Delicious yet again!

I continue to enjoy McDonald‘s writings even more if possible. How he shines the light on inmost wanderings is delightful and revealing. I am unaware of searching my own heart so much as when I am reading him except when reading God‘s Word. Thank you.

A REVIEW OF THE BOOK -- Not this Lesson Plan

This is a review of the book "The Clan of the Cave Bear," NOT THIS LESSON PLAN. I believe this is a valid place to post this review because no "Lesson Plan" should be sold completely separate from opinions about the book being "taught."

The Clan of the Cave Bear sounded okay from the cover and information I had access to at the time. Within the first chapter or so I noticed that my right eyebrow was raised--thinking "riiiiiiiight," (aka medium strength disbelief). I was willing to overlook the gaping holes in logic and in the story for the sake of adventure.

However, soon after being taken in by the Cro-Magnon clan, the main character Ayla had some unhappy surprises. (I thought of her as Ayla/Barbie because the author went on and on about her blond hair, trim figure, and refined bone structure and that she stood with such good posture...stuff like that.)

Ayla/Barbie was not happy with the people that captured her. They were grubbing in the dirt--so unlike her clan that lived in a beautiful green valley, they didn't understand the concept of bathing (or at least not bathing often enough), she didn't understand their speech, and the women looked a bit unfriendly while the men looked too friendly. Soon after that, Ayla was raped in detail so graphic that I consider it to be "verbal pornography."

Returning the book didn't completely resolve the problem. I am a very strong person, but I felt like I had been assaulted somehow. By the author. I had done my due diligence and was reading along, then pow! Rape is traumatic enough, but the author assaulted me and others by using words and details making it graphic. Books like this should carry a warning.

I'm amazed that so many people don't consider verbal pornography to be offensive and/or worth mention, but I'm not surprised. Sadly, most people are taught by family or society to skip over things they don't want to see, or they don't think it is bad.

Authors and publishers have let down the reading (and audio book) public by failing to put a warning on books (back covers) and promos so people can buy books as informed consumers! And Amazon will receive my suggestions for how they can help us rate books.

We also need a way to help people choose a "safe" book as a gift! (FYI: I have included a personal experience regarding this subject in the following paragraph.)

My sweet parents came home one day and there had been a book signing at a bookstore. The author seemed like a nice girl so they bought a copy and gave it to me as a gift. Less than three pages into the book, there was such a stream of swearing that it seemed the author had a quota to fill. I had planned to quietly return the book, but my parents were excited to know if I liked it. I will never forget the look on their faces! They were disappointed, and frustrated that they didn't know about the content, but most of all they were embarrassed and ashamed right to the core for giving me a book that exposed me to such offensive language. They are very good people, and it took me months to smooth things over.

I think that responsible reviewers who find offensive content (language included), in a book should warn others...as a matter of courtesy. It has nothing to do with being "prudish." It has everything to do with being considerate! AND as a bonus, forewarning may result in fewer 1-star ratings!

Narrative of the Life...

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass should be required reading in all high schools. This book was so eloquently written that it is easy to forget that the man who wrote it taught himself how to read and write! He is expressive and poetic, yet concise. He takes the reader on a journey through horror and hope. I learned things about slave-life that I could have never imagined.

The introduction by, Angela Davis, was just as compelling as the narrative. Her story is not one that I will soon forget. I could not help but to compare Davis and Douglass as I read and I was again amazed at the command Douglass had over the English language. For all of Davis' education, Douglass was her equal. I will definitely be reading all I can from both, in the future.

A Moving History

This is the first book I read expressly about slavery. It is impressive in how well it was written, especially for a man who was born and raised with so little early education. His story is compelling not only because it is true, but because it is told in a personal way, richly detailed and sensitive to Douglass' desire to help the public see the people and places in his early life through his eyes and his heart, through one born and raised in slavery.

As a result, his story allowed me to envision how it might feel to be raised and held helplessly captive by savage, vicious, lawless, utterly dehumanizing labor, anger and violence. It also demonstrated how easily the slavery relationship could transform otherwise decent people into monsters. My most horrific realization was that probably most of us could become as brutal as the masters described in this book if we were brainwashed to adopt the mental construct of the time, that holding a slave is merely a legal contract, that it involves a high price paid for a important labor source, an acceptable way to operate one's businesses.

Ironically, slaveholders become largely dependent on their slaves for the status, wealth and security of themselves and their families. Once a society allows the ownership of other human beings to play so important a role in their livelihood, without any moral or legal restraint, it's no wonder these plantation owners became so blind and brutal in forcing every slave's compliance to their slightest whim. With the constant threat of non-compliance and escape casting a shadow over the livelihood of one's family, I now understand how those fears could develop into a complete disregard for the lives and conditions of their enslaved workers. The peer pressure both spoken and unspoken from family members, neighbors and business partners created slave masters who would not dare be foolish enough to show a moment of compassion. How fearful these owners must have been of the slightest sign of impertinence, envisioning how it might lead to a labor revolt within their community, and of reprisals as violent and terrible as the attacks they themselves inflicted on their slaves.

No matter what race or nationality is in the position of master or slave, the institution of slavery had to be abolished not only due to the horrors perpetrated on the powerless, but because of how the combination of utter power and dependency encourages such limitless depravity in our human nature.

Don't get this edition...

This is a great story, and one I think every American should read. HOWEVER, this particular edition does not include the Preface written by William Lloyd Garrison, who recognized Douglass's eloquence and power as an orator and enlisted him to speak for the abolitionist movement. Garrison's preface is a valuable part of the story, so I suggest you look for a different publication which includes it.

About the Author
Kevin Baker was born in August 1958, in Englewood, New Jersey, and grew up in Rockport, Massachusetts, a small town on the North Shore. He graduated from Columbia University in New York City in 1980, and since then has earned his living as a writer and editor.

His first novel, Sometimes You See It Coming, based loosely on the life of Ty Cobb, but set in the modern day, was published in hardcover by Crown in 1993 and in paperback by HarperPaperbacks in the spring of 2003. Dreamland, part of Baker’s New York‚ City of Fire trilogy was published by HarperCollins in 1999, and in paperback the following year. Paradise Alley was published by HarperCollins in 2002, and the third and final volume of the trilogy, Strivers Row, which was published in February, 2006. Kevin was the chief historical researcher on Harold Evans’ best–selling history, The American Century,published by Knopf in 1999. He wrote the monthly “In the News” column for American Heritage magazine from 1998-2007, and has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, The Frankfurter Rundschau, Harper’s magazine, Talk, and The Industry Standard, among other publications.

Chronological Survey of American History with Many Visuals; For Adults, Teens or Read-Aloud by Parents to Younger Kids

This is the companion book to a documentary mini-series AMERICA THE STORY OF US that aired on A&E's History Channel in the spring of 2010.

This book is written to an adult audience and is fine for teens or even upper middle school students. For kids it would serve best as a read-aloud for family study for any family.

The book is loaded with visuals ranging from drawn illustrations to historical photographs or facsimilies of historical documents, and maps. Each two page spread has at least one whole page of graphics and some are comprised of two thirds images to text ratio.

The book moves at a good pace and never gets boring. The time period covered goes from the arrival of the colonial settlers to 2010 including the election of President Barack Obama, who also penned the introduction. The content does not candy coat history either; hard topics such as the treatment of Native Americans, slavery, and poverty in the early 1900s is covered.

This book is now a part of my family's library about American history and we are using it in our homeschool studies.

I love the chronological arrangement of historical events and all the visuals and the interesting text, therefore this book has earned a rating of 5 stars = I Love It.

Feel lied to...

The concept of the ebook is great except that the description specifically said it has audio and video and is for the Kindle. I have tried it on my Kindle Fire and 3G and both times I am told my device does not support the video or audio. Am I missing something here?

Unfortunately, yet again Amazon fails to let their product have the content first. I love my Kindle Fire, but the video only works on apple products. Come on Amazon, get it together.

despite Toynbee's best scholarly instincts

Toynbee was deservedly one of the most prominent historians of the early twentieth century, and one of the reasons for that was his lively, vivid, and engaging writing. This book demonstrates that strength amply. However, its interest and utility is lessened by time and context: while most readers will most likely be looking for a history of Turkey, this book is more an extended political pamphlet. As such, it suffers from the assumption (no longer valid) that references to then-current events need not be explained.

Moreover, the time of writing is somewhat unfortunate--this volume dates from 1917. The First World War was grinding along, and Turkey and England were at war--a circumstance that colors the narrative, despite Toynbee's best scholarly instincts. Worse, the outcome of that war and its sequel drastically altered everything connected with Turkey, rendering this book rather dated. It becomes, in a sense, 'mere prelude.'

In a way, that becomes almost a virtue, in that Toynbee's pamphlet vividly illustrates for the reader how different modern Turkey is from the Ottoman empire which was, so to speak, its 'root stock.' Read from that perspective, its brevity--a drawback for the reader looking for a full picture of Turkish history, who will be disappointed by this volume--becomes a virtue, and "Turkey: a Past and a Future" becomes a startling illustration of a nation on the verge of transformative change.

Three stars, But you have to be Brave

I chose this book off of Amazon.com when I first began to study Turkey, and my reason for choosing it was... I could download it to my Kindle for Free. While my efforts to exactly identify when it was written have failed (the Amazon hard copy says it was published in 2010), I suspect it was in the early 1950s. The book is very dated, written in a heavy academic style that presupposes a whole body of historical and regional knowledge I don't have, and it is sometimes surprisingly, I might even go so far as to say shockingly, politically incorrect. I would have given up reading it, but it was also very SHORT, and I found I was getting through it so quickly, that what I was able to gain was worth it.

Here's a hint at what you're in for via the very first two sentences of the book: "What is Turkey? It is a name which explains nothing, for no formula can embrace the variety of the countries marked "Ottoman" on the map: the High Yemen, with its monsoons and tropical cultivation; the tilted rim of the Hedjaz, one desert in a desert zone that stretches from the Sahara to Mongolia; the Mesopotamian rivers, breaking the desert with a strip of green; the pine-covered mountain terraces of Kurdistan, which gird in Mesopotamia as the hills of the North West Frontier of India gird the Plains; the Armenian highlands, bleak as the Pamirs, which feed Mesopotamia with their snows and send it the soil they cannot keep themselves; the Anatolian peninsula--an offshoot of Central Europe with its rocks and fine timber and mountain streams, but nursing a steppe in its heart more intractable than the...." oops. The page ended... but the sentence goes on. What are "the Pamirs" anyway?

A shockingly politically incorrect disparagement of the Turkish people came through loud and clear in a section about the Armenian persecutions. The book quotes a German teacher who taught in Aleppo and who resigned in protest in 1915. "The Young Turk is afraid of the Christian nationalities--Armenians, Syrians and Greeks--on account of their cultural and economic superiority... they must therefore be exterminated or converted to Islam by force. The Turks do not suspect that in so doing they are sawing off the branch on which they are sitting themselves.... The Turks, the least gifted of the races living in Turkey, are themselves only a minority of the population, and are still far behind the Arabs in culture....We teachers, who have been teaching Greeks, Armenians, Arabs, Turks, and Jews in German schools in Turkey for years, can only pass judgment that of all our pupils the pure Turks are the most unwilling and the least talented."

Whoa there. Imagine finding anything like that in a book written in the last twenty years! I wonder what said German teacher would say about that passage if he could be consulted today? As someone unfamiliar with Turkey and the Turks, I'm afraid I need to approach such dated opinions with caution. How interesting to read them in this dusty book!

A "German authority" is cited to back up some of these opinions: "The extermination of the Armenian population means not only the loss of from 10 to 25 per cent of the total population of Anatolia, but what is more serious, the elimination of those elements in the population which are most highly developed economically and have the greatest capacity for civilisation...." As one with only a passing knowledge of the horrible history of this part of the world, this book provided interesting insights, but I feel like I have to be cautious, given the extremely racist opinions, in adopting too much without balancing with other input.

The book did shed valuable light on the relationship between Turkey and Germany, which I vaguely knew existed and which I now understand better (though as the quote above demonstrates, I'll need to bring some other sources to bear before feeling confident about what I've learned). The author writes: "Germany's control over Turkey depends upon the maintenance of a corrupt minority in power--too weak and corrupt to remain in it without Germany's guarantee, and corrupt enough, when secured in it, to put it at Germany's disposal." He quotes a Dr. Rohrbach: "We have set beore ourselves the necessary and legiimate aim of spreading and enrooting German influence in Turkey, not only by military missions and the construciton of railways, but also by the establishment of intellectual relations, by the work of German Kultur--in a word, by moral conquests; and we are determined, by pacific means, to reach an amicable understanding with the Turks and the other nations in the Turkish Empire. So I give the book three stars. Hard to read. Maybe I'm just not smart enough. Might be worth revisiting when I've read other, more accessible histories of Turkey.

There have been millions of books written about Lincoln, but I really enjoyed this one because it had quotes and stories from people who actually knew Abe. It follows his history and includes all kinds of characters who actually dealt directly with Abe throughout his life. If I were a history teacher I would require this as class material.

If you like history you will love this book.

Intimate interviews with the people who knew Lincoln.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, originally written approximately 20 years after the death of A. Lincoln and revised in 1913. There were wonderful stories into the person of Lincoln from people who knew him and described beautifully his character, incredible intelligence, charm and devotion to his country.

helps me a appreciate a great man even more. great anecdotes about a down-to-earth, very caring man. even funny at times. carefully weighed decisions and stayed true to his nature. great book for demonstrating how a politician can rightfully carry out his duties and not try being liked by everyone, but still be respected.

Not "The Physician"

Harry Hopeman is the main character of "Jerusalem Diamond". Like in other Gordon books, he is a jew. An american jew, very wise, rich, he trades diamonds. His past, or the past of his family is glorious, but even so, it is also misty. In the plot, Hopeman travels to Israel, the jewish nation, to verify the autenticity and, if possible, to buy a historical diamond that arises the interests of the three major religions: christianism, judaism and islamism. Arriving at Jerusalem, Hopeman sees himself pressed by people representing the three religions, that view possession of the diamond as a way to get better over the other two. Hopeman's religious culture is put against his journey in the Land, where people breathe religion mixed with armed fighting; and he gets involved in a love affair with a local woman, widow to an ideal. Despite all these things, he finds a perfect diamond... when what he was looking for was one with a very visible damage. Jerusalem is a precious city to three cultures. And in this city Hopeman finds a diamond... HIS diamond. The plot in the book is very interesting, but the only problem with Noah Gordon's books is that they get pale if compared to his masterpiece, "The physician". In "Jerusalem diamond", the historical chapters seem a little bit undeveloped, and the main plot twists so much that sometimes the reader gets lost. Anyway, a fast book to read, and very pleasant. One won't regret the purchase.

It was pleasant reading, but no-where near the standard of The Physician or The Shaman. I sometimes question the obligatory love/sex inclusion, when none appears to be warranted, especially in this novel.

Noah Gordon is in a class by himself. I have read several of his books and have never found one that was not intellectually stimulating, intricately plotted and totally great. This man's obvious love of research and his attention to detail make his books a memorable reading experience. The Jerusalem Diamond explores the world of high end diamond exchanges and the diamond cutters who enhance the stones' beauty. In addition to reading a great story, the reader gets to learn more about diamonds than he ever thought to know.

William Scott-Elliot (sometimes incorrectly spelled Scott-Elliott) (1849-1919) was a theosophist who elaborated Helena Blavatsky's concept of root races in several publications, most notably The Story of Atlantis (1896) and The Lost Lemuria (1904), later combined in 1925 into a single volume called The Story of Atlantis and the Lost Lemuria.

Very Interesting

The author writes this book w/a lot of facts based on verifiable data. It really gives you an in depth look at the history of life on this planet. A history you won't find in any public schools! I am not sure how much is really true, but it sure makes you think about how everything has evolved. . . I am really disappointed that the map links don't work on the Kindle. They are referred to a lot in the book and I could not see them.

historical data from a lost era?

I'm not sure if this book is fiction or non-fiction, but it reads as if the author knew what he was talking about. I find the book very interesting and found myself reading most of it in one sitting. I give the book 4 stars because the MAP links on the Kindle edition don't work. They speak a lot about maps and have links in the book but I can't see them when clicked on! Hope this is fixed soon.

light book,easy to read and mark the pace,this book bring account from older tales,mythological and written script that describe a place that seems to be very similar or maybe the same lemuria and atlantis that we get familiar with those name on this age
