Spotted this book in the back of the choice section. Collins again at his very best. Great character analysis along with keen human insight. Compelling book which should not be overlooked. It is excellent in the sense that when you are finished, you truly miss the lot of them. Found it to be an old-fashioned gem.

For those who like to wallow in a lengthy

Classic Wilkie Collins.
The mystery of a kidnapped infant 16 years previous and a brokenhearted, hard mother. The story of a young man returned back to England from a socialist upbringing in America and his quest to fit into the world. Wilkie crafted a story which demonstrates the distinct relationship between our upbringing and the manner in which we deal with life's struggles.
For those who like to wallow in a lengthy, pleasant ending: you are likely to be disappointed. Though it is pleasant, it is an abrupt ending.

An easy to read drama by a masterful writer
By Israel Drazin
Amazon offers this superb Wilkie Collins book for free.
“The Fallen Leaves,” by Wilkie Collins (1824-1889, a friend and oft-collaborator with Charles Dickens, is another book that readers can acquire for free from sources such as amazon because its copyright has expired. I encourage readers – those who enjoy a good story told by a masterful writer, to purchase this volume and, indeed, all of Wilkie Collin’s novels. It is a good book with an attention-getting story, not as good as his “Moonstone” and “Lady in White,” or even “The Hunted Hotel,” all of which are superb dramas that begin with unusual episodes, but it is still good and an enjoyment to read. It is more of a moral story, but it is a drama. The title “fallen leaves” describes people who toil their entire life to find happiness but gather very little or nothing of it, only disappointment. Such people are friendless, wounded, lost.
The story is about a boy who lives in a “Christian Socialist” community that has unusual laws designed to help people enjoy life and not be “fallen leaves,” One of their focuses is on love and marriage. The leaders of the community reserve to themselves the right of permitting or forbidding a marriage. The leaders also arrange marriages and tells people who had no interested in getting married to do so. They – as many ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities today, who believe that sheluchim work – feel that husbands and wives would be happier if their marriages are managed by competent advisors.
One of their rules is opposition to marriages between a couple where the woman is much older than the man – much like the famed novelist Iris Murdoch who married a man who was 37 years younger than her – although the leaders allowed marriages where the man was much older than the woman.
In this story, there is a young man about age 20 who is somewhat attracted to a strong-willed woman close to age 40, and she wants to marry him. He is very much attached to his community and its Christian socialist views.
