A brilliant light into the intrigues at the court of Louis XIV

Up to reading this I considered Louis xiv a great King. Saint Simon, without intending to, clearly shows the mediocracy and pigheadedness of the King. Best way to sum him up: he is outraged when someone at court suggest that a king is there for his people and not his people for him. The There are lots of descriptions of petty intrigues and rivalries at court, but never boring. Saint Simon is intelligent enough to reflect on his own times.

for the serious student of French history

This is what is called the "desert route" and is extremely long and thorough. It can be difficult to find the complete memoirs in print so the ebook is very valuable. It is extremely long but is complete for those who want to read the entire thing. The chapters are neatly categorized and this is a detailed look at the court of Louis XIV.

A classic American short story

Next to O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi," "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is one of the most widely read American short stories. I still remember a teacher reading it to us in an American Literature class in high school. And like "The Gift of the Magi," there's a twist at the end that turns the story upside down.

The story is set in Alabama during the War Between the States. Peyton Farquhar, a middle-aged planter, was about to be hanged by the Yankees for attempting to sabotage a railroad bridge. Even knowing that he was about to die, Farquhar's mind was focused sharply on every detail around him. To say much more would be a spoiler, but suffice to say that most readers will not see what's coming until the very last sentence of the story.

The story is worth rereading, and if you somehow got through high school without reading it, go for it.

A Very Enjoyable Half Hour

I picked this up as it played a significant part in the analysis of Vertigo (BFI Film Classics), with one theory that the classic Hitchcock film is essentially a recreation of the OWL CREEK plot. I am glad I did so, otherwise I would have missed a wonderful, quick and exciting short story! I am always a bit hesitant about reading books from yesteryear, worried as to how much the language has differed and whether this would distract from my enjoyment. But such concerns were unfounded. This is as easily accessible now as it was when first published, and still just as worthwhile.

An Excellent Guide to Understanding Yeats' Early Poetry

When Robert Frost (A not very likable fellow, when you read his biographies, despite his excellent poetry.) visited Yeats in Ireland, he made a comment to the effect that, "It's no wonder he believes in faeries." He was responding to the beautiful, mystical Irish landscape Yeats grew up in. This book, even though you're (probably) not in Ireland when you read it, will have you responding much as Frost did. The peasantry have so much of their pagan ancestry in their blood that, despite their ostensible Catholicism, their deep belief in "the little people" comes out as strong as ever when questioned about it. Reading these anecdotes, some of them grafted directly onto Yeats' early poetry, gives them a power they would not have had you not read this book and realized how "here and now" faeryland was to the common people at the time. The Celtic belief that death (into Faeryland)is far more desirable than birth is made beautifully apparent in this book. Hence, by the way, the celebratory Irish wake. Hence also this lovely poem
Heardst thou not sweet words among That Heaven-resounding minstrelsy? Heardst thou not that those who die Awake in a world of ecstacy? That love, when limbs are interwoven, And sleep when the night of life is cloven, And thought, to the world's dim boudaries clinging, And music, when one beloved is singing, Is death?
These sorts of things, as well as Yeats' poetry, are worth deep consideration in this present world where medicine is deemed omnipotent...and yet, nevertheless, we all die.

Faerie Folklore of a Shadowy Ireland of Celtic Mysteries !

In Celtic Twilight, originally published in 1902, Yeats recites several accounts of encounters with the faerie folk and with the people of Ireland of the time which gives us insight into Irish folklore, myth and legend.

Yeats associates poetry with religious ideas and sentiment. And, I believe that he saw himself as writing for Ireland, but a shadowy Ireland of Celtic mysteries and legends, not the Ireland of the modern day. By modern day, of course, I relate this to the modern day of Yeats in the late 1890s and early 1900s.

In the introduction to Celtic Twilight Yeats states; "I have therefore written down accurately and candidly much that I have heard and seen, and, except by way of commentary, nothing that I have merely imagined. I have, however, been at no pains to separate my own beliefs from those of the peasantry, but have rather let my men and women, dhouls and faeries, go their way unoffended or defended by any argument of mine."

I got the strong impression from reading Celtic Twilight that Yeats actually believed in the existence of the faeries. Not just as some myth or legend, but as actual beings that exist in this world, though perhaps unseen by the common man. He wrote each story as if it was something that actually happened, having been related to him by the storyteller, or perhaps that which he had seen for himself in some past time, now recalled as he set pen to paper.

There is a depth to Yeats' writing that lies just below the surface, something that's perceived more than seen. The idea that perhaps magic and the faerie folk are alive in the world of today, but unseen, or perhaps only seen from time to time as a fleeting shadow until one knows just where to look.

It is interesting to note that Yeats was heavily involved in occult studies and practices as part of the Madame Helene Blavatsky's,Theosophical Society and later, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and finally in 1912 the Ordo Templi Orientis.

This would have certainly influenced his outlook on life and his belief in, and dare we say ability to see the unseen things of this world.

I too ask myself from time to time; just what unseen things exist in this world. Perhaps Yeats has seen that which other men can only hope for, or that which they turn away from in dread given the course of their spirits.

Yeats also makes a profound observation: "The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pull them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best."

I found Yeats' observation of particular interest, especially when it comes to theological or philosophical thought. If it is those things that we hear and see in life that forms the fabric of our beliefs, then surely we must take care that that which we see and hear forms strong enough threads so that the fabric we weave is not shoddy.

Yeats' works help us build those strong threads in our lives. For, he certainly influenced the world at large with his writings. In 1923 Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, and in 1934 he shared the Gothenburg Prize for Poetry with Rudyard Kipling.

BRAVE NEW WORLD exposes current political techniques

Brave New World lets the reader experience what an ultimate Godless nanny-state entails (e.g. extrapolate Obamacare). In this world one can expect birth to death individual life planning, euthanasia, birth population control, erasing of the "real" past history, limited science progress due to regulatory over-control, a trading of TRUTH/BEAUTY for SECURITY/HAPPINESS, a multitude of sex/drug/entertainment distractions, and a separation of society into various pre-ordered elitists & serfdom classifications. DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR! I am glad I read this book to see how the ONE WORLD government politicians (Obama/Hillary) will use these effective conceptual techniques to achieve their total control.

The logic and conversations are very real. The science is futuristic but quite credible. The structure of the book is actually patterned similar to the Biblical book of Job (which is an ancient play itself). In other words, the characters proceed through their various Acts until near the end a character of total wisdom/control (God/Mustafa) appears in the final crisis to explain why life is what it is whether it is our real world or Huxley's Brave New World. The artistic structure works as an effective narrative communication tool.

On the “rez”… in New Mexico…

Serendipity, and those unlikely threads connecting seemingly random events that inspire our reading habits. Remember the “Occupy Wall Street” movement? A brief flicker of resistance to the concentration of power in the existing social order. Quickly, and generally politely rolled up by those same forces of order. It was Amy Goodman’s NPR’s report, in 2011, on the “library” in Zoccotti Park, Lower Manhattan, and the mention of Brave New World Revisited that led me to re-read that classic from my ‘60’s reading. I found it amazingly prescient, and gave it 5-stars, plus. As for the original, first published in 1932, it was one of the first 20 books I had listed on my “have read” list, commencing in 1962. What pushed me to re-read Aldous Huxley’s original work was reading a reference to how much of the book was set in New Mexico, an enormous open-air reservation for “savages,” a fact that I had completely forgotten from the original read, back when I wasn’t really sure where the state was. Times have changed, as I have voluntarily (I think!) chosen to live in the “reservation.”

“Taos and Tesuque; over Nambe and Picuris and Pojoaque, over Zia and Cochiti, over Laguna and Acoma and Enchanted Mesa, over Zuni and Cibola and Ojo Caliente…” are all New Mexican place names mentioned by Huxley in one sentence; all so “exotic” and unknown to me in 1962, and now they are literally part of my landscape and reference frame. Why was New Mexico chosen, by this scion to a famous English family? Admittedly it is speculative on my part, and I would welcome comments, but Huxley associated with the Bloomsbury literary group and was a friend of D.H. Lawrence. Figure it was the Lawrence connection, whose remains are still vitrified, some 30 miles north of Taos that led Huxley to place a portion of his novel in this “exotic” location. I just finished reading David Robert’s The Pueblo Revolt: The Secret Rebellion That Drove the Spaniards Out of the Southwest which was led by a shaman from the San Juan pueblo, Popé. In Huxley’s novel, Linda, fresh from London, was left behind in New Mexico, would “go native,” and married a Popé.

Huxley’s novel is a dystopia, one of the two classic visions of the future, along with George Orwell’s 1984 that were de rigueur reading in the ‘60’s. Huxley’s vision was control through the “soft glove,” and, in general, seems to have been a truer insight that the brutal control depicted by Orwell. In “Brave New World” the family is obsolete. All children are “hatched,” that is, created in test tubes. Society’s objectives are stated on page 01: “Community, Identity, and Stability.” From birth, and even before, individuals are designated to a particular level in society; it is a rigid caste system. Drugs are the answer! Specifically “soma,” which seems to be modeled on mescal. The opioid addiction depicted in today’s headlines was foreshadowed by Huxley some 85 years ago. It is difficult to believe that Huxley, writing in the depths of the Great Depression, could have foreseen the mindless consumerism of today, and I smiled when reading the scene in which students are trained to have a horror of flowers and the open countryside since they are free, and would distract from the “duty” to consume, and help someone else “make a buck.”

In Huxley’s world, there were only two billion people. Overpopulation was a theme, somewhat, in BNW, but in “Revisited,” the author articulated his position with much more precision:
“Unsolved, that problem will render insoluble all our other problems. Worse, still, it will create conditions in which individual freedom and the social decencies of the democratic way of life will become impossible, almost unthinkable.” We are currently at seven billion, and the topic of overpopulation is largely ignored.

No question, Huxley was a visionary of the future problems of human society. In terms of his novel however, I felt that his characters were too wooden, and the action too contrived, including the ending. The reader, no doubt as intended, will identify with the outlier, Bernard Marx, who, rumor has it, had a bit too much alcohol poured into his test-tube when he was being “hatched.” Overall, I found the very straightforward exposition of society’s problems, including the promotion of politicians as well-marketed commodities, as set forth in “Revisited” to be the far better read. As for the original, 4-stars.

Historic Dystopia

"Brave New World" is Huxley’s warning of future dystopia seen through the ‘spectacles’ of his 1931 perspective of the direction of society. Contemporaneous with Orwell’s “1984”, a somewhat similar scream of horror at an impending future: this must have been a time of low expectations for the political future given the specter of both communism and fascism gripping Europe and emerging elsewhere.

An Allegory in reverse (?) with Shakespeare's “The Tempest” - Huxley’s protagonist John ‘The Savage’ achieves knowledge and civility through reading a contraband copy of Shakespeare’s collected works. Even Huxley’s title is borrowed from Miranda’s line of “the Tempest”: “How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world”. In Shakespeare light prevails in Huxley, only darkness.

Huxley’s story was assessed by a critic of his time, “The fact is that Mr. Huxley does not really care for the story—the idea alone excites him.” The political future worked out better than it was projected by this novel which was warning rather than prediction Its ‘message’ is still clear and serious, though the story now seems dated and, as the quoted critic implies, a bit uneven in scope - it is only 188 pages. Still, the novel’s historic ‘importance’ makes it a must read.

Getting to Know Oneself

This provocative work by the great thinker Schopenhauer is perfect for the self-inquiring mind, and it's free! This is the real reason to purchase the Kindle - to conveniently find and read the great books of mankind for free in perfectly transcribed editions, a feat which this Kindle edition achieves.

Schopenhauer provokes the reader to consider his desires and to deliberate upon what true wisdom about oneself really is. This is a great work, and anyone pursuing a greater understanding of life will feel he is communicating with a friend while reading it. I highly recommended this free Kindle version.

This book is in the public domain, so you can download it legally for free from several sites on the web; you can get this e-book for your Kindle even if Amazon does not offer it (temporary).

Arthur Schopenhauer was a German philosopher who lived from 1788-1860; he was influenced among others by Plato and Immanuel Kant, and in his turn influenced Friedrich Nietzsche, Ludwig wittgenstein, Thomas Mann and others. Schopenhauers work is known for its pessimistic views and beautifully written essays. If you like reading philosophy -or would like to try it- then I can recommend reading some of Schopenhauers essays.

This volume has 118 pages in the printed version. The contents of this volume is:

An obsolete philosophy

Schopenhauer’s book “The Wisdom of Life” is pretentious garbage. Nietzsche’s assessment of Schopenhauer, which seemed altogether extreme, turned out to be correct. Schopenhauer was a nihilist of the most lamentable sort – you read that right: Schopenhauer was a nihilist that was more lamentable than traditional nihilism.
The framework of Schopenhauer’s “The Wisdom of Life” is by far the most idiotic principle that I’ve ever encountered. It can and should only be regarded as a piece that was contemporary to its own time from a buffoon. Critics and even agitators of philosophy would be able to use this as the stereotype for why people believe that philosophy is nonsense.
Schopenhauer’s principle is thus: That we should rescind the idea of commercial wealth because they’re just things and they will vanish eventually: if not by us then by our progeny. Thus, because our wealth will eventually disappear and is thus not the key to true happiness. He argues that other people are also not the key to true happiness because being around other people makes one stupid and he uses a very racist generalization of American blacks to support this point. Apparently, singing and dancing are acts of stupidity according to Schopenhauer and he felt that black people – whom he perceived as an inferior race – epitomized this idea of other people being a waste of time.
It actually becomes worse from there. He goes on to make spurious generalizations of women needing men to be rulers of the household – contemporary to how they were treated during his time period – and then talks about honor. He makes it quite clear that honor is just meant to preserve, even violently preserve, the idea of one’s public perception. And yet, this type of violence is seen as morally good and rational while he – and others of his time – condemn women for being too emotional because women give into gossip. The self-contradiction is for all to see in these modern times. It also shows that chivalry really was nothing more than self-aggrandizing given the veneer of self-respect in accordance with customs at that time. Dueling for “honor”
I haven’t been able to finish it because the book was so terrible. I got about half-way through it before I had to put it down so feel free to give me any criticisms on this one. I just couldn’t endure the beginning half of the philosophical book.

British Comedy in the Grand Manner

We don't usually think of RLS as a comic writer, but a story-teller ofswashbuckling romances like Kidnapped and Treasure Island. ButThe Wrong Box is comedy in the grand manner: eccentric characters,a wonderfully convoluted plot, settings that range from railway trainwrecks through moldering houseboats, barrels, boxes, and a grand pianothat have bodies in them (actually, the same body), plus a charming romance. It also contains some of Stevenson's finest descriptive writing -- vivid,dramatic, and funny. Miss Haseltine's description of how she will firethe revolver she bought as self-protection is worth the price of the book.Who can forget a novel in which the young solictor Gideon Forsyth is trying to write an opera in the key of seven sharps called "Orange Pekoe-- Orange Pekoe" while hiding on a houseboat?But no more spoilers, if that was a spoiler. If you read or saw "ColdComfort Farm" by Stella Gibbons -- or even if not -- you'll love "The Wrong Box."Very highly recommended.

Peter Sellers meets Weekend at Bernies......kinda.

My review title sums up the overall flavor of the book, that being a "black comedy," but the humor is the result of Stevenson's uncanny ability to weave ever changing plot twists into the overall story itself without ever losing a sense of continuity.
Joseph Finsbury is a character whose heart may be in the right place but his head never is. Constantly preoccupied with trivial intellectual pursuits, he allows his leather business to go heavily into debt to the brink of ruin. Having raised his two nephews, John and Morris, since the death of their father, the news of the loss of their fortune to Joseph Finsbury's malfeasance lays the ground work for all that is to come.
Morris, who is shrewd and extremely self-centered, is given the ailing leather business as consolation. But Morris counts on Joseph winning the tontine to make him whole. A tontine is a scheme where participants pay an equal amount of money into a kitty and the last one living gets it all.
The three are involved in a train wreck and the assumed body of Joseph Fisbury is found by Morris and John who hatch a plan to first hide the body and then ship it back to their home in Bloomsbury, London, where they will pretend Joseph is still alive; which he needs to be to keep their claim to the tontine intact. It is during shipment that its' destination is changed as a sort of practical joke and mayhem ensues shortly thereafter.
The bulk of the story essentially has people coming home and finding a dead man in their house whom they've never seen before, dead or alive, and who definitely wasn't there when they left. The problem then is obvious; What to do with the body? It is here that Stevenson is ulra-creative with the solutions these poor unfortunate souls come up with long before Bernie ever had two losers over for the weekend.
I found myself laughing several times throughout the book, which is only about 150 pages of text, and always eager to pick it up again to see where poor "Joseph" would end up next and who would get him. This is one of Stevenson's less familiar works but also one of his best. Buy it, read it, tell a friend. You'll be glad you did and so will they.

If you have some heart problems, it is better to avoid this book. You might have the same reactions that Rudyard Kipling had on this reading: laugh and fast heart-beating.
Practically it is impossible to touch this subject without been absorbed through the mirror as Alice and in the same time to be happy to be different. Morris Finsbury, the "great Vance", uncle Joseph, Miss Hazeltine, Gideon, the uncle "Wooden Spoon", William Dent, Bloomsbury, Victoria Station, are surely coincidental with your world, parents, neighbors, your TV characters and other people you know. Never a virtual Country (this 18th Century England) was so similar to the Country in which you are leaving now.
But this vivid Victorian picture is penetrating in your mind as ever before.
The other problem you will encounter is that of ever putting this very addicting book down. You will read and read it again to search the hidden treasure left in this Island on which only few elected spirits are claimed to wreck being happy of doing it.

19th century poetry with 21st century sensibility

Back in high school I struggled through Red Badge of Courage. Likewise, Crane's novel about a young prostitute, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, bored me in college. But along the way I discovered that Crane wrote poetry as well. His poetry is not the sentimental and genteel poetry often associated with the 19th century. His aggresive free-verse is more an agonized scream and a punch in the gut. Crane delights in calling out hypocrisy and exposing it to the light of day.

Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce and H.L. Menken were the "paragons of pessimism" during their days. To that group add the voice of Stephen Crane who was their equal in expressing the cynicism of the age; but Crane's cynicism often came wrapped around a seed of hope for mankind.

Both this volume and The Black Riders and Other Lines are highly recommended.

One of the best books of American poetry ever

I can't read a line from this book without being struck by how relevant Crane's poetry remains to this day. Personally, I put it on the top of the heap for the past 150 years; It may not be greater (or less great) than Stevens, Eliot, Frost, Dickey, etc., but it does more for the reader than any of these. Read these poems and find what Emily Dickinson meant when she said she knows it's poetry if it feels like the top of head is taken off, or something like that.

Moving, Heartfelt, Cynical

These poems are moving, heartfelt, and rather cynical. Stephen Crane was an American poet who wrote in the late 1800's. He's pretty remarkable for having written some free verse in that era of meter and rhyme.

Here is how the poem from which the title is derived ends:

"Mother whose heart hung humble as a button
On the bright splendid shroud of your son,
Do not weep.
War is kind!"

Good history from the period. But definite slant.

From the files of Sherlock Holmes to the history of the transvall..... I didn't know Doyle had done this piece. Nor did I realize he made multiple revisions as more "facts" were revealed to him.

A great read in the beginning, and I want to stay away from any political stance for one party or another, but after a short period, it becomes overly clear that Doyle is writing as an Englishman first, and an historian second.

The creator of Sherlock Holmes was definitely for the Empire first, England second, and history third. That being said, it is on the whole a good read although it drags at times. The writing style captures a certain late Victorian imperial mindset, not unlike the Sherlock Holmes novels, that is itself fascinating and historically valuable. I recommend the "Great Anglo Boer War" by Byron Farwell, which is both more readable and accurate than Doyle's lengthy work.

The Great Boer War - South Africa

Very interesting insight into events in South Africa as recorded by the famous Author: Arthur Conan Doyle. However, the work contains a particularly British view point. I was none the less fascinated to read of the great horsemanship skills of the Boers and how they could carry out very effective mounted raids on the enemy, while firing with deathly accuracy from the mounted position. This book, among other points of view, makes a useful contribution to ones understanding of the time and events which led to the two Boer Wars.

It was a Vexed Question, in 1900, whether George Ade would Surpass Himself in his second book of Fables in Slang, or if he was even Up to the Job. The first Couple of Stories were Nothing Special, and the One about the Farmer who Worked his Helpmate into the Ground was Downright Grim.

Ade (No Dummy) must have figured a Dose of Politics was Just the Ticket, and so he wrote about That Time the Southern Colonel met the President of the Head Waiters' Union:

One morning the Colonel went into the Dining Room, and after he had seated himself he called Mr. Winfield to him and said he wanted some Hot Biscuit. At the same time he addressed Mr. Winfield as a Black Hound. Mr. Winfield did not know that this was a Term of Endearment in Apahatchie County, so he picked up a Silver Fruit Dish and bounced it against the Colonel's Head. The Colonel arose and pulled his Persuader, expecting to make it a Case of Justifiable Homicide, but two Waiters named George and Grant grabbed him and backed him up against the Wall.

It was evident, that from Here on Out, Ade had got a Firm Handle on Things, and apart from one Slightly Disturbing tale about a Practical Joker who gets Strung Up for Salting a Mine, these Short but Sweet (but never Sappy) Fables would be the Real Deal.

Clara's work about this time was ever so Glossy. She began by asking the Treasurer of the Shoe Factory to come with her to the Refrigerator to get out some more Imported Ginger Ale. All the men Volunteered to help, and two or three wanted to Tag along, but Clara drove them back. They were gone a Long Time, because the Treasurer had to draw all the Corks, and they Fussed around together in the Pantry fixing up a Lunch for the Boys. Clara told him how Strong and Handy he was, until he felt an increase in his Chest Measurement.
