An interesting first-hand account of the Mutiny and Bligh's seamanship.

I liked this book very much. It was interesting to read a first-hand account of what actually happened regarding the actual Mutiny, especially from the view of the Captain. I was always impressed and amazed how someone could navigate over 3,600 miles of open ocean, which was sparsely charted at the time, without the use of charts. All he possessed was a pocket watch someone happened to have, a book of latitude and longitude tables, and a sextant. He uses his memory of past cruises to set their course and allows you to travel through his mind, what he sees and thinks, how he gauges his men, their state of mind, and mostly their well health. He is basically sentenced to death being cast-off with twenty men, in a boat twenty five feet in length, with about five days worth of provisions, in mostly unknown waters that were surrounded by cannibals. Since this is being told by Captain Bligh himself, you are aware that there may be somewhat of a slant to some of the story, however that was mostly limiting and did not affect the overall story. It's only 78 pages, and it's free. I highly recommend it.

Interesting, but rather dry and boring

My title pretty much sums it up. This is basically a rather dry factual account as told by the Captain who was mutinied against. It was rather interesting to me, but I'm sort of a nerd. Once these guys (Bligh and his remaining crew) are on the boat into which they've been cast, the "Subsequent Voyage" part of the novel gets really really repetitive. Still, it is what it is. If you're looking for fun entertainment, this ain't it. If your interested in hearing Bligh's take on the events however, this is it.

Dry, Repetive, Boring

This truly is a log and therefore reads like one. Ad nauseum references to position readings (latitude & longitude); how cold, wet and miserable they were; and, what and how much was served at EACH meal. Bligh's narrative is somewhat self-serving in that he pats his own back for a job well done and goes out of his way to ingratiate himself with the Admiralty, what with his charts, positions and drawings of various islands.
It becomes apparent that Bligh, in addition to being a tyrannical and unreasonable bastard, was not a man of his word. He accused ALL who stayed behind of being mutineers, knowing full well that was not the case, and going back on his word to protect them from prosecution.
One does wonder, though, what the current status (ownership, etc.) might be of the seemingly endless number of previously uncharted islands they passed by in the middle of nowhere might be today.
