First published in 1914, Edgar Rice Burroughs's romance has lost little of its force over the years--as film revivals and TV series well attest. Tarzan of the Apes is very much a product of its age: replete with bloodthirsty natives and a bulky, swooning American Negress, and haunted by what zoo specialists now call charismatic megafauna (great beasts snarling, roaring, and stalking, most of whom would be out of place in a real African jungle). Burroughs countervails such incorrectness, however, with some rather unattractive representations of white civilization--mutinous, murderous sailors, effete aristos, self-involved academics, and hard-hearted cowards. At Tarzan's heart rightly lies the resourceful and hunky title character, a man increasingly torn between the civil and the savage, for whom cutlery will never be less than a nightmare.
The passages in which the nut-brown boy teaches himself to read and write are masterly and among the book's improbable, imaginative best. How tempting it is to adopt the ten-year-old's term for letters--"little bugs"! And the older Tarzan's realization that civilized "men were indeed more foolish and more cruel than the beasts of the jungle," while not exactly a new notion, is nonetheless potent. The first in Burroughs's serial is most enjoyable in its resounding oddities of word and thought, including the unforgettable "When Tarzan killed he more often smiled than scowled; and smiles are the foundation of beauty."

Tarzan, the original "real" action hero

Edgar Rice Burroughs started writing adventure novels nearly 90 years ago. The most famous of his characters is, or course, Tarzan. And this book is the one that got the Tarzan legacy started.
In this book you meet Tarzan, learn who he really is, where he came from, how he became lord of the apes and protector of the jungle, and the English Earl of Greystoke. You also learn the story behind the story about Tarzan and Jane.
I've been a Tarzan fan for nearly 20 years. I've been collecting Tarzan books (older ones) for the past 15 years. I've read nearly all the books in the series, and this one is probably the best. I'll be the first to admit that if you read a lot of Tarzan books back to back you will see a somewhat formulaic approach to some of the installments. This first book, however, is original, interesting, and immensely entertaining.
I encourage you to read the book that got it all started in 1914 -- the premis, the character, and the mystique that spawned numerous films, and other spin-off media, and a series of books that spanned publication dates from 1914 well into the 1940s.
Move over Indiana Jones and James Bond -- Tarzan is the real McCoy. He's strong, brave, modest, wise, and good. He's got the attributes that we could sure use in a hero today!
Give this book a look. You'll be glad you did. It's a book that you could enjoy reading to your children.
5 stars for story, character development, readability, and content. Is it a literary classic? Yes, in that it holds its own respected place among fictional literature. Will it ever will literary acclaim? I don't think that Joyce or Faulkner need to worry.
But, hey, it's a fun read! Give it a try.

I'm shocked by how much I liked this book

I'm shocked by how much I liked this book; it's hilarious! Something you should know before reading: it's super racist and sexist. Typically this would annoy me, but somehow it comes off as funny in this book, not that racism or sexism is funny, but the writer seems so unaware of the world in general, that some of his more ridiculous depictions come off as just the flawed thinking of a individual with very limited experience.
An example of Mr. Burroughs limited experience with the things he writes about would be his general description of the animals in Africa. First off, he talks frequently of "sabor" the LION in the African JUNGLE. Secondly, Tarzan is raised by apes, which by their description, is like no animal found yet in the annals of the earth. These apes are NOT gorillas, as is often depicted, Burroughs makes it clear that Gorillas and apes are not the same thing, and yet his apes are bigger than a man (well over six feet) which makes me believe they can't be chimps, oh, and they swing from tree vines, quite a feat for such a huge simian! If this weren't enough, these apes are capable of incredibly human ceremonial behavior, even to the point of having drums. On top of all of this, we have Tarzan, who through heredity, his genetically superiority coming from his ancestors unbroken line of British aristocracy, is capable of great gentility despite being raised by apes (for instance, he knows that he should kiss Jane's hand upon meeting her, and all because of genetics!). Oh, and did I mention that no one in the book can put two and two together? It nearly killed me how long it took everyone to figure out that Tarzan was the son of the two dead people in the cabin.I mean goodness, Jane even comments on the fact that he looks exactly like the photo of his deceased father, and still can't surmise that they're related.
Despite all of this, I really liked this book. While it may be outdated and written by a man who didn't quite know his subject, it doesn't take itself too seriously, which in turn allows the reader to not take the mistakes too seriously. This novel was not only funny on accident, but it had a kind of pleasant humor to it throughout what with Jane's senile father, the just......odd lady servant, and Tarzan's frequent condescending thoughts as he wonders why humans are always so stupid. I think it's great that the frankly silly romance between Jane and Tarzan is written like a cheesy harlequin. I've never read a book by a man in which the romance was so very....frilly.
in the end, it is what it is, and if you can ignore the glaring stereotypes and take it as it is, you'll enjoy it like I did.

A back to nature classic

Edgar Rice Burroughs never considered himself to be a great author . He wrote in a concise primitive style which was ideal for Tarzan of the Apes. The story is full of flaws but so are those by more acclaimed writers of fiction. It makes a good read and that is what counts. The people criticising the novel are to a large extent imposing their contemporary urban prejudices on a work which was written over a century ago. Edgar Rice Burroughs was confronting the difficulties faced by the noble savage who is raised in a natural environment which would have been common to all humans thousands of years ago, and the artificiality of today's urban civilisations. The few tribes left living in a natural environment such as the Amazon jungle are now faced with extinction because of the destructive money making schemes of our so-called superior way of living. Burroughs defended the American Indian against exploitation years before this was fashionable. Of course the story is impossible but so are the westerns and soap operas that many people today take for reality. The reader should realise that the blacks who are condemned are the ones who kill Tarzan's foster mother Kala. In later stories Tarzan has an equal relationship with black tribes such as the Waziri warriors. More often than not it is the shifty white men who are the enemy. Although there is lots of violence in Burroughs' stories it is not the gratuitous violence common in many of today's films. Today we have torture, lust, drugs, and foul language rampant in the film industry. None of this is characteristic of Burroughs.The main weakness of the book lies in Tarzan knowing how his name would be spelt. We have to assume that there was something in Tarzan's primer which enabled him to know what his name was in English even if he could not pronounce it.
