twelve books, Broome eight and Fenton four), but the secret leaked out. It did some damage to Pope's reputation for a time, but not to his profits.

By the mid-18th century new fashions in poetry emerged. A decade after Pope's death, Joseph Warton claimed that Pope's style of poetry was not the most excellent form of the art. The Romantic movement that rose to prominence in early 19th-century England was more ambivalent towards his work. Though Lord Byron identified Pope as one of his chief influences (believing his scathing satire of contemporary English literature English Bards and Scotch Reviewers to be a continuance of Pope's tradition), William Wordsworth found Pope's style fundamentally too decadent a representation of the human condition.

In the 20th century Pope's reputation was revived. Pope's work was found to be full of references to the people and places of his time, and these aided people's understanding of the past. The postwar period stressed the power of Pope's poetry, recognising that Pope's immersion in Christian and Biblical culture lent depth to his poetry. Maynard Mack thought highly of Pope's poetry, arguing that Pope's moral vision demanded as much respect as his technical excellence. In the years 1953–1967 the production of the definitive Twickenham edition of Pope's poems was published in ten volumes.

Not my favorite translation

Pope translates it in verse, which is fine. I like my Robert Fitzgerald translation into verse a lot. What I like least about Pope's translation is that all the Greek people and Greek gods are given Roman-equivalent names. Thus, Odysseus is rendered "Ulysses," Athena is called "Minerva," Poseidon goes by "Neptune," etc.

In any event, Pope's entire translation is available as a free e-book (do a google search), so you can read the whole thing online before deciding whether this is the translation that you want to buy in book form.

This translations takes the excitement out of the poem.

First let me say that works by writers such as Homer and Shakespeare are hard to read when they are not translated into modern English. It can be hard not to get lost in the wording since it's generally not natural to us. The density of the text didn't contribute to the rating since with texts like these, you should know what you are getting into. I have read The Odyssey multiple times, but from different sources. I LOVE it and all things mythologically Greek. I feel that information is important to explain my rating. I'm not rating the story, but the translation and format in which it was presented.
First there is a long, pretentious preamble that jumps from philosophical explanations, to a biography of Homer, to an analysis of different translations. It's a rough read. Second, this translation converts the original Greek to Roman counter parts. Odysseus is called Ulysses, Athena is called Minerva, etc. I feel like that destroys the very basis of the story. Imagine opening a book titled Romeo and Juliet and from page 1 the characters are called Tony and Jennifer. There's no other way to put it, it's just wrong! This can also cause difficulties when discussing the book with others or if it's being read for a class. Third, this translation groups the verse lines into paragraphs. This will also cause issues if you are reading for a class because you cannot cite verse lines. I received this e-book for free in exchange for my honest opinion, but I'll be deleting it in favor of a better translation.

The rest of the story about what happened to the Greeks...

Having started in on Pope's translation of the Odyssey immediately upon finishing his translation of the Iliad, I am finding myself thinking in iambic pentameter. Use of the rhymed, strictly metered couplets certainly lends power and majesty to this translation, but the 18th century conventions make it somewhat less compelling for me than the Fagles translation, which also uses metre for power, but avoids rhyme and rings truer to the 21st century ear. Still, this story is a compelling one and Homer, through these translators, tells it powerfully. His sense of where to begin the narrative and how to move it along is unerring. While still a majestic work of art after more than 3000 years, I find the Odyssey lags slightly behind the Iliad in excellence, perhaps because it is so much more narrowly focused on one individual whose character is pretty static throughout. The Iliad's heroes, some of whom we meet briefly as shades in the Odyssey, on the other hand, transform as the story unfolds. I find both books left me in the end with a sense of the futility, even foolishness, of war and provided much food for thoughts about how the telling of the stories achieved that.
