A great collection of Kipling's stories from India
By T. Simons
This collection was first published in 1890, and is a collection of the stories in a few previous volumes -- the book that first made him famous, _Plain Tales from the Hills_, and other books of stories set in India. It isn't a *complete* collection, though, and several gems from those volumes (most notably the story _Lispeth_, which might be Kipling's single best short story) are absent.

The stories that are in here are good reading, though, and show Kipling at his ambiguous best -- at the same time the man who was considered to be Poet Laureate of the British Empire, and the man who declined it. There are a number of good stories in here, but I'd say start with Plain Tales from the Hillsbefore this, if only so you don't miss "Lispeth."

Stories included:

"The Finest Story in the World"
With the Main Guard
Wee Willie Winkie
The Rout of the White Hussars
AT Twenty-Two
The Courting of Dinah Shadd
The Story of Muhammad Din
In Flood Time
My Own True Ghost Story'
The Big Drunk Draf'
By Word of Mouth
The Drums of the Fore and Aft
The Sending of Dana Da
On the City Wall
The Broken-Link Handicap
On Greenhow Hill

The Man Who Would Be King
The Gate of the Hundred Sorrows
The Incarnation of Krishna Mulvaney
His Majesty the King
The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes
In the House of Suddhoo
Black Jack
The Taking of Lungtungpen
The Phantom Rickshaw
On the Strength of a Likeness
Private Learoyd's Story

Ideal introduction for those who have never 'Kippled'
By Robert Guttman
Question: "Do you like Kipling?"

Answer: "I don;t know, I've never 'Kippled'."

For those who have never 'Kippled" and would like to try, this particular volume provides a perfect place to start. Rudyard Kipling wrote in a wide variety of literary genres, including short stories, novels and poetry, some of which was intended for children, and some of which was intended for adult readers. However, this volume of 26 short stories, set in Victorian India, can perhaps be said to represent the quintessential Kipling. This is by no means a complete collection of the author's short stories, having been culled from a number of volumes of stories that the author published. However, they do represent some of Kipling's very best. There are a number of stories of Kipling's famous "Soldiers Three", as well as some selections from other well-known works, such as "Plain Tales from the Hills". Included are such perennial Kipling favorites as "The Man Who Would Be King", the source of the equally-memorable motion picture of the same name.

These days Kipling occupies a somewhat awkward position in the pantheon of British literature, being regarded as too modern to be considered "classic", and too old-fashioned to be truly "modern". Apart from that, all that jingoistic stuff about The British Empire and "Inja" makes modern British readers feel ill at ease. It is somewhat analogous to the attitude towards Mark Twain in the United States, where "Huckleberry Finn" was actually considered for exclusion from public school libraries due to the book's repeated use of "the 'N' word". Nevertheless, both Twain and Kipling were consummate story-tellers. In the end, both were guilty of nothing more than crating characters who were real, and who spoke the way they really would have spoken.

As for this particular Kindle edition, I must add that this is one of the best examples I have struck so far as presentation and formatting is concerned. Would that they were all as good!

Kipling always good.
By vivienne edwards
Reading Kipling is always good. Even though I like some of his other works better than this one, I still enjoyed this one very much. He takes you into the heart of India as it was in his time. Excellent use of the English language which is always a joy for me. The stories are mostly short and complete which makes it a good book for a brief reading session.
