Talk about florid writing

This book was generated from interviews with Kit Carson. It is an invaluable resource. It is as important a work as it is difficult to read. The author lays out events in more or less chronological order, but dates and references to the time of year and year itself are missing. The author's prose is florid. He's prone to go on at length about very little.
Kit is supposed to have described this work as "a pack of lies," before going on to generate his own autobiography. I suspect Kit's problem with the book had to do with characterizations of Kit and his actions in terms of the superlative and heroic. I can't fault the author too much for that. Kit was modest, but he was great.

Great original. Find another publication.

The book I received from Amazon should never have been published. It is fit only for reproduction into a digital archive. Anyone who received this book and kept it should have his/her head examined. I have a copy of the original 1848 publication by Dewitt Peters. I agree with the comments about the floridity of the author. When you consider the period in which it was written I find it to be an excellent book and expressive of the times and social mores of that period. If a reprint is going to be done of an older publication it should represent the original as close as economically possible and this one sure as hell doesn't.

Thin Gray Font - Difficult To Read - I do not recommend purchasing this book.

The font is printed in a gray, not black, but gray. As a result, it is difficult to read. I had planned to sit and read the book for twenty minutes, or so, and then decide if I should return it. However, while writing this review, I decided that trying to read the light print is going to be more of a hassle than going through the process of returning the book...
The font is no larger than the font you typically find in a smaller book, nor is the line spacing. I think the font is "Courier New". (There are half a dozen or more fonts out there that are very similar, and in the courier style, so I can't positively identify the font in this book...) I compared it to the fonts on my in my word processor, and it is close. However, the line width in the font in this book looks narrower, and prints in a gray. The font reminds me of what you would get when using an old typewriter that has a heavily used ribbon that should be replaced.
Oops, the page numbers are printed in a very black and very readable font. Obviously the printer has the capability to print a readable book...
Finally, the page inside the cover references illustrations. I found one page in the book that was a placeholder for an illustration, but there are none in the book. Not a big deal, but odd...
Finally, finally, on the last page before the back cover it is written that the book is printed in the USA, and that it was printed four days ago. This must be a print-on-demand book. It may have said that on the webpage I ordered from, but I'm not sure. It does not make any difference, I just wanted to note it.
The book is large, almost 8 1/2 x 11 inches.
I do not recommend purchasing this book.
