Thoroughly addictive and thought provoking social commentary

While it can seem bloated and repetitive at times, Trollope has a masterful way of illustrating the vagaries of all types of social rank and the weaknesses of human spirit.

I'm particularly amazed at how well Trollope's story illustrates the political struggles over women's rights which raged during the 19th century. In the central struggle between the jealous Louis Trevelyan and his prideful but loyal wife Emily, He Knew He Was Right explores male authority and women's rights within marriage--core issues in arguments over married women's property. As documented by Wendy Jones, the novel was written during the height of the debate in British parliament about these issues. Jones makes explicit the nature of Trollope's contribution to this debate by showing how He Knew He Was Right intersects with the broader cultural discourse of contract, which informs Victorian Feminist arguments, and which was central to an ideal of married love.

Trollope also has a wonderfully entertaining way of exploring the pitfalls of both conforming to or rebelling against social conformity and authority. Human psychology is illuminated as much as social authority. Each way of being is shown to have its weaknesses. No one side of an argument or single character is ever all right or all wrong (save, perhaps Camilla French). At some point each inhabitant of Trollope's finely drawn universe appears intractable to his or her detriment, as if *he knew he was right*. Pride and ego are relentlessly laid bare. Sticking steadfastly to that position is almost universally the most problematic position. I found He Knew He Was Right thoroughly addictive and thought provoking.

Always a Trollope fan (about 42 books, Barster Towers a favorite), there is no better ride for me then dipping into his farces and satire. Trollope was paid by the word, and serialized. Publishers wanted lots of words. Yes, he could be edited and reduced. The reply to that is a shocking, "WHERE?" His fans do not want him to sound like the usual schlock out there.

Though inflated in size, the books employ a traditional layout of illustrated novels with thoughtful, sparing placement of pictures and uninterrupted flow of the original texts. Gentle, often humorous interpretations of characters and events appear in one full-page scene in most chapters; occasional small views and set pieces open and conclude chapters. With paintings that beautifully complement the enduring stories, these might be welcome new editions. Not visually lavish by today's standards, but still showy, they will serve as gift items or for reading aloud in some situations. The Correct Order of all 14 Books in the series !!

I know you're all wondering, "how does she know the correct order?" Is she over 100yrs old? Well, I know because my grandmother, gone for 34 yrs now, had each and every book bought hot of the presses. Inside each book, except the first, are the previous books in order. Also a couple of the names have changed a bit since they were first written but I have the Books of Wonder titles in this list.
So, here they are in correct order.

A true delight for Oz fans!

This beautiful, oversize, lavishly illustrated Centennial Edition of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a cornucopia of enjoyment for Oz fans. Edited by Oz expert Michael Patrick Hearn, it's annotated in a manner similar to Martin Gardner's "Annotated Alice" (Gardner contributes a preface outlining the history of the "The Annotated Wizard of Oz").
There's a hundred-page introduction, with lots of photos and color illustrations, covering Baum's life, his family, his non-Oz books, and the history of the Oz phenomenon (books, plays, musicals, movies, other Oz authors, and much more).
The story itself is reproduced from the 1900 edition. W.W. Denslow's original illustrations, including all 24 color plates, are here too. Hearn's notes are entertaining, informative and very extensive. For example, there are three double-columned pages dealing with Baum's brief one-page introduction alone!
Anyone who loves the Oz books will find countless hours of pleasure in this delightful book. It's well worth the price!

The ORIGINAL Wizard of Oz is Published

I don't own THIS particular Edition, but I will soon, and as soon as I saw it in Dymmocks, I looked through it and thought "I've really gotta get this book!" And this is why . . . .
I'm sure that there are those of you who have the annotated Wizard of Oz and/or the Dover editions of the Wonderful/Wizard of Oz (Dover has made different copies in publishing it in different ways). the Annotated Wizard of Oz may have the pictures in full-colour, but the colour plates are in 1 whole place, in the middle of the book, and that goes the same for the recent Dover Edition of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (where Dorothy is wearing a pink dress, talking to her friends, all wearing the Green glasses). The other Dover editions of this story have the pictures in black-and-white (sometimes all, other times, a few of them) with the colour-plates in their own chapter but in black-and-white.
THIS EDITION - the 100th Anniversary Edition - is one everybody should have. It has all the pictures in colour-and-black lined with the FULL-COLOUR-Plates in their OWN PROPER CHAPTER place, e.g. "She caught Toto by the ear" in THE CYCLONE, "I am the Witch of the North" in THE COUNCIL WITH THE MUNCHKINS, etc. It even has the picture of Dorothy and Toto back in Kansas on the very final page on the book in the backboard. And when you pull off this picture-cover (the one that you see now), the actual cardboard-leather-bound cover has the EXACT SAME ORIGINAL Cover Angela Lansbury shows in "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The Making of a Movie Classic", where the Cowardly Lion is wearing the Green glasses on the Front cover, Toto is on the spine and the back has the faces of Dorothy, the Scarecrow and (Nick chopper) the Tin Woodman in circles.
An Important Note on this story is that it Is Imaginative But it Is Not DARK as some people say. It is not scary nor is it supposed to be attempted that way in any new adaptation, nor should it always be made similar to MGM with constant references or musical scenes. This is an AMERICAN 1900 Story, it is not English/British like J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter, Tolkien's Hobbit/LofR or C. S. Lewis' Narnia - it is its own place!! Oz is a place where animals can talk, there are strange animals who are not mythical and never appeared in any other legends, wicked people are defeated by simple acts, by it accidentally-non-magical or magical, everybody is friends and the ordinary items of our world can have strong but simple magic.
Now matter how much the MGM Musical is loved, reading this book is worth it, because it explains how many of the events in Oz came to be when Dorothy arrived: how did the Tin Woodman come to be? How did and why do the Winged Monkeys obey the Wicked Witch of the West? What became of the Winkies after the WWWitch's death? Did Lion become the King of Beasts again? Naturally the musical is different from the book, but despite the change of the Kansas beginning/ending, the story is basically the same. this book only offers MORE than the movie did.

About the Author
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He is noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), called "the Great American Novel", and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which would later provide the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. He apprenticed with a printer. He also worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to his older brother Orion's newspaper. After toiling as a printer in various cities, he became a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River, before heading west to join Orion. He was a failure at gold mining, so he next turned to journalism. While a reporter, he wrote a humorous story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, which proved to be very popular and brought him nationwide attention. His travelogues were also well-received. Twain had found his calling. He achieved great success as a writer and public speaker. His wit and satire earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. However, he lacked financial acumen. Though he made a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he squandered it on various ventures, in particular the Paige Compositor, and was forced to declare bankruptcy. With the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers, however, he eventually overcame his financial troubles. Twain worked hard to ensure that all of his creditors were paid in full, even though his bankruptcy had relieved him of the legal responsibility. Born during a visit by Halley's Comet, he died on its return. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature".

A Small Book in Length but Large in Enjoyment

In the primary essay in this small book, with more misdirection than modesty, Mark Twain starts by saying he does not claim to know how a story should be told but knows a good one when he hears one. Now he's talking about "humorous" stories, the kind Americans can tell, and not the comic or witty stories that Englishmen and Frenchmen tell. The mark of a good humorous story is in the art of its telling and not in the subject matter, as are those told by foreign storytellers. The beauty of this essay is that after aquainting the reader with the technique of telling a good American humorous story, he presents a sample that proves his opening disclaimer false, by telling such a story to perfection, and by giving the reader the illusion of hearing it told aloud on a stage, as he was noted for. Alas, it is a story told in dialect that probably cannot be read by some today for its humor, but I think there is a spirit in it that transcends today's objections and believe that all Americans can revel in the good humor of the mentality behind this story.

The other essays in this book are also good examples of the work of 19th century America's greatest storyteller and wit.

A Must Read

The book is only a few pages long. At first glance I'll admit, I felt chinced. Then, I began to read and understand why his work is considered American classic. (Knowing what I know now, I would've paid twice as much for this book). Twain's astounding wit comes through in this book as concentrated power with an organic and soulful feel. This book will take you on an albeit short, but magical journey through the culture of americana.

Another from the talented Benson family

While E.F. Benson (author of the Lucia novels) is the best-known of the family, his brother Robert Hugh was equally prolific. R.H. Benson was, like the protagonist of this novel, a convert to Catholicism and most of his writings are either theological works or strongly shaped by his religious beliefs.

Laurie, the young hero from a "good family," became engaged to Amy, a good-hearted but "common" woman, the daughter of the local grocer. She dies young and he finds himself caught up in the current craze of Spiritualism. On the surface of it, the book is a warning about the perils to the body and soul of Spiritualism, but it also tacitly parallels the dangers of Spiritualism with the dangers of mingling too closely with the lower classes. The easy contempt of the two female heroines for Amy may indeed be rather difficult for modern audiences to swallow.

R.H. Benson does not have the same easy facility of description or characterization that his brother had, nor does he have the writing power to convey drama and horror. Perhaps these comparisons are unfair, but Colin II or The Luck of the Vails, by E.F. Benson, are so much stronger at setting up confrontations with evil that the contrast makes the confrontations here seem much less striking.

As a believing and practicing Catholic and a fan of horror novels (and movies), I found Benson's "The Necromancers" the perfect read. The book will strengthen your faith, thoroughly entertain, and freighten. This book should be read far and wide.

This is a book that documents. dissects, examines, and judges the role of evil in this world. Benson reminds us that every coin has two sides and is we believe in in the "New Age," witchcraft, Satanism or the myriad of occult fashions, then by necessity we must believe in God.

OK, I lost you. Yes, I know Benson was a priest first an Anglican and then a RC priest but this book does more than terrify, which it does very well, it allows the reader to experience the supernatural forces and their reasons for acting in the material world. This book is fine literature which reflects the rational and emotional elements of the characters.

So, even if you think that all the above-mentioned subjects are bunk, the characterization of this era will reward you in at least at historical or sociological contemporary perspective. Should you be discovered reading it. you will not be embarrassed nor unrewarded.

A good Trollope

I always enjoy Trollope, and this one offers an outsider's view (the American Senator, Mr Gotobed) of some of the absurdities of Victorian England - many of which still exist! It also offers the excitement of the chase - both in the hunting scenes and in Arabella Trefoil's attempts to capture a husband - not a slow moment!

What a wonderful new world--my Kindle and all the free great books I can find the time to read. Among them, Anthony Trollope. Always satisfying, better than Dickens (though not so good as Austen--no one is). This one features a hilarious American come to lecture the English on their wicked ways. Great fun, and you can always skip the endless hunt scenes.

This is a heartwarming story of an admirable young man's commitment to his and his father's shared ideals-the family's redwood timberland and his mother's memory-and the wonderful relationship he has with his father. A star-crossed romance, adventure, and the struggle against a ruthless business rival (the guardian of his sweetheart) add excitement. Reminiscent of stories by Willa Cather and John Steinbeck.

Written in in 1918, this is the story of one man's struggle to hold onto his inheritance--the 'valley of the giants' (the redwoods), and win the affection of the girl he loves, while remaining true to his ideals. I enjoyed this book because of its references to, and descriptions of, the awe-inspiring California redwoods.

About the Author
Ren? Descartes, known as the Father of Modern Philosophy and inventor of Cartesian coordinates, was a seventeenth century French philosopher, mathematician, and writer. Descartes made significant contributions to the fields of philosophy and mathematics, and was a proponent of rationalism, believing strongly in fact and deductive reasoning. Working in both French and Latin, he wrote many mathematical and philosophical works including The World, Discourse on a Method, Meditations on First Philosophy, and Passions of the Soul. He is perhaps best known for originating the statement I think, therefore I am.

Autobiography and Philosophy

In Discourse on Method (DOM), Descartes wrote a history of his own philosophical pilgrimage and a program for his philosophical and scientific system. The DOM serves as a programmatic summary of what Descartes considered a revolutionary new method of knowledge; it is a kind of philosophical confession of faith which serves as an apology.

It is important to remember that DOM was the preface to three works of science--the Geometry, the Dioptrics, and the Meteorics--which followed it in the original text published in 1637. These served as proof of the success of the method.

Descartes presents himself as an earnest and humble seeker of truth. He delights in all manner of learning, but is unsatisfied with its uncertain status. Though well-schooled and well-traveled as a young man, his heart finds no rest in authority and tradition. He finds clarity and certainty in mathematics but sees little of philosophical value built upon its foundations. So he is discontent.

It is important for Descartes to convince the reader that he failed to find certainty in the conventional places. This helps to convince the reader that a new and revolution method is needed. Descartes now resolves to make himself alone the object of study.

In Germany, Descartes repairs to a secluded room heated by a stove to occupy his attention with his own thoughts. Here he begins to discover his method.

When Descartes begins to philosophize he discovers four "precepts of logic" which he resolves never to violate: (1) to believe nothing except what is clear and distinct, (2) to divide up problems into appropriate parts, (3) to proceed from the simple to the complex, and (4) to make sure nothing is left out. This method can, Descartes thinks, deliver a kind of mathematical certitude. Yet he deems himself too young and inexperienced to commence the project. He waits until he is more mature.

Descartes then sets out to doubt all that can be doubted (while keeping religion provisionally intact), not in order to be a skeptic but to find indubitable certainty. He then gives a brief treatment of issues more thoroughly addressed in (also autobiographical) The Meditations (published later). Everything can be doubted except himself as a doubter: "I think, therefore I am" becomes the indubitable and foundational principle of certitude upon which the structure of knowledge and science can be safely built.

He goes on to report his conclusions concerning the existence of God, the distinction of mind and body and the immortality of the soul. These conclusions are reached by rebuilding philosophy from himself as an autonomous knower. Thus, according to Hirom Caton, is "the origin of [modern] subjectivity" and the animus of his autobiographical stance. (I owe several of the following observations to Caton's book, The Origins of Subjectivity.)

To this point, Descartes uses philosophical autobiography quite skillfully. The telling of a story draws in readers who might not be normally attracted to philosophy. He conveys a sense of intellectual adventure and he personalizes the positions as his positions, grounded on his perspective, not merely as abstract speculations of no one in particular.

The autobiographical form is not incidental to the philosophy proposed. Descartes' autobiographical form is intrinsically connected to his philosophical program. Because of his distrust of tradition, he must, as it were, begin philosophy all over again from himself as an autonomous being. The starting point for Descartes' positive philosophy is not an abstract proposition but an existential statement, "I think, therefore, I am." By making himself the central object of study, he demonstrates that philosophy and autobiography are intimately and necessarily related. A statement of his philosophy requires a history of the study of himself.

Descartes used autobiography to avoid an overtly didactic or dogmatic manner by saying that the book is merely a record of how he himself conducts his reason. Using the autobiographic form, Descartes can avoid the authoritarianism of the schools while still making broad sweeping claims as to the veracity and utility of his method. He believes his method is sound, but he asks his readers to test what he says against their own reason. He thus decided to write the work in the "vulgar" French instead of the traditional--and scholastic--Latin.

The rest of DOM consists of portions of an unpublished work on physical science and Descartes' comments on why he has not published it. In these later sections Descartes launches into a kind of campaign speech for his own greatness and the indispensability of his scientific method.

He laments that he could not publish his work--The World--because of the prevailing authority's disagreements with his conclusions. Descartes fears that publication would threaten the equanimity he needs to be a successful seeker of truth; but his dedication to human betterment demands that he arrange for its posthumous publication.

Descartes is particularly shrewd at this point. He seems to be enlisting public support for the publication of a work he is afraid to publish. He tantalizes the reader by saying that his findings have tremendous practical value for the alleviation of human suffering and betterment of human health. Descartes ends the DOM with a restatement of his mission as a seeker of truth and benefactor of humanity.

All in all, Descartes uses philosophical autobiography quite successfully. The form fits the philosophy throughout most of the DOM in that Descartes is challenging the inherited wisdom of the schools by urging a personal discovery of truth through a radical method of rethinking philosophy with self-awareness at the center. His self-awareness is the foundation of his method.

Descartes presents himself as a kind of philosophical hero of almost mythical dimensions who is on a quest for the holy Grail of certainty. He claims to have captured the Grail which blesses him with the ability to envision an entirely new philosophy and science of nature. He gives the Geometry, the Dioptrics, and the Meteorics (which follow the DOM) as positive evidence of the fruitfulness of his method. They are, he claims, harbingers of even greater discoveries.

Nevertheless, Descartes sustained self-promotion at the end of the work seems intrusive at times and does little actual philosophical work. He is fighting for the chance to be heard by showing us his good intentions and intellectual genius. But the philosophical hero succumbs to hubris and the semblance of humility is betrayed by a kind of egotism which spills over the bounds of propriety and actually gets in the way of concrete philosophizing.

At first I wasn't going to read this one, but when I started to read Meditations on First Philosophy Descartes referred to this several times, so I decided to quickly read it. Instead of doing the smart thing and getting a better translation, I found and read this public domain one. In hind sight after reading the superior Hackett version translated by Cress, it would have been better to just wait for that one (or pay the small price).

As for the Discourse, it's pretty interesting, Descartes decides to throw way everything he's learned and approach everything as geometric proofs where he builds on top of what he can completely infer. At first he rejects all senses and perceptions because they could be an illusion, the only thing he knows is, "I think therefore I am" (or if you read the Cottingham version, 'I am thinking therefore I exist'). From this he bases everything. He later goes to present his own modified version of the ontological argument, basically he thinks of something more perfect than himself, since he knows there is something more perfect then this, then eventually the most perfect thing is God. I'm sure many theists will agree with him that perhaps God is the only other thing they know is true, but I'm not sure how the thought of a most perfect being is more apparent than everything he experiences around him. I realize that his could be in illusion, but the thought of a most perfect being is more concrete? If someone doesn't perceive of this most perfect being instead assumes that everything is partially flawed does god cease to exist?

The First Part of M Ts Visit to Hawaii

Part seven gives an interesting first person look at this period of the cultures and attitudes of a Hawaii of his era. It also includes insight into what the Island's Ecology, and Geology looked like in those days. His commentaries reflect some racial attitudes that would be frowned at in this day and age but he is still on the liberal edge for his era.

I enjoyed all seven parts of Roughing It but because I live in Hawaii and am familiar with its history, as told by others, I really enjoyed Mark Twain's perspective from the mid-19th century. You will too.

Tom Swift and the Big Bang

_Tom Swift and His Big Tunnel_ (1916) by "Victor Appleton" is the nineteenth edisonade in the long running series authored by Howard R. Garis (of _Uncle Wiggly_ fame). Tom's new invention isn't really anything very imaginative or colorful-- just a powerful explosive for blasting a wall of super hard minerals in a mine. But it sets the stage for a rather enjoyable jungle adventure in Peru.

As usual, Mr. Swift warns Tom that his invention will fail and that he had better not continue his project. And there are a series of individuals problems which are all neatly solved by Tom in the Andes mountains through a series of incredible coincidences. Not very realistic, mind you. But rather fun to read about. There is a romantic misunderstanding that is eventually straightened out. And there are some villains who get their just desserts (though there are others who do not). This is certainly nothing classic, but it is passable fun. It is one of the more readable of the old Tom Swift adventures today.

Another Archeological Find!

AH! Coincidence! Where would Tom and his pals be without it? Without giving away too much, what are the odds that one would find exactly what one was looking for while randomly blowing a tunnel through a mountain? In any case, after the usual initial plundering (supposedly for a museum) an attepmt is made to try and preserve a great archeological find; a rarity in the days this story takes place.
Either ay, another thorouhgly good read...
