About the Author
Kathleen O'Neal Gear is a former state historian and archaeologist for Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska for the U.S. Department of the Interior. She has twice received the federal government's Special Achievement Award for ""outstanding management"" of our nation's cultural heritage.  W. Michael Gear holds a master's degree in archaeology and has worked as a professional archaeologist since 1978. He is principal investigator for Wind River Archaeological Consultants.  Together they have written the North America’s Forgotten Past series (People of the Longhouse, The Dawn Country, People of the Mist, People of the Wolf, among others); and the Anasazi Mysteries series. The Gears live in Thermopolis, WY.

Chapter 1
 
 
The lodge trapped the heat of the night, warm and muggy despite the rustling dry wind shivering the smoke-browned hide cover. The cover had been drawn down tight, firmly pegged to the hard clay in order to form a seal so that none of the malicious Spirit Powers might wiggle beneath to steal in and find a home. The People did that during a birthing. Newborn children had no soul, and into that warm haven any manner of evil could creep. To further ward off harmful powers, sagebrush—the lifegiver—had been piled around, the purposely bruised leaves adding a rich pungency to the desiccating air.
From where the boy crouched outside in the darkness, a frayed seam had come unraveled enough to allow a peephole view of the interior.
A single fire of punky cottonwood smoldered and smoked, adding to the stifling heat in the lodge and giving light in the midst of so dark and windy a night. The warm, steamy air issuing from inside puffed on the boy’s eye. It brought the odors of tanned hide, smoke, and sage to his nose. Mixed with it were other smells of sweat, wood, and fear. The delicately bitter taint of herbs wafted out as he watched.
Dancing Doe cried out where she lay naked on sweat-soaked robes. The smooth planes of her young face twisted and contorted as her belly contracted, seeking to force the child within from the safe confines of her womb. Between her breasts lay a natal bundle, a figure in the shape of Turtle—the magical animal that never sickened. Turtle brought health and luck. He disappeared with the coming of the winter gales, crawling down into the Earth Mother, returning when Father Sun brought spring and life to the world. The fetish on Dancing Doe’s breast had been constructed of finely sewn antelope hide and stuffed with sage, bits of twigs, feathers, and other sorts of Power.
On her belly, a series of designs had been drawn to center the Spirit Power of birth. The most important, a bright yellow stripe, had been painted down from the natal bundle between her full breasts to end in a point in the mat of her black pubic hair. The Path of Light, it would lead the child on its way to the world.
The boy stared, feeling the Power of the women’s chant within. Though he feared discovery, he couldn’t force himself away from the fascinating events. He knew his mother would punish him—and Two Smokes would no doubt even now be looking for him, beginning to worry about his absence from his sleeping robes.
A night of heat, a night of pain. Across the mound of Dancing Doe’s swollen belly, two women—one young, one old—looked at each other, worry etching their tension-worn faces.
The old woman’s gray hair glinted in the light. Patterns of wrinkles were cast into a tracery of shadows across her withered face. The set of her mouth had gone grim as she continued her vigil over the struggling woman. Back curved from age, she hunched, upper body bared and sweaty in the heat. Long-dry breasts hung low and flat over the folds of her stomach. Lines of scars puckered the wrinkled skin of her shoulders, mute evidence of the number of times she’d offered bits of herself to the Spirit World. The people called her Choke-cherry, after the bittersweet plant that grew in the high lands.
The boy watched as his mother, Sage Root, crouched to help, her anxious eyes on Dancing Doe’s fevered body. He knew that strained look. Worry marked the faces of all the People. Lines, like arroyos on the land, etched deep into their faces. But the helpless concern his mother betrayed frightened him. When Dancing Doe cried again, his gut tightened like sun-dried sinew.
Poor Dancing Doe. Her husband, Long Runner, had gone to hunt the foothills of the Buffalo Mountains. He’d never returned.
Chokecherry took a breath, reaching into a neatly sewn sack to withdraw damp sage and sprinkle it on the red eyes of coals. The perfume of life roiled up on a mist of steam.
She chanted softly in a singsong, “Come, little one. Come to walk in life and bless the land and sun and plants and animals. Come to join us on the path to the Starweb which leads to all good things. Hear our song. Hear our joy. Come, little one. Come into this world and make us smile.”
Dancing Doe grunted again, tensing the muscles of her powerful brown legs. She sucked a frantic breath, exhaling sharply, eyes clamped tight, teeth bared in a rictus of effort. Beads of sweat traced irregular paths down her trembling flesh.
Sage Root gripped Dancing Doe’s fingers in her own. “Easy. Breathe easy. It won’t be long now.”
Dancing Doe relaxed as the spasms passed. She gasped and looked up at the old woman, who continued chanting. “It doesn’t always take so long. Chokecherry, is it all right? Am I dying?”
The old woman finished the litany and lifted a shoulder, smiling. “I’ve borne children more difficult than this. It’s your first time. Those muscles have to be stretched and they don’t know how yet. Nothing’s torn. All that’s come out is water—washing you, you see, making the way clean. That’s all.” She looked across, laughing reassuringly. “Just like Sage Root. She kept me and Horn Core up for almost a whole day.”
Sage Root smiled wistfully. “I remember. But my son was born strong.”
Only when Dancing Doe closed her eyes and nodded did Sage Root’s expression tighten. Tension hung in the air like winter mist, reflected in the set of her features and in Choke-cherry’s burning eyes. It drifted from the rent in the lodge to settle like a water-heavy green hide on the boy’s shoulders.
Chokecherry resumed singing under her breath, taking another handful of sage leaves from the pouch and sprinkling it over the fire to fill the lodge with a clinging steamy odor.
Dancing Doe cried out, anguish palpable as her belly tightened.
“Should we call Heavy Beaver?” Sage Root’s hard eyes leveled on Chokecherry’s.
From where he sat outside, the boy winced. Heavy Beaver, the Spirit Dreamer of the People, brought that kind of reaction. In his head, a voice whispered, “No.”
Like a shadow in the night, he eased back, parting the piled sagebrush with careful fingers and creeping from his peephole. Free of the brush, he sprinted across the camp on light feet, heedless of the barking dogs. Before him, on the packed clay, the lodges huddled, squat, the bottoms rolled up over the peeled poles to allow the night breeze to blow through and cool the occupants where they slept on grass-padded bedding. Here and there, the sanguine eye of a dying fire cast a sunrise sheen on boiling pouches hanging from tripods, black orbs of hearthstones dotting the glowing coals.
Cottonwoods rose against the night sky, silhouetted black; the ghostly image of clouds could be vaguely discerned against the exposed patches of stars. In the trees, an owl hooted cautiously.
“Wolf Bundle,” the voice in his head whispered.
Before he reached the lodge, he recognized Two Smokes’ figure hobbling across the camp. No one walked like Two Smokes. “Two Smokes?” He changed course, trotting up.
“There you are! I’ve been half-sick worrying about you. Here your father is gone to hunt, your mother is—”
“I need you. I think we need the Wolf Bundle.”
“The Wolf Bundle?” Two Smokes cocked his head, the familiar curious expression hidden by the shades of night. Tone softening and reserved, he asked in his Anit’ah-accented voice, “Why do we need the Wolf Bundle, Little Dancer?”
He hesitated. “I just … well, a voice told me.”
“A voice? The one that speaks in your head?”
“Yes. Please, bring the Bundle,” he pleaded. “Dancing Doe’s baby isn’t coming. Mother and Chokecherry are worried. Dancing Doe is afraid she’ll die. And Chokecherry didn’t say it, but I could feel. You know, what she didn’t say. The look in her eyes. I thought the Wolf Bundle…”
“You thought right. Come. Let’s see what we can do.”
Two Smokes pivoted on his good leg, heading off in his wobbling stride for their lodge, the fringed skirts of his dress swaying in time to his off-balanced pace.
The berdache had always been an enigma to Little Dancer’s mind. No other man among the People wore a dress. In response to his childish questions, Two Smokes had smiled wistfully and replied that he was berdache—between the worlds. A woman in a man’s body.
The berdache had lived with the People for as long as Little Dancer could remember, always staying in their lodge—a strange silent man who’d come to them from the Anit’ah. Patiently he endured, despite the jokes and gibes and the open ridicule of the People. Alone and aloof, Two Smokes helped Little Dancer’s mother with chores, scraping hides, cooking stew, accepting the duties a second wife would.
Little Dancer’s father, Hungry Bull, the greatest hunter among the People, remained civil to Two Smokes, his innate disapproval tempered by some other veiled concern the boy had never been able to penetrate. Mystery surrounded the berdache like the swirl of smoke from a rain-wet fire.
Not that Little Dancer cared. For all his eight summers, Two Smokes remained his best friend, listening intently when Little Dancer told him of the voices he often heard. When his mother or father scolded him, he ran to Two Smokes like other children ran to their grandparents.
“So you were hiding around the birthing lodge?”
Little Dancer stiffened. “I…”
“You know, men should never get close to a birthing lodge. That’s a place for women. What if you change the Power?”
Shamed, Little Dancer dropped his gaze to the ghostly clay they trod, heart sinking in his chest. “I...

A compelling tale

In People of the Fire, the Gears bring us again into the ancient world of struggle, survival, and powerful Dreamers. The Dreamer, Little Dancer, is forced to choose between the woman he loves and the dangerous path of a Dreamer who walks between worlds. If he chooses his wife and children, the great drought may continue and the people will wage bloody wars for food and land. If he chooses to follow his Dreams, he may be consumed in order that his people may live. This second story in The First North Americans Series builds upon the legends created in the first novel. A compelling tale, I suffered and triumphed along with the characters.

Monster creatures on bellies crawl...

So this is what Heron was talking about. This book is a great follow up tp "Wolf", with the meaning of the One becoming clearer in the lives of the characters. Here we see the origin of the Wolf Bundle and the Black Stone Wolf that will be become very important to the ongoing saga of there books. I will admit, I loved what happened to Blood Bear, he really had it comming.
Keep moving south!

Repetitive series

I read the first three books in this series after reading the Anasazi mystery series. I thoroughly enjoyed the Anasazi series and expected a similar type product from these authors. The People of the ___ series seems to be the same story with the same cast of characters, same rapes and plunderings in every book. I am a big fan of series, and usually read the entire series once I start one; however, I didn't make it past #3 here. I purchased these at a second-hand book store, and am glad I only paid a buck each.

Bad publication of a good book. Pity

An editorial board (or perhaps it's just the one editor) who can't bother to get the spelling of the TITLE on the COVER PAGE right isn't interested in doing his/her job. I regret getting this edition even though I support what book surge is doing. This is the second book I've gotten on the boorsurge list, and the first (Sara Teasdale's Poetry Collection doesn't even bother have a contents page with proper listing of the poems.

About the Author
Sherwood Anderson was an American novelist, short-story writer, memoirist, essayist, and poet. A successful copywriter and business owner, Anderson s experience of a nervous breakdown precipitated his abandonment of his business and family in order to pursue a full-time writing career.

Anderson went on to produce more than twenty published works in his lifetime, including the enduring short-story collection, Winesburg, Ohio, and his semi-autobiographical style served as an influence for some of the brightest writers of the succeeding generation, including Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, and Thomas Wolfe. Anderson died in 1941.

Unhappy people trapped in sad webs of their own making

Sherwood Anderson published this collection of short stories in 1919 all set in fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio. Even though it's written in the third person, it's told through the narrative voice of George Willard, the town reporter, who shows up in most of the stories, sometimes taking an active role and at other times just telling a story.
It is obvious that the writer loves these people, and is frustrated at the isolation and unhappiness of their lives, even though he makes it clear that they hold within themselves everything needed to make them happy. The character in the first story is a dying old writer who is attempting to write about all the people he has known as a "book of grotesques". What follows is the collection of stories, which each character fulfilling that expectation.
There are the young lovers who don't quite connect; there is a old man so obsessed with religious fervor that he attempts to sacrifice his grandson; there is a married man who regrets it all and tries to warn a younger man of future unhappiness; there's a doctor and a sick woman who try to connect. The book is full of people who toil all their lives and never achieve happiness. As I made my way through the book I kept hoping that even one of the characters would rise above the morass. It didn't happen.
The writer has a wonderful sense of place and the town of Winesburg in the early part of the 20th Century is very real. These people were not poor or disadvantaged in the usual sense of the word; they didn't suffer fire, floods or famine. Instead, they trapped themselves in their own psychological webs that made it impossible for them to lead anything but sad unfulfilled lives. This is a fine book and stands alone as a clear voice of its time.

A daughter's gift...

... Isn't one of the ultimate benchmarks of successful parenting when your child selects a book from her bookshelf, and says: "Here Dad, you may enjoy this"? Of course I had to overcome that instinctive shudder when I recognized the not very "zippy" title as belong to one of those "school assignment" books I had so successfully dodged. Yet considering it is far past the time to reconsider that initial aversion, and that the only teacher I have to please is myself; and then there is the matter of the pedigree of the recommender... so why not?

I did not get past the introduction before I uncovered a recommendation that reinforced the others. Sherwood Anderson was a mentor to both Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, no small matter in itself. The not very fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio is based on the very real town of Clyde, Ohio, wherever that is. It proves to be located not that far off the shores of Lake Erie, between Cleveland and Toledo. Clyde still has only around 6,000 people, and their website promotes the virtues of small town living. But where is their most famous writer? You have to "drill down" two levels in their website, to find a brief, two sentence mention of the writer who literally "put them on the map." They'd rather talk about their Civil War General, James McPherson, or the Whirlpool plant. So, perhaps the ultimate endorsement: he had told too much about them, a realistic assessment of the town that jars with the "pro-business" image the website promotes, and thus numerous folks today are still not fond of him.

The book itself is composed of 24 short stories; many of them could be "stand alone" in their excellence. In some cases the character appears only in that story, such as The Reverend Curtis Hartman in "The Strength of God," or Enoch Robinson in "Loneliness." There are other characters, such as Helen White, and George Willard, who is a reporter for the local newspaper at 18, and is a thinly disguised Sherwood Anderson, who appear in multiple stories. Anderson's introductory story, entitled "The Book of the Grotesques" about a writer who: "All of the men and women the writer had ever known had become grotesques," which may be a bit harsh, but clearly this book is peopled with life's outliers, and many "lives of quiet desperation." Issues that haunt the papers today were covered by Anderson then, such as the male teacher who may have placed his hands on the boys once too often, and was run out of town, and the female teacher who had "a thing" for a lad 12 years her junior. There is also the voyeuristic preacher, and the farmer who is an instrument of "God's will." All not your normal Chamber of Commerce fare.

Anderson's prose is lean; his characters are drawn tightly and swiftly, and he seems to have a knack for the specific detail that says so much more about the person. There is also much normalcy in the book; much concerns the longing of the human heart, the figurative and literal groping with the opposite sex that is part of the coming of age process, and beyond. As in real life, the relationships can become complex and ambivalent, and Anderson even speculates on the nature of the solace his fictional mother may have been obtaining from the local doctor. Some reviewers were concerned that everything didn't tie together in the end - but I figure that is the essence of real life. In the conclusion, George Willard, just like the real life Sherwood Anderson, boards the train, and leaves town, seeking his place in the wider world. The irony is that the material for his finest writing was obtained during his first 18 years, in Clyde.

Much belated apologies, certainly for myself, as well as those 1-star reviewers, to the English teachers who tried in their Sisyphean task. Mea culpa. And thanks to my daughter for this solid 5-star read.

Surprisingly Modern

I'm ashamed to say that I avoided this book for decades - decades! - based soley on a cover. My mother had the book on her bookshelves, an older edition with a painting of a turn of the century couple courting on the front. It looked vaguely impressionist, and left me to conclude that the stories inside would probably be a bunch of sentimentalist claptrap. How wrong I was!

The book inside is more akin to a Hopper painting than a Degas. Anderson manages an amazing level of character development within the short stories. The stories themselves work independently, but also work together to tell the story of an American Midwestern town. And the feeling one is left with is that everything you have read is essentially and authentically American.

To comment on the Kindle version specifically, it seems well formatted to this reader. I've noticed a typo here and there, but nothing glaring, and nothing that distracts from the experience of reading the book.

What better than the original source to explain a complicated topic?

If you are like me, and have always been confused by different definitions of Pragmatism, this book will explain it to you (as it was intended to the its first audience, when it was written by William James in 1907). While it is often filed away under philosophy, Pragmatism is best described as a method. I would highly recommend this book as a starting point if you want to delve deeper into the subject matter, and see what it has evolved to today with regard to its application in the Social Sciences.

The Empirical Rationalist. A Mediator.

Comprising the work are a series of lectures given by William James between November 1906 and January 1907 at Lowell Institute and Columbia University.

Reflected upon positively are the philosophies of John Stuart Mills, Fredrich Schiller and John Dewey. We are provided James’ vision of how tragically divisive the predominant philosophies of the time were, and still are – rationalism versus empiricism, the two major philosophical encampments, with their totally juxtaposed issues, their unwillingness to admit the possibilities of the others validity and their subsequent bickering and passive warfare against each other.

James takes many positions, and makes his sides, but never states either is wrong, only farther from what might be his perceived truth as it relates their stances. Arguing monism vs. pluralism, the matters of God, the universe, humanism, the means and ways we come by truth or Truth, James attempts to relay a position which is to the benefit of man, clearly one where the more experienced, often times more educated man is placed in the best possible position to ascertain what it is that is ‘truth’, what guiding principles he holds to direct his life and the means and ways by which even the shallowest ideas hold their benefit. For in Pragmatism nothing is wrong, no ideas are wrong, so long as they provide a benefit to the beholder in some fashion.

The dilemma stems from the parties being divided into two predominant philosophical camps – instead of democrat and republican think empiricist and rationalist – “Most men wish both facts and religion. Empiricism gives facts without religion. Rationalism gives religion without facts’, (21) and ‘empiricist’ meaning your lover of facts in all their crude variety, ‘rationalist’ meaning your devotee to abstract and eternal principles.’ (97) Because, it’s posited, no man can live without both facts and principles, it makes very little sense to assert oneself entirely to one encampment. Acting as an apologist for the pair, James states: ‘Rationalism sticks to the logic and the empyrean. Empiricism sticks to the external senses. Pragmatism is willing to take anything, to follow either logic or the sense.’ (593)

The major divisive lines along which the two disagree include: the notion of monism (rationalistic, one overseer and uniting principle) and pluralism (empiricism, making a whole of the sum total of its parts). James notes that, of man: ‘He wants facts; he wants science; he also wants a religion.’ (140) And we can’t have both if we’re entirely steeped in one system of belief.

In efforts to settle the debate, quiet the dissenters on either side, James offers the reader ‘the oddly-named thing pragmatism as a philosophy that can satisfy both kinds of demand.’ (268)

Pragmatism quickly becomes the philosophy of practical significance, read more precisely: consequence to our daily life and function. We are left with ‘Theories (which become) instruments, not answers to enigmas’ (400) and we’re left with ‘only an attitude of orientation’ (409), it is a ‘looking towards last things, fruits, consequences, facts.’ (410). And the ideas which aide us in acquiring some feeling from these consequences are no less important, for the truth behind an idea means it’s power to work – here James also points out that scientific laws are but generally guiding principles, not formed concretely – and especially so in the humanities, of which philosophy is a part.

For the pragmatist ‘Truth, for him, becomes a class-name for all sorts of definite working values in experience.’ (506) This is why the rationalist rebels against him. And yet, theological ideas also bare their benefit in that, if they prove good and effective for the individual they offer principle by which a prosperous life might be led.

Also for the pragmatist: ‘The truth is the name of whatever proves itself to be good in the way of belief, and good, too, for definite, assignable reasons.’ (563) – Contrast this possibly with Nietzsche’s ‘Beyond Good and Evil’ but then pseudo-apologize with his ‘Will to Power’ – an individual does what they do simply because it’s seen as being beneficial for them in one manner or another.

James tackles the idea of ‘Free Will’ – which he asserts is the ability to expect history not to repeat itself, not so much that we have means to choose a path. He finds that adoption of the Melioristic philosophy: that through human action we can make the world better, is a most profitable stance.

Regarding the Truth: ‘True ideas are those that we can assimilate, validate, corroborate and verify.’ (1372). In other words – truth happens and is made, it is not a stand-alone, from the beginning of all time, true. This occurs through the processes of verification and validation. Thusly ideas are ‘useful because it is true or that it is true because it is useful.’ (1396). Because of the nature of verification and validation much of our truth lives ‘on a credit system’ where ‘thoughts and beliefs pass so long as nothing challenges them.’ (1420) – (bear in mind this is a simplified surmise).

Strange, but Great!

Well that was odd.
When you start reading a Classic, any Classic, you have to remember that it won't written like the books of today. I don't just mean that the wording will be more difficult, or even the sentence structure, I mean the viewpoint that the story is told from. I had expected this to be told from the point of view of the protagonist, Dr. Jekyll. Instead, it was told from the viewpoint of one of his friends, Mr. Utterson. I liked how it was told that way, you were able to see the other characters' reactions to Dr. Jekyll's strange behavior, and the curiosity to what may have caused it. You also are able to see their feelings toward Mr. Hyde, and how they completely disagree with Jekyll's decision to trust Hyde.
The majority of the story is told this way. Hyde is a hated man, one who people despise at first glance, thought they can never place just why that is. Jekyll is respected and loved, but has begun to act strangely, with a lot of fear and distress. Nobody can quite figure out why this is, or why he spend time with Mr.Hyde, especially after Hyde murders an important man. Gleefully, he murdered him gleefully.
The last two chapters change a bit. The second to last chapter is told as a letter from Lanyon, a friend of both Utterson and Jekyll. It tells of how he did Jekyll a favor, only to discover that Jekyll is Hyde, as Jekyll drank a cure before him. And the last chapter is told from the viewpoint of Dr. Jekyll himself.
Now is when it gets weird.
I had always thought that Jekyll had some mental issue, then read the book. I discovered that he believed that people were commingled of both good and bad, and this fascinated him. Long story short, he creates an elixir which he believes will separate the parts into two different entities. He succeeds, and for a while is able to switch freely between his different personalities. He enjoys evil-doing as Hyde and is guilt free when he returns to being Jekyll. But you can see him going crazy by his words. Though he enjoyed his ability at first, he never referred to either man, Jekyll or Hyde, as 'I'. It was always by their first name. But then he started having trouble controlling the side of him that was Hyde, and was for a little while, referring to him as Hyde (the hate he had for Hyde was very evident), and to Jekyll as 'I'. Jekyll and Hyde grew to hate each other with a passion, and the only reason that Hyde ever let Jekyll return was fear, fear of being caught and killed for the murder he committed., But he also feared Jekyll, since Jekyll had the power to kill him, thought this was only through suicide.
Jekyll and Hyde are not two different people, not really. Because it isn't like he couldn't remember what had happened as Hyde, he remembered it all. He kept him mind no matter what personality he was. The only difference was their morals. Their morals, their desires, their fear, all the things that make someone an individual were different. But it was the same mind.
Engaging? definitely. Strange and potentially disturbing? Wonderfully so! Recommended? Yes.

Read before watching modern interpretations

It's interesting to see how people have adapted this work to the stage or screen, but comparison means that you have to read the book! Having seen a few adaptations recently (a short series by BBC and on stage in Indianapolis) I can't help but wonder and how Hyde has changed. A character of unadulterated evil has been turned into (Spoilers!) a representation of blind, unhampered love at any cost. With that love, comes elements of loyalty. Slowly, the antagonist becomes a morally ambiguous, if not outright, protagonist of a character. We grow to 'understand' and sympathize with him.

But not so in this book. Here, we have a character not meant to be reasoned out or liked or glorified. A mindless beast personifying man's sin, epitomizing the grittiness of all the worst of our humanity, Hyde is fearful of death alone.

And the rest I leave to you, reader.

I thoroughly enjoyed this 'classic'. I had never read the original story before. My depiction of Jekyll/Hyde has been shaped over a lifetime of modern portrayal. Reading the original story brings it into a whole new light and gives the reader a better understanding of what Stevenson was aiming for. Also, reading these 'Victorian' age stories gives a different outlook on how we see today, be it religion, psychology, or morality. I highly recommend.

For a free version of the history of France it was an excellent read, very detailed.
It was a bit disjointed in places but I guess this isnt supposed to be a novel.
