Hardy's forgotten masterpiece

Desperate Remedies was Hardy's first novel and arguably his best. The fact that it is relatively unknown could be due to the fact that it has never been serialised or filmed, which is a great pity. The story with typical hardy twists and turns is a real mystery and grips the reader from start to finish. A MASTERPIECE OF A MYSTERY

Until last week, Thomas Hardy's work had somehow escaped my reading, but after this gem, I'll try to make up for lost time. I found "Desperate Remedies," apparently his first published book, to be a page-turner. Hardy has woven an intricate mystery featuring fascinating and sympathetic characters. The morality and the sense of propriety of the time he wrote (mid-1800s) were of far higher standards than today's thorough lack thereof; the typical modern reader might thus have a hard time adapting. It's a real pity because this is one entertaining book.
Setting aside its wonderful plot, in my opinion the book satisfies the criteria for timeless literature. T. Hardy not only has a penchant for the turn of phrase, but straight-up, on-the-money insight into the human psyche. I recommend to the avid reader a day or two off to enjoy "Desperate Remedies."
By the way: Apparently Hardy considered his work potboilers (writing that panders to the masses). There is one Little-Nell Tied to Railroad Tracks scene; nevertheless, I disagree.

Great story

Complex story, but easy to read. Language of the rural people seems real. The ending keeps it from being a sad story. Hardy can take a few words and create a view of a person or a place that cannot be rivaled. Fortunately the online dictionary is available to define his words (usually). I cannot help but believe people had better ability with language at that time than people do now.
