The superb talent of Twain

Because we have all read Twain when we were so young, we forget how talentuous he was. Roughing it is a great way to recognize, as an adult, who Mark Twain was. What a delightful author! Here is how he describes a coyote:
"He is always poor, out of luck and friendless. The meanest creatures despise him, and even the fleas would desert him for a velocipede. He is so spiritless and cowardly that even while his exposed teeth are pretending a threat, the rest of his face is apologizing for it. And he is so homely!-so scrawny, and ribby, and coarse-haired, and pitiful."

Mark Twain and the West

While visiting Lake Tahoe a friend mentioned to me that Mark Twain had visited a particular site at Tahoe and had written about it in this book. I had not read the book, or even heard of it previously. I downloaded it to my Kindle for reading on the flight home. Very good early Twain, and very amusing also. People on the plane were staring at me wondering why I was laughing out loud. If you are interested in Mark Twain, early history of the west, or if you just want a good laugh, this is your book. Highly recommended.

History and great writing combined with humor.

The content is a delight for those who like Mark Twain and his style. I also like his insight and samples of living in America during the 1860s after the Civil War. He is an expert at putting one in his moment of time; describing the food, guns, transportation, mannerisms and folks around him.
The only reason I give this less than 5 stars is for the publisher's decision to carve Roughing It into a thousand parts. My Kindle can handle a
600 page novel and does so every day. As for the publisher, I hope to meet the little man who decided to toss these logs into the creek. I'd grab him by the collar and give him a good shake to see if there was any common sense in his pan. If not, it sure would make me better and well.
