About the Author
Captain William F. Drannan (1832-1913) was born on the Ocean during his parent's voyage from France to America. They settled in Tennessee. At the age of 4 he was orphaned by a cholera epidemic. He was then raised by a man named Drake. At age 15 he set out on his own and into an adventurous life. In 1847 he was taken under the wing of Kit Carson and became an Indian scout among many other things. He was accused of mixing fact and fiction in his books. He wrote two books about his life: Thirty-One Years on the Plains and in the Mountains; or, The Last Voice From the Plains (1903) and Chief of Scouts (1910).

Excellant True Adventure

This is the true story of a boy who was orphaned at a young age and given to a farmer who treated him very poorly. In his early teens, he runs away and happens to meet Kit Carson, who takes him under his wing and treats him like an adopted son. (As he leaves, the revenge he takes on the housekeeper who had been so cruel to him is one of the highlights of the book.) He has many amazing adventures as a hunter, trapper, army and wagon train scout, indian fighter and so on. He barely escapes certain death on many occasions, rescues women captured by indians, etc. The book covers most of his life and shows his gradual development from an ignorant boy to a skilled and highly regarded frontiersman whose advice and assistance are sought by Army officers and others who have to brave the dangers of the "wild west." I've read the book twice and will no doubt read it again. Considering his scarcity of formal education, he writes quite well and with humorous understatement when describing experiences that would have most of us soiling our clothes. A real "guy's" book.

I ordered this book on a whim because one,it was free.and two it looked interesting.This has been one of the best books I have read in a long time.
The book is very well written and the characters seem to jump off the page and into your imagination.They don't write them like this anymore.Great book!

I've quite enjoyed this book. I'd only known of Kit Carson by name previous to reading this. It's an interesting historical account of the hard lives that trappers and frontiersmen lived. A good read for anyone that likes survival stories or historical accounts.
