If you're wondering which Wealth of Nations to purchase, get the Bantam paperback. This is Smith's complete and unabridged final version of the Wealth of Nations. It provides footnotes on Smith's wording, the historical context, and the differences between Smith's 5th edition and previous editions. In addition, the margin of the pages contain useful notes which summarize Smith's writing. For the price, this is clearly the superior choice.

Now, if you're wondering whether you should undertake such an endeavor, let me just say that Adam Smith was a professor of rhetoric. He explains everything so precisely, yet so comprehensible. Smith's writing is by no means difficult; I actually found it a surprisingly easy read given its antique nature. Once you get through the first chapter, you get quite used to Smith's writing style. If you put adequate time and energy into it, it's not hard at all.

How to lift a nation out of poverty

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations brilliantly analyzes how a nation's living standards can be raised. In large part his wisdom still applies today. To briefly summarize Smith's thinking:
1. Standards of living are determined by the productivity of workers.
2. Productivity of workers is greatly enhanced by specialization (see the famous example of the pin factory in the first chapter!).
3. Greater specialization is possible only if the market size grows. Thus, government laws that prohibit growth of the market hurt specialization, and thereby keep living standards from rising. This is why Smith opposed laws that restricted trade or created monopolies. Smith actively worked to keep Britain from going to war against its American colonies over trade issues. The Wealth of Nations is a political tract designed to sway the British parliament (obviously it failed in that regard).
4. Productivity of workers is enhanced by raising their wages.
5. Productivity of workers is enhanced by publicly funded education.
6. The role of markets is exquisitely analyzed by Smith. Self-interest leads people to carry out private activities that lead to social betterment, as if by an "invisible hand."
7. It is a serious misinterpretation of Smith to assert that greed or selfishness is the same as self-interest. Smith labored hard to avoid any such confusion. Please see his other book which addresses this specific issue: The Theory of Moral Sentiments.
8. Clearly Smith favored limited government. But Smith was NOT a strict advocate of laissez-faire. He ended his illustrious career as commissioner of customs, a job he took seriously, and which he would not have taken had he not thought this level of intervention in the economy warranted.
Read the first three chapters of WN: they contain the essence of the arguments above. Then look in the index to find reference to the "invisible hand" "monopoly" "colonies" and other subjects of interest.
Buy the GLASGOW EDITION of the Wealth of Nations. This is the most up-to-date annotated version. It is available (very cheaply) from the Liberty Fund Press in America. If you only want one copy, that is the only one to buy today.

Watch Out!

I have no criticism with Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations." My criticism is with the Great Minds Series edition of the book. The Great Minds Series is an abridged version. Huge chunks have been edited out of the book, yet nowhere do they let you know this before making the purchase. I bought this book specifically because I wanted to cite it, and I can't because the parts I wanted to quote have been edited out.
Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" is a worthy book for any private library, but purchase an edition other than the one offered by the so-called "Great Minds Series."

Excellent, but ......

I'm not done reading yet but feel compelled to point out one problem to others: the display equations are too small, almost unreadable, on my Kindle Fire HD. The text of the book itself is adjustable in size, as usual, but these other elements are not: Figures, code fragments, console output, and the aforementioned display equations. The figures are about right in size, but the code and output is too large. But, again, the worst problem is that the equations are like a thumbnail of a thumbnail in size -- making subscript and superscript letters nearly invisible.

I've had similar issues with other technical books on the Kindle, but this is the worst example so far. If the author could boost the size of the equations 4x and perhaps reduce the size of the the code/program output, and reissue this otherwise very helpful guide, it would be greatly appreciated.

Practical Math Applied to Neural Networks

Its freshman calculus and applied math rolled together in a developing brew.that suggests but never leads to a specific process to design neural networks. This introduction is gentle and it will all make sense if you buy another few books on the subject. However, this is not a one stop shop for neural network design. The book is more a basic presentation of various mathematical tools that can be applied to neural networks.

The book requires the reader to have familiarity with basic calculus and derivatives. Otherwise it's a walk in the park. After all, you are going to have to stretch a bit to benefit from this knowledge, so the effort is worth it. The title does say that this is an introduction, so don't be too disappointed that everything isn't laid out for you. There is no effort to categorize the functions introduced or to produce an overall design process of selection appropriate for a particular task. That information comes from further study in this area. Happy hunting.

I would like to praise the author for making the functional application and training of the neural network simple enough to get the reader started. This is a complex and potentially confusing area of applied mathematics. As is advised in these areas, it is best to learn to walk before trying to run. This book will help the reader walk correctly along this path.

Once you understand the proper processes, the world of application will open up for you. This material can be used in pattern recognition, financial forecasting image resolving, flight combat, and vehicle ride control. Buckle up and enjoy the flight.

Great for anyone who is new to nerual networks and has relatively less math knowledge

Unlike many neural network textbook that really focuses on difficult concepts, this book is straightforward and focuses on practical knowledge. Definitely worth $10. Lastly, although the book says that you only need to know high school algebra to understand it, I highly recommend that you have some knowledge of calculus (if you are interested in neural networks, you probably do already).

The recent adaptation of Moll Flanders for Masterpiece Theater is a book-lover's dream: the dialogue and scene arrangement are close enough to allow the viewer to follow along in the book. The liberties taken with the tale are few (some years of childhood between the gypsies and the wealthy family are elided; Moll is Moll throughout the tale, rather than Mrs. Betty; Robert becomes Rowland, etc.) and the sets avoid the careless anachronism of the movie version released earlier this year.

The breasts, raised skirts, tumbling hair and heavy breathing on the small screen might catch you by surprise if you don't read the book carefully (as might Moll's abandonment of her children on more than one occasion). Unlike his near-contemporary John Cleland (_Fanny Hill_), Defoe was trying to keep out of jail, and so didn't dwell on the details of "correspondence" between Moll and her varied lovers. But on the page and on the screen, Moll comes across quite clearly as a woman who might bend, but refuses to break, and who is intent on having as good a life as she can get.

E. M. Forster in Aspects of the Novel considers Moll and her creator's art in some detail. While he finds much to criticize in Defoe's ability to plot (where did those last two children go, anyway?), he is as besotted with Moll as I am. Immoral? Sure -- but immortal, and never, ever dull. We hope at least a few of the viewers of the recent adaptation take a couple hours to discover the original, inimitable Moll Flanders.

Having seen bits of two recent film adaptations in the last couple of months on television, and being a budding 18th century scholar, I decided it was time I picked up my own copy of "Moll Flanders" and see the actual product on its own terms. A story no less about a castaway and delinquent than "Crusoe," in "Moll Flanders," Defoe attempts to set down the history of a woman with a wild and often desperate life. A character of infinitely more interiority and reflection than Crusoe, Moll gives us through a first person narrative, a look into various stations of life in 18th century England and America.
The novel begins with a tip of the hat to that fine progenitor of the novel, "Don Quixote," a Gines-like acknowledgment that Moll, as the author of her own story, cannot complete that story within the text of the novel, unless people can write when they are deceased. Amusements aside, Moll begins her story as Crusoe begins his, with an immediate acknowledgment of the instability of the modern self - the corruption of her own name. Born in Newgate prison, and having never known her mother, Moll finds herself among gypsies and landed gentry before settling in Colchester for the term of her youth. Here, she founds her sense of social ambition, unusual even for Jane Eyre in the 19th century, as one in which she figures to be a gentlewoman by earning her own living. Various mishaps and misadventures lead her through marriages, whoredom, and thievery as Moll attempts to find her place in the world as a woman of common birth. Early on she learns the lessons that will aid her on her journey, viz., the value of money, quick wit, and a sense of her own sexuality.
While Defoe certainly does not sugar-coat the wrongs of woman in the early 18th century - delving deeply into issues of feminine helplessness before the law, the difficulties of procuring stable employment, and various reproductive issues such as adoption, abortion, and infant mortality - yet he maintains a consistent character of Moll as an extremely strong, adaptive, and resilient female character. The most riveting facet of Moll throughout is her own sense of self-worth and importance, especially in her own history. For instance, while chronicling an encounter with a former lover, Moll tells us that while his adventures are worth their own narrative, this is "my story, not his." Moll's strength in the midst of doubt, desperation, and general loneliness keeps the reader's constant interest and admiration.
Defoe's exploration of inter-gender relationships are worthy of note themselves for the sheer variety of social, economic, and personal situations he includes in the novel. The economic theme stands out among these, and provides a link back to the preoccupations of "Robinson Crusoe." Like Crusoe, Moll is always aware of the value of her personal possessions, and conscious of how to exploit and husband her resources to best advantage. Also like Crusoe, "Moll Flanders" is keenly aware of the possibilities and drawbacks of English colonial ventures in America. Defoe's efforts to link all these themes to the lot of the English prison population, the family unit, and indentured servants and African slaves, are all managed extremely well within the text of the novel. For all this, "Moll Flanders" remains an entertaining, satisfying, relevant novel, and stands for me above "Crusoe" as a work of high literary value.

Excellent if you can get past the writing style.

'Tho the plot, being interesting in the extream, must be confess'd to be well-done, and alike the characters, being well-develop'd, plausible, and even sympathetic ('tho they be theives, felons, bigamists, and worse), must be similarly confess'd, still the writing style, being as it is extreamly archaic as well in spelling, grammar, and syntax, as in punctuation, the modern reader must be foarwarn'd: if he had difficulty with the parsing of this, the principle paragraph of this review, or finds the prospect of reading a story consisting of eight and forty more than two hundreds of pages in a like style daunting, he should give the project up as impracticable.
If, on the other hand, you had no trouble with that paragraph, I daresay that you'll enjoy this book, even if, as the father of the English novel, Defoe had yet to engender the chapter break.
Also it should be pointed out this may well be the first novel in which a male author attempts to write a story in which the lead character is female, and Defoe does a surprisingly good job of it.

The first great female character in English prose

I think MOLL FLANDERS is my favorite novel of all time. The novel form was in its infancy at the time MOLL FLANDERS was written. In fact, Defoe is often called "the father of the English novel." Actually, as a novel it's very primitive. Defoe's fiction is usually a first person narrative told by an ambitious person, recounting how he got where he is today. In Moll Flanders, Defoe presents the autobiography of a woman who rises from an ignominious birth in Newgate Prison, and a childhood as a servant. Early on, Moll learns that she is beautiful and that she is attractive to the opposite sex. What's great about the book is its delicious irony. Oh there are times when she gets caught in her own traps, she's a sly one, that Moll. It's very difficult at times to think of Moll as a fictional character. But she is, in fact, the first great female character in English prose. I never cease to be amazed that the book was written by a man. There are moments in the book that I find very moving, like when she realizes that she's no longer pretty enough to attract men without resorting to makeup. "I never had to paint my face before." And of course there's that unsettling surprise she receives toward the end of the novel. This is a great and important book and hardly anyone has read it. I don't know why. I have recommended this book to probably a hundred people. To the best of my knowledge, not a single one of them has taken my advice. It's their loss. I LOVE Moll Flanders.

About the Author
Often referred to as the American Agatha Christie, Mary Roberts Rinehart was an American journalist and writer who is best known for the murder mystery The Circular Staircaseconsidered to have started the Had-I-but-known school of mystery writingand the popular Tish mystery series. A prolific writer, Rinehart was originally educated as a nurse, but turned to writing as a source of income after the 1903 stock market crash. Although primarily a fiction writer, Rinehart served as the Saturday Evening Post s correspondent for from the Belgian front during the First World War, and later published a series of travelogues and an autobiography. Roberts died in New York City in 1958.

Mary Roberts Rinehart - more than a mystery writer

I write blog reviews for The Kindle Blog Report, but am expanding into reviewing books on the Kindle as well.

In 1915, at 38 and with three children, Mar Roberts Rinehart left for Europe (alone) to cover World War I for the Post. She toured Belgium and was received by King Albert, taking his first authorized statement regarding the war since its start. She interviewed Winston Churchill and Queen Mary in England, toured hospitals and the French and English lines. Her collected articles were published in Kings, Queens and Pawns, later on in 1915.

More than this book, I advise everyone to read a biography of Rinehart, Had She but Known: A Biography of Mary Roberts Rinehart.

Lest we forget

We often forget how terrible conditions were in WWI. Mary Rinehart's first hand account of her experience going to the front (incredible that they let a woman go that close!) tears one's heart as we recall the sacrifices made by our grand and great-grandparents.

The 20's Roar, with Crime and Romance

Sir Francis Ledsam is a brilliant barrister, whose clientele is mainly of the criminal class. He successfully defends Oliver Hilditch from a charge of murdering his business partner. Shortly after the conclusion of the trial, Hilditch's wife, the beautiful Margaret, tells Ledsam that Hilditch, in fact, is an evil killer. Hilditch invites the lawyer home to dinner where he proceeds to demonstrate how he accomplished the murder. Later that evening, Hilditch is murdered in the same manner, presumably by his wife. End of Chapter One!

This well written novel is a thriller of society. Margaret Hilditch's father is the mysterious Sir Timothy Brast, patron of the SPCA, endower of Hospitals, and apparent criminal mastermind. He and Ledsam match wits and cross swords throughout the book. Post War England is well portrayed, with casual sex and a drug-fueled night life, orgies in country homes, wayward women, and wastrels of all classes.

A recurrent theme from Oppenheim's work during this period was the ennui of the upper class, bored with existence, and always seeking novelty and thrill. In this work, the thrills are provided by boxing matches, and matching wits.

I am already a fan and have read several of his books. This one is definitely my favorite thus far. Richly developed characters and an engaging plot qualify this work as a satisfying read.

His division is responsible for providing data management across product lifecycles, developing and deploying advanced real-time multivariate monitoring and control technologies, supporting process monitoring programs and systems, conducting manufacturing process analysis via advanced data analytical methods, and applying systems theory for process troubleshooting and optimization. He led the development and implementation of Multivariate Data Analysis and Real-time Multivariate Statistical Process Monitoring technology in cGMP for use in manufacturing floor during his tenure at Amgen, resulting in significant process improvements. Dr. Undey has industrial experience with PAT tools currently in use in bio/pharmaceuticals manufacturing and is on the steering committee of Pharmaceutical Process Analytics Roundtable. He holds B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Istanbul University, Turkey, and conducted postdoctoral research in Process Modeling, Monitoring and Control group in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA.

Dr. Duncan Low joined the Process Development Department at Amgen in 2003, where he is currently responsible for Materials Science. He leads cross-functional teams for materials and technology evaluation, technology development, and Process Analytical Technology. He is a member of the ISPE Executive Committee for PAT, is a member of USP’s Committee of Experts, and chairs the ASTM E55.01 subcommittee which develops consensus standards for Manufacturers of Pharmaceutical Products. Prior to joining Amgen, he held VP positions at Millipore and Pharmacia Biotech. He has extensive experience of the tools currently in use for upstream and downstream processing and has worked closely with applications development throughout the industry. He has an M.A. in Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Glasgow.

Prof. Jose Cardoso de Menezes coordinates a Systems Engineering group at the Technical University of Lisbon (IST), Centre for Biological and Chemical Engineering, working in PAT, Chemometrics and Multivariate Statistics for over 10 years. He has a Chemical Engineering degree, M.A. in Catalysis, Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering, and a Post-Doctorate in advanced monitoring of bioprocesses. Currently, he is an Invited Associate Professor of Faculty at Pharmacy of Lisbon University (FPLU) and has recently started his own company to exploit PAT implementations in industry. Also, he founded and coordinated for the past 3 years a Masters Program in Pharmaceutical Engineering, jointly taught by IST and FPLU, which covers PAT and PAT disciplines such as QbD, DOE, NIR and other monitoring, modeling and control techniques. He is a member of ISPE, as well as other organizations, has published extensively, and taught many Ph.D. and M.Sc. students on the above subjects.

Dr. Melvin V. Koch is the executive director of the Center for Process Analysis and Control (CPAC) and Affiliate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. He received a B.A. in Chemistry and Mathematics from St Olaf College, M.S. in biochemistry, and Ph.D. in Organic Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Iowa. Dr. Koch previously worked for The Dow Chemical Company in process research and analytical chemistry, achieving the level of Global Director of Analytical Sciences. Currently, he is active with coordinating developments in the field of process analytical technology (PAT) between industry, government agencies, and academia. Dr. Koch has served on the FDA advisory committee to the Office of Pharmaceutical Sciences and on review committees of several US National Laboratories.

Please note that this book is vol 2 of 4 and not 2 of 6. As the volume of 2 of 4, it contains volumes III and IV.
Many pages of the books are unreadable with very very faint prints. Therefore, one star; absence of plain clarification (vol 2/4 and not 2/6) and faint prints.
Rating for content of the book: 5. I have this book in audio and it is a fantastic book with a clear narrative which reads like a novel as opposed to a history book which it is.
