I enjoyed this!

I have been attracted books to the fur trading days and early America since I took The Big Sky by A.B. Guthrie off my dad's bookcase and read it years ago. I also really enjoyed L Ron Hubbard's first full length novel Buckskin Brigades set during this era so when I was recently how Washington Irving was a gifted storyteller I chose this out of his titles though this is non fiction to the best of the authors experience and abilities I believe.

I am glad I read it. The language took a bit of work being written back around 1834 so I had to used my dictionary a bit to get rolling.

The descriptions of the land and travels are truly interesting with the vast buffalo herds, bighorn sheep, elk, antelope, beaver salmon and game in abundance. The interactions with many native american tribes were interesting. There are accounts of stupid acts of cruelty as well as feats of nobility and courage. There is one lovely retelling of a squaw who has done her duties unthanked or unnoticed by her husband that is pretty straight up an injustice that anyone could see is plainly unfair and her case made simply, unlike our current talk show fiascos where people just scream at each other.

This story is a good look by a talented writer of an interesting time and adventure.

I really liked the book. It isn't written like a novel and it isn't written like a diary or history book. It is rather unique. It is also well worth reading.

Brilliant Case Study of Supply Chain and Management Techniques in the 1830s American West

I read this as a business book and a history book, not a book about Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville. Bonnieville was a minor figure in the drama of the west. Was he a spy commissioned by the United States to sent into the fur trade to keep an eye on things? If so, what did we learn that warranted his undertaking? How did it advance the national interest? You won't find out here. But for a lucid explanation of the competing interests involved in the fur trade, this is the most lucid account I have read. Irving never set a foot beyond the Front Range (east of the Rockies) but that was far enough, and he was there early enough, to be able to provide a virtually first-hand account of the fur trade. I find his explanation of the major interests (the American Fur Company, Rocky Mountain Trading Company, Hudson's Bay Company) and the difference in the way they managed their supply chains very clear and easy to follow. Much more so than Bernard DeVoto's "Across the Wide Missouri." I'm not diminishing DeVoto as his book won the Pulitzer. But he was 120 years removed from the action. The real story of Capt. Bonneville (if there is one), as DeVoto puts it, remains to be told.

The Shackles We Share

An exceptional exploration of the human condition, Of Human Bondage explores with deft story telling the bonds that inhibit us and the fragility of our spirits.

Maugham weaves an intricate, beautiful, and disturbing portrayal of the frailty and frivolity of man's pursuits. Passions built on character or reason are so often times dashed for the passions based on romantic ideologies. The ideal love, the ideal work, the ideal desires of an intelligent man seduce us and we chase with unrestrained enthusiasm the beauty, poignancy, and possession of those perfected dreams. Yet, idealism is unattainable, and when man puts every breath, every heartbeat, every effort toward any ideal, it becomes ugly, it becomes nothing less then obsession. Maugham illustrates this point wonderfully, manipulating his poor Phillip Carey to inquire exhaustively on life, purpose, and most strikingly, love. Carey chases what he has come to obsess despite its utter destruction of him. Yet, he goes back toward his destructive pursuits time and again, assuredly placing himself in the shackles of bondage. Put simply: We THINK we know what we want. And our desires imprison us.

Of Human Bondage also expounds on the nature of insecurity and ideal of self as a crippling facet of enslavement. Phillip Carey allows himself to be punished for his perceived shortcomings and he despises the very essence of himself. In this instance Maugham has touched upon a great universal truth of humanity. So very often, we seek out and highlight our imperfections, our nuances and use them as excuses or a sort of crutch that we need, yet, a crutch that manages to cut us each day that we use it. We detest our flaws but come to depend on the pain they cause. We hinder who we are, and who we can be to assuage the pain of our flaws. An altogether common bondage that mankind is incredibly susceptible to.

Conclusively, Maugham has crafted a masterpiece; indeed, Of Human Bondage has come to be regarded as his greatest literary work. The themes explored in this novel resonate, at least in some way, to every reader, and the author proved to be a provocative, and thoughtful guide. Maugham makes it clear that freedom, personal, individual freedom is relative to our desires and the importance we attach to them. Furthermore, as man is willing to inhibit himself in relation to his own flaws, self esteem must be seen as a hindrance to freedom as well. Our misguided passions and our damaging views of self serve as the bondage of our lives. It is of our own making, and Somerset Maugham has composed an exemplary work here of the greatest prose. Undoubtedly, a piece that deserves considerable attention.

Genius

Many of Maugham's books are ordinary, if always beautifully written, but this is a must-read masterpiece. Of all the thousands of books I've read, by authors ranging from awful to sublime, none have spoken to me more than this one. Nor have I ever empathised with a character as much as Phillip Carey, even though I despised him throughout most of the book. Read it.

What a story! What an author! Can't believe I had never read Maughm before, but at 74 years old, have decided to to delve in to the old classics.

The author has the ability to describe feelings, characters, surroundings and color so that you feel you are a part of the story.

It takes you to a time one hundred years ago but the human emotions are the same as now. I hated for it to end!

Like the Hardy boys or Rick Brant stories

First you have to remember that this book is dated. It is meant as an adventure story for young boys of the 1950's. Like the Hardy boys or Rick Brant stories. Tom Swift is an independent clever inventor, who is not against making a profit and sharing with his friends. Unlike some of his contemporaries he does not feel bad when his opponents get their just deserts.

Gunplay and gold in the far north . . . . .

This is the eighth in a series of Tom Swift books that would eventually run to approx. 35 releases. The book is very old, with a copyright date of 1911. I just finished rereading this release for the first time in a number of years. And while I enjoyed it, I would not pick this book as one of my favorites in the series.

There is a close linkage between three of the Tom Swift books: Tom Swift and his Wireless Message, Tom Swift Among the Diamond Makers, and the current volume. The end of each volume prepares for the next. In the final chapter of "Diamond Makers," Tom and his friends meet Abe Abercrombie, a crusty old gold miner. He beseeches Tom to lend the use of Tom's airship so as to return to a remote part of Alaska. There, Abe had struck onto the most rich gold vein in his lifetime of prospecting. But because of fierce indians guarding the gold valley, the only approach to the bonanza is to cross over the savage tribes unseen in an airship and land at the claim. The "Caves of Ice" -- the present volume -- represents Tom keeping his promise to the aged gold miner, and launching an airship expedition to rediscover the rich gold lode.

One unifying thread that links Wireless Message, Diamond Makers, and Caves of Ice is the presence of Mr. Parker, a very entertaining character who is described as "a scientist." He is totally gloomy-- a kind of "sad sack." He sees disaster in every landscape, and prophecies doom to the Swift expedition at every turn. Tom doesn't like Mr. Parker, but tolerates him since Tom's friend Wakefield Damon had been too quick to invite the gloomy scientist along. Mr.Parker is one of several links unifying the three aforementioned Tom Swift adventures. After Caves of Ice, I believe Mr. Parker disappears from the Tom Swift world.

The book is built around a string of episodes. The book begins with Tom's preparations to depart for Alaska in his airship the Red Cloud. We have to remember that in 1911 the Wright Brothers had not yet flown, and a debate was raging as to whether dirigibles or heavier-than-air planes had the brighter future. The Red Cloud is actually a modified dirigible. Tom's arch-enemy Andy Foger, mentioned repeatedly as "the bully," has designed a rival aircraft which is a heavier-than-air triplane. After some sparring and conflict between Tom and Andy Foger, both teams start for Alaska. It is a sort of race to reach the gold first. The first team to access the valley of gold nuggets will stake a claim, and shut out the other group. Naturally, Andy and his cronies play dirty, and stop at nothing to beat Tom, including the stealing of Abe's map to the location and the sabotaging of Tom's airship.

Finally, the two rival teams reach the remote parts of Alaska. There conflicts arise of various sorts, to include warlike indians and murderous herds of attacking musk-oxen. I will not spoil the story by revealing too much about the final "showdown" between the Fogers and Tom.

What's the wrap on this one? Important for closing out the larger story in the three volumes "Wireless Message," "Diamond Makers," and this one. Plenty of action, but rather sloppy plotting since we are really getting a string of episodes linked only by the journey to the gold fields. Another interesting aspect of this volume -- it does NOT key on one of Tom's numerous inventions. In fact, all three volumes of this triad lack any keyed, title invention (e.g., Tom Swift and his Photo Telephone, Tom Swift and his Submarine, etc.).

Hope you try this and other of the original Tom Swift series. They are fun, and so antique they are rather quaint.

Poorly produced machine reprinting

The originals have been squeezed from a 210-page format to half that number of pages by spreading a small typeface across pages with no margins. Although the publisher claims that typographical errors in the original have been corrected, the copy is riddled with ludicrous typos (degree symbols for the letter "o", "&" for the letter "d", "Neil" for "Ned", etc. with an average of 1-1/2 typos per page. Clearly these were scanned by machine and run through a spell checker, untouched by human eye. The illustrations in the originals are omitted. It seemed a service to reprint the original Tom Swift series in an affordable format, but these are cheap, ugly and so carelessly made that they aren't worth the trouble.

She is a lexicographer and ethnographist and lives in New England.

I love this book. I first discovered it in high school. I work in a big box retail store in middle management. I was just moved to manage a new area where morale is very low. My store manager tasked me with one thing... bring happiness and fun to my new department which is struggling with negative attitudes and high turnover due to unease.
I immediately thought of this book. This book is filled with 1400 streams if consciousness that bring a smile to your face. Like the position of your head when you bite into a taco. Or riding a bicycle around an island. Having possession of the remote control. An open bar. Just small thoughts that invoke a smile to your face. We decided to have an associate choose a new though every day and then the entire team is tasked with spreading that happy thought throughout the store. Telling other associates. Sharing it with customers. Showing excitement about it. I am hoping it will take off and infect the store with good energy. So far we are on day three and it is planting some seeds. I am truly hoping a little happy will go a long way.
This book is adorably clever and simple, but does much to invoke cheer. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a little reason to have pep in your step. It is a reminder that the little things in life are what cause the most joy.
