This is a book from the past, but as important today as it was then. I had doubts as to it's relevance to modern times, but they were of no consequence in the end. A book of courage and honesty in the telling of mental illness, it's consequences on both patient and family. It was a free download, but I downloaded because of the subject, and was glad I did.

About the Author
Annie L. Burton (born c. 1858) was an African-American memoirist. She was born into slavery on a plantation near Clayton, Alabama. Her date of death is uncertain. Her life's story is captured in her 1909 autobiography Memories of Childhood's Slavery Days. In her autobiography Burton relates that the end of slavery not only signaled a time for African Americans to start a new life, but also a time to redefine their lives. "Burton's Memories details not only one woman's quest from slavery to physical freedom but also her journey from a proscribed role to the creation of own free identity."

Bland
By The One You Love to Hate!
I'd say this book was a valiant effort due to the author's clean and grammatically correct writing style.
However,this book turned me off from the first chapter. The chapter's title, which indicated the narrative was about moments of a happy childhood yet it really wasn't as it told of slave whippings, no food for the children and working in the fields. I see anything but happiness in those instances.
This book tends to be all over the place and the timing of events seemed off just a little,
Finally, this book fell flat in regards to description and detail. I would have loved a little more realism and vividness in describing the characters features, places of residence and furnishings in this reading.

Little Gem

Interesting look at a young slave girl that was freed at the end of the Civil War while still a child and before anything bad happened to her. The author gave an interesting narrative of slave children and white children playing together while very young.
Her experiences after the Civil War ended, are as interesting as her experiences while it was going on.
I recommend this little gem to anyone interested in that era of American History.

Wonderful Southern Belle Book

Georgia Elliot has lived in her beloved small southern hometown, Ocean Sands, Mississippi all her life, as her momma and family before her. Though it's a bit like living in a fish tank, everybody knows each other's "people" and life's history, Georgia feels safe. Vivian, her mother, lives just across the street from her in the house where Georgia grew up.

Georgia has tried hard to live up to being the epitome of Southern genteel womanhood: she is a former beauty pageant winner, works in a fine gift shop and had a short marriage (well divorce is the norm nowadays) to the man who is now the mayor of Ocean Sands and who is going to marry Georgia's closest friend Callie. But Georgia has a deep dark secret - she's not just a beauty, she's an intelligent woman who has invented a cooking gadget that can save time and effort for harried mothers and housewife's the world over. It's called the Miracle Chef. But as her mother taught her, it's not proper for a woman to be too brainy to have done something so crass as to be an inventor, so in order to keep her mama happy, Georgia needs to keep her invention a secret.

But that becomes a big problem when a popular TV kitchen show receives a letter touting the Miracle Chef and sends its famous and fabulously good-looking host, Daniel Rogers, son of Hollywood legendary stars, to find out more about the product.

Sparks fly when Daniel meets Georgia. Afraid that her secret will be outed, breaking her momma's heart and will to live (though no one is certain why Vivian has such deeply ingrained feelings) Georgia cooks up a plan to keep Daniel out of her kitchen, by entertaining him in the bedroom.

Georgia and her circle of close friends all belong to the Tiara Club, a group made up of former Southern beauty pageant queens, and one Yankee woman who's new to town and in dire need of friends. At the same time, Georgia's oblivious to the fact there are others in town who also have secrets hidden from everyone - or so they think.

In turns wacky and slapstick, or sometimes poignant and heartfelt, and at moments heated with simmering passion, The Tiara club is the Southern literary equivalent to TV's Desperate Housewives!

Though the theme of the story is all about secrets not so well or necessarily kept, the heart of this book is the loving relationships between these ladies and their lifelong respect and affection for their town, their way of life and their families. The Tiara Club lets the outside world in to the southern belle's club, permitting the rest of us to get some understanding of the mindset of the women who would never dream of walking outside without their nails done properly, their bags matching their outfits and their inner lives very much secreted inside their always politely smiling faces.

This one's All About Secrets.

Heroine Georgia is an ex-beauty queen and secret inventor. She and her friends call each other the Tiara Club, as they're all veterans of the beauty contest circuit--all except one.

On the day everything changes, Daniel, the host of a TV cooking show reads a letter from Georgia's friend Callie praising the Miracle Chef and he announces a cook-off to test it. The problem is, Georgia invented the Miracle Chef and the reason why nobody can find another is that Georgia only had two made--one for herself and one for Callie.

When Daniel shows up on her doorstep wanting to speak to the inventor, the fabric of all their lives starts unraveling.

It's funny and poignant, examining family and friendships, and asking the question whether secrets keep people apart or allow them to remain friends. Oh, and there's a nice, steamy romance, too.

My only complaint is that I had a hard time swallowing the mother's rationalization.

A mixed bag with lots of feel good factor

I have to say that it is lovely book with stupid plot.

Georgia's mother - made to believe that being smart and beautiful makes you a target for sexual harassment and transfering the same believes into her daughter through manipulation in oder to curb Georgia's interest in science and engineering. And Georgia allowing her mother to shape her entire life. Hard to believe from both sides.

But then there is a very nice attempt to capture Southern charm and way of life. And steamy lovemaking descriptions that make for good bedtime reading.

All in all, stupid plot, somhow lacking in character development but charming chick flick nonetheless.

A very quick enjoyable read

A short story with a happy ending, HEBREW HEROES proves to be an uplifting yarn meshing the Judaic POV with a stimulating storyline. Free from graphic descriptions of violence, this would make a fine addition to any library for those with young children. It is a story of love, bravery and faith mingled with a sub-plot liking itself to the New testament account of the Prodigal son.

I found this to be an interesting 'TALE' based on facts of Jewish history. The historical events are really what leads up to the 'Festival of Lights' more commonly known a Channukah. The story does culminate in the renewal of the Temple in Jerusalem, but no mention of the miracle of the eight days of light is made.

Best series I have read in years

well written series, about an amazing dragon and his fellow egg-mates and their adventures in the realm of Bonapartes fight to conquer the world. His companion, Lawrence, once a Navy commander, and now an Ariel Captain due to dragons choose their handlers, fights and suffers injury and misadventures right along side Temeraire. I want more adventure stories about him.

Excellent series

Excellent series - my husband and I both enjoyed it very much. I became attached to Captain Will and Temeraire. I understand there is some interest in making a movie. If it is done with the care that was taken with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, it would make a great series of movies. This will make a great Christmas gift for young or old in our family.
