AYER

The records of Essex county, Massachusetts, have this name under

many forms, such as: Aars, Aers, Aier, Aiere, Aiers, Air, Aires, Ares, Ayeres, Aver. Eayer, Eayre, Eyer, Eyers, Eyre.

(I) The ancestors of most of the name in New England, and the earHest in Essex county was John Ayer. It is supposed that he came from England, and was living in Salisbury, Massachusetts, in 1640, removed to Ipswich in 1646. next year to Haverhill, and died there March 31, 1657. His wife Hannah died October 8, 1688. Children: John, Rebecca, Robert, Thomas, Peter, JMary, Obadiah, Nathaniel and Hannah. The eldest received the homestead by will.

(II) Cornet Peter, fourth son of John and Hannah Ayer, was born about 1633, perhaps in England, and was a freeman in Haverhill in May, i666. He was a farmer, member of general court 1683-85-89-90, and active in town aiifairs and in the Indian wars. He married, November i, 1659, Hannah, born June, 1642, in Salisbury, daughter of William and Hannah (Goodale) Allen. She died December 22, 1729. He died in Boston in January, 1689. Children, born in Haverhill: Ruth, Hannah, Abigail, Mary, Martha, Samuel, William, Rachel, Ebenezer.

(III) Captain Samuel, eldest son of Cornet Peter and Hannah (Allen) Ayer, was born September 28, 1669, in Haverhill. He was a man of property, and owned a negro slave named Lot. He succeeded his father as member of committee for control of common lands of Haverhill. His efficient leadership in the Indian v.-ars did much to prevent savage outrages. He died January 2, 1744. He married, November 21, 1693. Elizabeth Tuttle, of Ipswich, who died November 29, 1752. Children: Hannah, Peter, Samuel, William, Ebenezer, Elizabeth, Simon and Sarah.

(IV) Lieutenant Ebenezer, fourth son of Captain Samuel and Elizabeth (Tuttle) Ayer, was born in Haverhill, February 18, 1705, and settled in Methuen, Massachusetts. Upon the establishment of the province line in 1741 his homestead became a part of Salem. New Hampshire, and the following ...

Surprising but true; TASER is an acronym for Tom A. Swift's Electric Rifle and here is the novel where the famous electric rifle is showcased. This is actually not the first appearance of the famous electric rifle, that would be in Tom Swift in the Caves of Ice but in this book the rifle takes center stage.

In the previous book Tom Swift's father's life was saved after a heart operation and I was worried that they would simply ignore it in subsequent novels but to the authors credit he acknowledges it and states that the elder swift will henceforth need to slow down. The reason I care is because the Tom Swift novels can sometimes be a bit sacchariny and it's nice to see Tom living in the real world with real world problems.

This particular book was published in 1911 and certainly times have changed. Tom Swift is written as a near perfect hero so it's shocking when he makes plans to test his electric rifle on elephants in Africa. In fact his father encourages him to bring back an, "airship load of elephant tusks" The gun makes no sound and no visible firing but can destroy objects at a distance. It is, in fact, quite dissimilar from an actual TASER. The electric gun is a horrifying weapon capable of dissolving a full sized whale, ‘like a lump of sugar in a hot cup of tea’. Tom just starts blasting sharks for target practice which seems unusually cruel for the boy hero. He disintegrates African buffalo and blasts two 25 foot pythons. In fact he just goes on a killing rampage killing elephant after elephant, more buffalos, lions, hippos and birds. After a time I was like, ‘For God’s sake Tom, your gun works. Stop the slaughter’ Sure, the author always gave a reason for most killings but it became increasingly absurd that he would find himself in so many life threatening situations. Lord only knows how many elephants he killed by the end of the book but there were at least three separate groups of elephants they killed, maybe four.

I’m fully aware that whenever I read a book from the 1800’s up to the early to mid 1900’s that there are certain tropes that are often inescapable and it’s always painful when a character travels to Africa because they ALWAYS employ the same tropes. Whether it be Tarzan or Mickey Mouse or whatever they always come across black savages who are generally violent, aggressive cannibals and often pygmies. It’s not even the blatant racism, it’s the entirely uncreative racism. This book is a product of its times and is easily the most cringe worthy I have yet to read in the series. The ‘savages’ attack them after they crash and they begin to mow down wave after wave. The blacks attack with the reckless abandon of animals and this assault happen TWICE by two different groups. It was not lost on me that their vehicle, called Black Hawk, crashed and the occupants killed dozens if not hundreds and the blacks attacked for no apparent reason as if it were just their savage nature. Unlike Black Hawk Down none of the occupants died. There is never any sign of remorse or sadness at killing all these human beings.

If there is one bright spot in the book it’s that the rivalry between Tom and Andy Foger appears to be over forever. Foger is a detestable character and I’m glad we won’t have to see him warring with Tom Swift anymore. I assume next book we will be out of Africa. Thank Goodness.

Dated but Fun Read - An Interesting Look at What Kids Read in 1911.

I love the Tom Swift Books. Yes, they are dated, but they are full of good hearted fun and the idea that with a faith and gumption, you can accomplish anything - a common virtue the age worked hard to instill in young people. It was an age of invention and forward thinking, and it reflected in the books for young people. They just had to do right and never give up, and everything worked out well. Now maybe that doesn't work out in reality all the time, but I was raised on books like this, and I think it was a good thing.

Now this book is totally politically incorrect in every way, from killing African animals to racial mentions. I actually thought this was a good thing with my children, as it brought up the topics for conversation in productive ways in my family. I would much rather bring these things up than brush them under a rug and pretend people never talked like this or have different views of these things.

One of the most interesting things about this book many people do not know is that this is where they get the word TASER from. Tom A. Swifts Electric Rifle. So this little book has put its mark on modern history.

Let's Go on a Lion Hunt

John Clute (1993) states that in the edisonade (a breathless adventure featuring the inventor-as-hero), inventions usually tend to be transportation or communication devices rather than weapons. But there are exceptions to this rule. Victor Appleton's _Tom Swift and his Electric Rifle_ (1911) is one such case. Of course, Tom does invent a new airplane in this thriller as well. But his main invention is most certainly a weapon.

The _Electric Rifle_ is the tenth Tom Swift novel and was written by Howard R. Garis, of _Uncle Wiggily_ fame. Garis wrote the first thirty-five Tom Swift adventures. (Harriet Stratemeyer Adams wrote the last three.) Garis was also the author of the first six titles in the Great Marvel series, another Stratemeyer syndicate project. For my money, the Great Marvel stories were better written and more imaginative than the Tom Swift tales. But they were never as popular. Tom Swift became the archtypical edisonade hero.

Sam Moskowitz (1976) once pointed out that the speech patterns of Mr. Damon in the Tom Swift stories resembled that of Uncle Wiggily. Garis's style of writing was stilted, even for his day. But what Garis lacked in literary polish, he made up for in speed of production. The first five Tom Swift books were published in 1910. The second five were published in 1911. And the next five were published in 1912. After that, his production slowed down a bit. But he frequently wrote more than one adventure a year.

Tom uses his invention-- a rifle that fires bolts of electricity-- to go big game hunting. Now, I will confess at the outset that I am not a hunter. I can think of few things in life that I would hate more than going on a hunting trip. I cannot watch a hunting and fishing show longer than 20 seconds. Listening to hunters recount their exploits sets my teeth on edge. So the scenes in which Tom reduces a whale, several sharks, and a water buffalo to bloody pulps did not exactly stir my blood with a sense of excitement. Nor did the scenes in which he kills a pair of pythons, several antelope (for supper), a pile of elephants (for their ivory tusks), rhinoceri, and lions. Hippos are spared because they are not considered "good sport".

I am not naive enough to assume that everybody shares my values. And certainly these hunting scenes would not have been considered at all remarkable back in 1911. There is a kind of innocent optimism about this novel-- a belief that mankind can persevere, do better, make the world a better place. We are a bit more sophisticated today. I sometimes wonder if we are the better off for it. But we cannot really go back, you know.

I would like to close with a technological note. Some sixty years later, Jack Cover invented the taser, an electronic weapon marketed by Taser International. "Taser" is an acronym for _Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle_. Few readers today remember the original novel. But it was not without some cultural impact.

a view from the ground (around 1900)

Hudson was such a wonderful pastoral writer (although his novel 'A Crystal Age' pushes well passed the pastoral), full of sensitive observations of nature - geography, buildings (yes, they are part of nature too), people (usually humble people) and especially birds. His childhood took place in Argentina but he always had a yearning for England. He did write about that other world too. At the start of 'Afoot in England' it appears he was undertaking his walks - free of guide books quite deliberately - with his wife. But she disappears midway through this book, is not refered too - not even obliquely - any more and I wonder what sort of tragedy might have marked his life at the time of writing. But whatever might have happened it didn't impair his ability to continue observing and reporting in a down-to-earth way (in comparison to, say, the somewhat aloof short stories of Rabindranath Tagore).

Charming, even where it has its lengths

"Afoot in England" by W. H. Hudson (the initials standing for William Henry) is certainly NOT a guide book - something the author explicitly wants the reader to understand from the first page on.

Originally written in 1909, Mr. Hudson describes walks, buildings, people, villages, paths, trees, animals - most of all birds - he saw, observed or met during the early 1900s.
There is mention of places we can actually see for ourselves, such as Calleva (now Silchester), which at the time of the author's visits was just beginning to attract public interest and a lonely place free of tourists, or Stonehenge, where he spends some very cold, dark hours along with several hundred men wanting to observe the sunrise, only to go back at a later date to repeat the experience on his own, which he then finds very rewarding.
Some rivers and villages are named, but by no means all of them, and so it would be quite a difficult undertaking if anyone wished to walk on Hudson's traces.

At one point, he despairs of the weather - "has there ever been a June as cold and wet as that of 1906?" - something that made me think of what I have been hearing from my relatives and friends in England as well as reading on some of the blogs I follow.

Everything he writes about is neatly wrapped up into a chapter; some chapters talk about a particular place (such as Salisbury Cathedral) or a particular person (such as an elderly lady who told him the story of his life over the weeks he stayed at her cottage), while there is another chapter entirely dedicated to Robert Bloomfield's novel-length poem "The Famer's Boy", with many quotations.

As an ornithologist, the author knows and writes a great deal about the birds he observes during his walks, but this is never boring. The book does have its lengths (for instance, the aforementioned chapter about "The Famer's Boy"), but it is entertaining, interesting and not without humour. If nothing else, it shows how more than a 100 years ago, people dealt with early forms of tourism, from the mass to the individual kind.
Some of the words the author uses are naturally different to how a writer would express similar ideas now, but that only adds to the charm of this book.

From the variety of topics Mr. Hudson covers in the 25 chapters, I guess he'd be a well-read blogger if he lived today.

English countryside in early 1900's

The language is beautiful as Hudson journeys forth to villages and hamlets. Quaint peek into the past of landscapes,vegetation, animals and people. A whimsical read of how things used to be, but not a practical guide for visitors today.

It was really good, i think the mane resion why i got this is because i love bunnies. It is kind of use lots of old timey words. I can't tell any more then i would have spoiled the book.

Short Stories

A book of short stories about animals living in the woods. Some are from the perspective of the Rabbit or Fox, others are from the perspective of the Hunter. The narrative in the happy parts is inviting and fun to read, viewing the simple life of a rabbit or grouse in a meadow. The initial story covers the life of a wolf and its territory focusing on killing of livestock in the late 1800s. This results in hunting the wolf and the end result isn't pretty. The life cycle of animals from birth to death is a theme. The initial story can be read to get a glimpse of wolf hunting in the United States. It is written at the 6th to 8th grade level. The use of vernacular can be antiquated or archaic. The book was listed on the 1908 Minnesota 7th and 8th Grade Reading List.

Great additional research tool

If you're interested in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, you NEED Cottn Mather's take on witchcraft in general and this book explains it. If you can get past the Old English spellings, you'll come away with an understanding of how even an educated person for his time (such as Mather) would believe in witches being in league with the "Devil".

If you want to learn more about religious thought and ideas during Colonial times, give this one a shot. It's a bit of a labor for the modern reader to work through some books written during this time, but once you get started they flow pretty well.

And interesting, if biased account of the Salem Witch Trials.

Warning: The archaic language does make it a challenging read. The title is merely a taste.

H. P. Lovecraft includes this book in the villain's library of 'forbidden books' in "The Dunwich Horror" and several of his other stories. As this was a well-known text at the time of his writing, Lovecraft included it along with his fictitious books, like 'The Necronomicon' and the 'Book of Eibon'. This blending of real and fictional texts imparted legitimacy to the fictional texts as his readers would go, "I've heard of that one and that one and that one. I don't recognize that one. I should look it up."

Also, Lovecraft used this book as research for his writing. Since I am planning to write some Cthulhu Mythos tales myself, I thought I should check out Lovecraft's own sources of inspiration!

About the Author
H.G. Wells (1866-1946) is rare among science fiction writers-—and virtually unique among wargame designers-—in that he was wildly successful and seen as a genius both during his life and long after his death. He published Little Wars in 1913, following the financial success bestowed upon him by works like The Time Machine. The fact that he wrote this book at all demonstrates a commitment to the concept of wargaming, and his execution of it reveals both his keen sense of humor and his abilities as a game designer.

While Wells’ work remains popular to this day, he is sometimes derided for having been a pacifist. By 1913, however, military technology had reached a level of lethality that threatened to make warfare between industrialized nations a zero-sum game bordering on apocalypse, as demonstrated by the Great War that broke out the year following the release of Little Wars. Survival of the species probably motivated the great author as much as pacifism.

Interesting, needs illustrations

I downloaded this for free and loaded it to both my Kindle Fire and Kindle reader. It's both fun and intersting to breeze through, especially providing some interesting insight into Wells' mind. However,the version I downloaded didn't have the illustrations that apparently are in some other versions. I recommend this book, but definitely get one with illustrations and diagrams.

An Important historical document

This is a seminal document in the evolution of modern recreational wargames. It is readable, charming, and personal. Wells recounts how he and a bunch of friends developed systematic playable games, whose rules are at the heart of most Hex-map-and-chip, Computer turn-based, Military-miniature, and a whole host of simultaneous-play-computer games.

No, it will not teach you how to program, or even to write a game. It does much more, reminding you how to play.

Great book, taught me how too play, needs illustrations to be fully enjoyed. He describes a battle for education purposes, but without illustrations it cannot be read with any clear sense of what was happening.
