`Without motivation you'll never go the distance.'

Author, fitness expert, trainer J.M. Parker spent twelve years as an Army veteran who trained soldiers to remain in compliance with Army height and weight standards in order to help them keep their careers. She not only understands and can communicate physical training on all levels but she also is a nutritional expert - and both of these talents she displays in this fine little book about how to train and prepare for 5K, 10K and that envious achievement, the major 26.2 mile Marathon.
Parker wisely preps her readers with all of the aspects of preparation for running the marathon (no matter the length) with excellent information on diet preparation, the importance of hydration and electrolyte replenishment, the type of running gear (from shoes all the way up to clothes), the various forms of posturing for running, the difference between anaerobic fitness and aerobic fitness both in running form and in physical fitness preparation, core training, exercises to strengthen the legs, the injuries that can result from running (and when to consult medical guidance), and then a master plan day by day that outlines the correct preparation for success.
Throughout the book Parker is a non nonsense advisor, a firm coach, but at the same time makes even the work sound rewarding as she encourages her readers to concentrate on that finish line. An indispensible book for serious runners - or wannabe beginner runners! Grady Harp, January 14

A Marathon just may be next

Since the weather has turned off nice I have been trying a new form of exercise, running. However, I've had trouble staying focused and staying on target. After reading this book I realize a lot of my problem was understanding the need for a proper diet and how to stay hydrated, and the breathing techniques was another area I never gave thought to. I just thought you ran.
I would just "eat" then later run, always ending in discouragement because of my endurance. I understand now why diet, proper hydration and breathing is so important. The book even provides a one week meal plan to get you started on the right path.
There is so much information in this book, whether you are looking to run competitively, or just to get yourself in shape, all the answers can be found in this book that will make you a success in your running efforts.
I've only used the techniques in this book a couple days now but have to say already my mind and body is enjoying the running more than it ever did before.I am believing I too could run in a Marathon and contemplating boosting up my overall goals. I love this book and the way the author puts believe in your efforts.
As you read through this book it becomes apparent very quickly the author does know what they are talking about. If you're looking for a "complete" book on running you won't be disappointed.

Ready to Run? Read This Book First!

I am a woman, not exactly young or in peak condition, and I just ran my first 1/2 marathon a few weeks back. I would have loved to have had this book while I was training. I very much underestimated how difficult it would be, even though I had read and applied everything I could find on the subject for the year leading up to it. The author writes: "the physical part of running is only a small portion of how far you can go." This is so true!
Although the focus of this book is on running a marathon, it is equally as valuable to anyone who is training to run the half marathon or even a 5K or 10K. The author goes over in great detail diet, including menus and what to eat when eating out and are in training -- so helpful! Also covered is how to keep hydrated, proper running form, how to choose the best running shoes and gear, strength training, mental training and so much more!
I finished my first half marathon. Barely. I know I would have done so much better if I had had this book while training. I definitely plan to use it while training for my next one.
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars! Highly Recommend!
