About the Author
Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

Fun!

This is so much fun! Lang called it a "shilling dreadful" (as opposed to a penny dreadful). Lang has fun with his plots and is pretty good at writing them--they have all the interconnectedness of Dickens--but Lang doesn't quite have the skill to make the story seem feasible (the reader can normally swallow Dickens's coincidences). Lang has trouble linking paragraphs together or delving into motives in order to keep the work from melodrama. Nonetheless, if you've read anything by Lang or if you like Victorian literature, this is definitely worth a read. All of Lang's pet projects appear here--the book is full of classical, literary, and folkloric allusions--the learnedness seems a little out of keeping with the sensational plot, but if you like Lang at all, you will enjoy it and be glad of it. His portrayal of women seems more true-to-life than the caricatures of them in his journalism--though all of his characters are fairly sensational. I also really loved the portrayal of Oxford and the hero who went there just at the end of the aesthetic movement and therefore can't help but blend a little aestheticism into his half-hearted attempt to humanize himself by helping members of the working classes in the slums. And who wouldn't want to read a plot that hinges on tattooing?
