Twain At His best

All of these "Roughing It" books are Twain at his best as he travels from St. Louis to Hawaii. His descriptions of the terrain, the living conditions, and the people are outstanding and laced with some of the best humor and satire ever written. This series, together with "Life on the Mississippi" and "The Innocents Abroad" are among the best of American literature. They should be required reading in schools to impart the knowledge about real people doing real jobs and not the badly written history tombs filled with boring politics and dates.

This was one of my favorite poems when I was in 8th grade! I never forgot the beginning of this poem. Interesting to re read the whole thing.

John Greenleaf Whittier, Snowbound (Reilly and Britton, 1865)

I have problems with a good deal of pre-twentieth century poetry. Most of them can be summed up by obtaining, and skimming, a copy of John Greenleaf Whittier's Snowbound, a relatively short poem (for being a whole book) published in a rather lavish illustrated edition by Reilly and Britton at the beginning of the last century.

First, while the best poets use rhythm (in this case, iambic tetrameter) and rhyme as a way to challenge themselves, the rest use it as a convenient way to tell a boring story while keeping the reader's attention with rhyme. Or perhaps in this case I'm being too generous; there is no story here, more an impressionist piece on a number of friends and family of Whittier's who are snowed in for a night. I'm all for impressionism, but a hundred fifteen (albeit ten lines per page) pages of it?

Second, and most importantly, long poems from the nineteenth century sometimes have sections in them that have nothing to do with the rest of the poem; extensive wanderings of thought that require to poet to get back on track int he most jarring of ways. Such is the case here as Whittier, an abolitionist, goes off his snow-bound folks for a number of pages while injecting a rant about slavery. Don't bother trying to figure out what it has to do with the rest of the poem; you could spend years trying to reconcile the two with no success.

Lastly, in order to keep a reader's interest, rhythm and rhyme have to be used in something approaching an inventive way. Having a comma at the end of every line and no variation at all in the rhythm makes for an exceptionally boring poem (or perhaps a passable pop song); over a hundred pages of it makes for good kindling.

Awful. Absolutely awful. *

This was required reading in my High School English Literature class, and well worth re-reading. I've done so every few years. Whittier is a master American poet. It's particularly good for reading aloud. In those days, things were written so as to be read aloud which now is almost a lost art.

About the Author

LARRY NIVEN is the multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of the Ringworld series, along with many other science fiction masterpieces. His Beowulf's Children, coauthored with Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes, was a New York Times bestseller. He lives in Chatsworth, California.
EDWARD M. LERNER, a physicist and computer scientist, toiled in the vineyards of high tech for thirty years as everything from engineer to senior vice president. Then suitably intoxicated, he began writing full time. Lerner lives in Virginia with his wife, Ruth.

A little info, no spoilers

First, let me say that I enjoyed this book and think it is a good and appropriately epic, if still open-ended, end to the Ringworld and Fleet of Worlds series. The only thing that I disliked was that the two main story lines stayed very separate from each other and did not feel connected. I wanted to read them both, but, as it was, it read a bit more like two separate stories that were being told in the same book, rather than a single story with multiple viewpoints. Again, since this is Niven and Lerner, both stories are great, so the overall experience is great and the book is rewarding.

I also felt like it could be a stand alone book, but, to get the full enjoyment from it, you should read the previous Fleet of Worlds books (at least Destroyer and Betrayer) and the Ringworld books (at least Ringworld's Children).

I find it handy to have the series information available in the review and it can be hard to really see on the Amazon site, here is a snippet from Wikipedia, showing the order of the books in the Fleet of Worlds series and the Ringworld series:

No Place to Enter Known Space

For more than 40 years, Larry Niven has been writing Known Space stories. Fate of Worlds: Return from the Ringworld reaches back to plot threads from some of the very earliest short stories and, like the earlier Fleet of World stories, weaves them into the tale of what happened after the conclusion of Ringworld's Children and the plot twists at the end of Betrayer of Worlds (Fleet of Worlds). It's an okay story, although the ending has been telegraphed by "Ringworld's Children." But it's absolutely not the place to start exploring Known Space.

As told in Niven's Ringworld's Children, the Ringworld is gone, snatched from the increasingly dangerous Fringe War before it might have been destroyed. Louis Wu and the Puppeteer we know as Hindmost escaped (or perhaps were permitted to escape). The various species involved in the Fringe War, frustrated by the disappearance of the prize, turn their collective attention instead to the Puppeteers' migration, the Fleet of Worlds, with deadly intent. And the Puppeteers themselves are weakened and divided, as well as famously being cowards.

It's a possible conclusion to both the Ringworld series and the Fleet of Worlds series, although it doesn't have to be. And while it suffers from some logical flaws and more than a bit of ret-conning, on the whole it is a satisfactory, if not surprising, conclusion. There are still any number of loose ends: most of the Protector exodus from the Core is still out there. We still don't know what happened to Carlos Wu. The two new sets of aliens - one introduced in Fate of Worlds: Return from the Ringworld are still Out There.

Other reviewers have provided a suggesting reading list to work through before undertaking Fate of Worlds: Return from the Ringworld. It's probably a good idea. Otherwise, you risk being completely baffled. Not Niven's best; not even the best of the Fleet of Worlds stories. But a good yarn for those who know the turf.

A Good WrapUp

Fate of Worlds by Larry Niven and Edward M. Lerner

I read Ringworld in the early 1970's and frankly I know I liked it as I ranked it as an E for excellent in my book database but beside the basic premise, I don't remember a great deal. This book would have served me better 20 years ago. As is it gathers together the characters from several books and a couple of series and attempts tie them together under the label of the Known Earth Series.

Frankly I'm not sure this was a wrap up and not a precursor to a new series. The number of variables, races, venues and philosophies strains my recollection. I have only read 28 of Niven's books and have uniformly enjoyed them. Sadly I didn't really enjoy this because I have just enough recollection of the players but have trouble remembering the game they played. Some reviews I read stated it stands alone well, I would disagree and feel at least brushing up on the precursors would make the book more compelling.

I would recommend either going to Wikipedia and brushing up on background or tracking down all the books and reading them.

About the Author

Henry van Dyke was an American religious writer, lecturer, and clergyman. Educated at the Theological Seminary at Princeton University, van Dyke returned to the school after his graduation as a Professor of English Literature and became an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1913 he was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson, his former classmate, as the ambassador to the Netherlands and Luxembourg, a job that he maintained throughout the First World War. His most famous short stories include "The Story of the Other Wise Man" and "The First Christmas Tree," which, like many of his other works, centered around moral and religious themes. After a lifetime of public service and religious leadership, Henry van Dyke died in 1933 at the age of 80.

The Apostle of Germany and the First Christmas Tree

Winfried (a.k.a Boniface) was charged by Pope Gregory II to convert the pagans east of the Rhine. This is his tale of converting German pagans to Christianity.

I. The Call of the Woodsman. The story begins in the German Forrest in 722 AD. King Winfried asks his grandson, "Shall I tell you what religion means to those who are called and chosen to dare and to fight, and to conquer the world for Christ? It means to launch out into the deep." The King asks his grandson to travel with him into the forest.

II. The Trail Through the Forrest. King Winfried, Prince Gregor and their band travel through the forest to the Thunder-Oak of Geismar (a tree representing the God of Thunder and War) with the goal of teaching their kinsmen and supplanting the Hammer of Thor with the Cross of Christ.

III. The Shadow of the Thunder Oak. The travelers come upon a great throng of people around a fire awaiting the human sacrifice of Gundhar's son, who was chosen to die so that he could bring a message to Valhalla, and bring a message to Thor. King Winfried intervenes.

IV. The Felling of the Tree. As the council of kinsmen convened to determine whether to kill Winfried, a miracle occurs; and the Thunder Oak is replaced by a Christmas Tree.

Thundering Religious Story of the First Christmas Tree

A group of pilgrims venture into England to convert the people into Christians. Led by Wilfred, the group challenges the Germanic people's living there and urges them to dismiss their Viking Gods. When the people recognize Latin being spoken they realize they are encountering learned people. Wilfred chops down an enormous oak the people see as the Thunder god and behind it stands a young firm tree which the people carry home to be decorated in the public hall with lights. This story was good for me to read for the history and I enjoyed the writer's knowledge of the Viking gods and Germanic peoples. The booming religiosity of the writing was a bit much but gave me perspective on the time period of the author's time and his purpose for writing the piece.

Back to my childhood

Treasure of the Incas is a well written story, although slightly more formal in language than current literature. It reminds me of stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs and is full of wonderful travelogue type detail, from the history of the area to the locale to the types of preparations made for each adventure the characters engaged in. The story contains brigands and attacks by "savages" for excitement, but the actual location of the treasure ( of course they found treasure!) was an interesting twist at the end. This story is an enjoyable adventure read, with characters that are honest, friendly and honorable. It made you want to be on the journey with them.

Good description of surroundings for visualization to set yourself within the story. It flows at first then slows down, or gets bogged down, then the pace picks back up... Has that classic puzzle to be solved to find the treasure.. Not a complicated plot, even the puzzle not that complicated. Very pleasant, great for reading for that hour or so to wind down your day!!!

This is a Great Adventure Story

Most of Henty's books I am familiar with are historical novels and excellent ones, but this is a straight adventure story not unlike Edgar Rice Burroughs or H. Rider Haggard"s non-fantasy Alan Quatermain novels. It is set in the late 19th century when the two adventurers set sail for Peru aboard a three masted barque which must sail around the Horn to get there. The description of the ship and the lives of seamen is very detailed and accurate as well as that of Peru and its people at that time.
Henty, (1832-19020 usually researched his novels by ordering several books on the subject he was writing on from libraries and consulting them before beginning writing. Some of his books were written about events (such as the Crimean War) that he was actually at. Hence these books are thus written with greater detail as Henty drew upon his first-hand experiences of people, places, and events.For those who love travel and history including archeology, this is a real plus.His vivid descriptions certainly place you right there with the characters involved, They are very likeable and Henty has a good moral compass. They repelled a savage Indian attack with a method that would cause MacGiver to take notes.The ancient castle they discovered was a great example of why I love archaeology and the ruins of antiquity.

It is interesting that the first god of the Incas was Pachacamac, "the creator of the world" the chief deity of the Incas. The Social Darwinist interpretation of religious "evolution" has been pretty much overthrown by the fact that polytheism has been shown to have developed after monotheism, not before.

An interesting sidelight is that the British Pound at the time of this story was equal to five American dollars. Workman usually received a dollar a day for their work. If you were good at what you did, you might make $1.50. Consult the facsimile of the 1900 Sears Catalog to see what a dollar would buy back then.

The story, set in Peru, concerns a British naval lieutenant, Harry Prendergast, who is in love with a very beautiful woman, Hilda Fortescue, whose father is very wealthy and who wants his daughter to marry a rich man. A friend of his tells him of a highly competent native Indian guide in Peru who might be able to lead him to a lost treasure of the Incas. This man, Dias, owes his friend a debt of gratitude for having saved his life. He gives Harry a letter explaining to Dias that if he wants to repay his debt, he could do it by helping the lieutenant. Harry has gotten an agreement that he has two years to improve his fortune. At the end of that time, if he fails, he must give up all claim to her. Spurred on by desperation he departs for Peru accompanied by his rather immature younger brother. Meeting with Dias and his wife, he is immediately impressed that they would be ideal companions for this expedition. They get together the necessary gear and take off into the wilds of Peru, a place that Anglo-Saxons rarely visit.
The story contains confrontations with brigands and attacks by "savages" as well as the unique creatures of this place such as the small, harmless looking wild pigs which when one of their number is killed, attack like an army of ants, relentless and undeterred even by dozens of their number killed.
All in all this is an excellent adventure story which made me feel like I had actually visited the Peru of that era!

This book gave all the details of the mutiny that took place. I learned all about what happened before, during and after that fateful day. It goes into some detail about the men involved, their families and the trial that took place. I found it so interesting that I read Voyages Around the World 1768
- 1790 after which gave more details about Captain Cook's interesting career. It took a lot of guts to sail around the world like they did and it makes for great reading
